I am a photographer. My Mac Tower and Macbook Pros display my external hard drives on the desktop. That makes workflow so much easier. I just purchased an I-Mac and have to access the external HDs through the menu. how I can display the icons for the external HDs on my desktop?Â
View 4 RepliesI have three external harddrives all of which are connected through different ports, all show up in finder, all show up in disk utility, but none of them will show up on my desktop. I looked at a few other posts similar to mine but the answers given to other problems have not worked. There is no way all three of my cords are causing a connection problem and I have repaired and verifyd all the drives and still nothing.

I moved mail from an exchange server to my computer to get around using to much space at work. I then dragged that folder to my desktop which created a .mbox file. When I try to move the .mbox file from my desktop to an external hard drive it wont move. a grey circle with an exclamation point appears. I tried doing it with Entourage close as well and got the same issue. Does anyone know the proper way for me to move the .mbox file from the desktop to the external hard drive?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a 24" iMac and it was running fine the other week and now I get this annoying error=36 whenever I try to transfer large files from desktop to my external drives. It goes about 1/4 way with the transfers then stops with the error=36 message. I've tried to reset the pram but it won't let me. It just keeps on restarting to the same gray screen with the single short beep tone over and over until I let go of the option, command, P & R buttons and restarts normally but does not reset the pram.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was done doing various tasks on the iMac and when I decided to plug in the external hard drive for a Time Machine backup, the drive spun, but was never shown on the desktop.I also tried another external drive and had the same thing happen.
After rebooting (hey, this sounds like Windows!), the drive again showed up on the desktop and Time Machine worked fine.Is an external hard drive not showing up on the desktop a somewhat common issue?
I have a fairly new iMac that I upgraded to Snow Leopard a few months ago. It seemed to me that prior to that my external HD worked fine with Time Machine. Since then it is recognized for a short period of time when I connect it, then it disappears. I replaced it with a WD My Book. It worked perfectly for a month and now it has shut down. Has anybody had run into this before? I can't believe that every hard drive fails within a month in the same mysterious way!

Is it possible to have an external HDD connected to an iMac or Mac Mini on a regular basis? I have a Power Mac G4, and it's always had issues with going into sleep mode when there is any external storage connected via the USB 2.0 ports (and I've put in replacement ports to try and remedy this, to no avail). The main problem is that once the system wakes up, it thinks you've improperly removed the device. Apple told me, way back, that this was normal and to just eject all external storage before going into sleep mode. Which is a pain, but looking at a new desktop Mac I would like to just get the tiny, base HDD and use a beefy external for all my media - unless this is still an acceptable norm with new macs.

i have tried going to the disk utilities and remounting my external drives and checked for an option in system prefs, but my external drives (both flash drive and hard drive) just won't show up on my desktop. My computer isn't even a week old!

For some reason, my desktop icons are stacked on my hard drive. I am able to drag the items to the trash or another folder but I cannot move them to another location on the desktop. I did check the "get info" on the desktop and the "locked" option is not checked. Any file that I download or save immediately appears in the top right corner of the desktop on top of the HD icon. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a 1.5tb external hdd. My buddy loaded it up with tons of movies for me. Worked great for about one week. I hate my desktop being cluttered with icons so I decided to erase the icon on my desktop. Now I can't find my hard drive no matter what I do. Finder: it's not there. Disk utility: it's not there. It is plugged into the wall and thus a blue light emitting from the front and it is clearly plugged into the USB on the back of my Mac mini. I just can't find it anymore no matter what I do.

I have the new one in an external case with USB 2.0 right now. Is there some way I can transfer the entire contents of the old hard drive on to the new one and then swap out the old drive with the new drive and not miss a beat?

But they are drives (shared apparently, blue with the people on the drive as the logo) and if I click get info it says under server: file//localhost/home. The "net" drive appears as file//localhost/net. Sharing and permissions says - you can only read. I definitely don't run any servers, just browsing for the most part. I haven't noticed this drive until today.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have a 2TB WD mirror edition that is setup in RAID 1 so it will mirror all my data. Now I also have a bunch of other drives laying around which I also feel the need to back up and currently I am doing this by doing a whole bunch of dragging and dropping and copying and pasting etc etc etc and this is making me very tired. I know that a setup is possible in disk utility but I am not at all sure about how to configure it so I wont lose any of my data.
Some details about my setup:

Harddrives: two 1TB WD MyBooks, and two 500gig WD Mybooks --> these pairs need to mirror each other and make my life less of a hassle.
I often use external hard drives to back up my work. Recently I purchased a 1TB Lacie drive. I took a week to build a lovely new file structure for my work. At the end of this week, I began deleting the old files on other hard drives so as to transfer my new neatly structured work back on. In the midst of this, the brand new hard drive crashed, illiciting only the clicking sound of death.
That hard drive, some of my work (a very small amount but still) and a week's worth of sweat and blood was gone in an instant. The person I took it to to look at it mentioned a power surge as being a possible cause for the crash. Anyway, I returned the lacie and bought a 1T Western Digital Mybook (silver). I then began dumping the old back ups onto this.
A week in and this one is crashed too. No clicking sound of death. It calmly sits on my desk with it's unceasing unblinking blue light and refuses to show up in utilities no matter what I do. So I assume it's a goner also. I'll return it also of course. Is something causing these drives to fail...that exists in my walls? Are there power surges causing my drives to die...? OR is it simply a case of bad luck with my choices of new drives?
Recently have not been able to drag widows, folders, or files on my desktop. Nor have I been able to draw boxes (text or picture) in PhotoShop or InDesign. If, for instance, you want to move a window in FireFox to accomodate another window, when you go to grab the bar at the top of the page to drag it it won't move; sometimes the result will pop the window to the Dock. Also trying to select text is very erratic; you can't always select the text you need. You can pretty well set the cursor anywhere, but that's about it. The scroll arrows work, but not the scroll bar if you grab it. At first I thought it was the Apple optical mouse, but I moved it to my laptop and it functions fine. I've tried trashing the Finder and Desktop Pref files, but that didn't work. I ran the Hardware Diagnostics off of the installer disk, but that didn't find anything wrong. Anyone have any ideas? I'm running the most up-to-date OS that I can on this machine; 10.4.11. Asside from this quirky thing, it's always run fine.

All of the icons and screens have been blown up which extends beyond the boundary of the monitor. It acts as though the display has been magnified and the Dock and other frames disappear off the screen. How to reset this to normal display?
