MacBook Pro :: Delete Files From External Drives And SD Cards?

Jun 3, 2012

I'm a relatively new Mac user (Macbook Pro 15). Can anyone tell me hwo to delete files from an external drive WITHOUT having to empty the entire trash bin. I can easily send the files to trash, however this does not free up disk space until I empty the trash. Personally I don't like to empty all the time as it ceases to become an effective safety net.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: External Drives And SD Cards Not Mounting

May 8, 2012

About 90% of the time, SD cards and external hard drives are not mounting as soon as they're connected (via USB or the SD card slot). I need to launch disk utility, and mount volumes manually (disk utility is detecting the devices). This has persisted through multiple 10.7.X updates.

MacBook :: Cannot Delete Any Files Off External Hard Drive

Jul 19, 2010

Basically I just got myself the latest MacBook as an upgrade from an old laptop. With my old laptop I had no problems what so ever when using my external hard drive. To delete any files I didn't want I would just right click and press the delete option. However, when connected to my new Mac, there is no such option when right clicking on a file. I've tried dragging the file to a recycling bin but I get a message from the finder saying this file can't be deleted. I've tried moving the file out of my hard drive which worked and then deleting it which was fine but the file remained in the external hard drive as I'd only created a copy. I can't figure out how to delete files I don't want. Deleting everything on the hard drive is out of the question.

MacBook Pro :: Cannot Use Memory Cards - Unable To Add / Delete Anything

Mar 12, 2012

I have had my MBP for just over a year now. I am thinking I have somehow altered my settings recently to cause this issue. I have had no problem before using memory cards (such as from my camera) on my MBP. Now, I can open them, but can't delete from them nor add to them. The cards are not locked. I bought a brand new card and popped it in and have the same issue, I can't add anything to it from my computer nor can I change the name on the card.

IMac :: Getting Error 36 On 24" When Transfer Large Files From Desktop To External Drives

Nov 20, 2010

I have a 24" iMac and it was running fine the other week and now I get this annoying error=36 whenever I try to transfer large files from desktop to my external drives. It goes about 1/4 way with the transfers then stops with the error=36 message. I've tried to reset the pram but it won't let me. It just keeps on restarting to the same gray screen with the single short beep tone over and over until I let go of the option, command, P & R buttons and restarts normally but does not reset the pram.

OS X :: How To Delete Files From An External Drive

Sep 15, 2009

I'm new to Mac.

I copied some directories/files from my PC to a LaCie external drive. I then copied them from the drive to the iMac.

I tried to delete, e.g., drag to Trash, them from the external drive while connected to the iMac. It didn't work. I tried a mouse right click, but no delete on Menu. Is there a way to delete files on the iMac? I ended up connecting the drive to the PC, & deleting the files, but I'd like to be able to do the same from the iMac.

MacBook Pro :: External Graphics Cards A Possibility With USB 3?

Oct 1, 2010

Several manufacturers have tried to produce external graphics card boxes to connect to your laptop. Most have given up, but it seems the only real barrier is bandwidth.

MSI have this: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Gra...nal,10527.html

using the Expresscard 34 (max 2.5Gpbs) and say they will switch to USB 3 (4.8Gbps) when it goes mainstream.

Do you think 4.8Gbps is enough to make connecting high end external graphics cards to your laptop a possibility?

I went to disk utilities and re-formatted but it wiped it clean, is there such a way to delete a few files here and there and gain the space they were taking up without going this route?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Delete Files/folders From External Drive

Apr 25, 2012

I have a couple of FW drives hooked up to my iMac and I just discovered I can't trash anything from them. Actually, ever since upgrading to Lion I've been having all sorts of permission issues, but that's another discussion. In this case I've gone to the info windows for these drives and I have only read premission and I can't seem to change it. I've done all the usual things to do so but it remains stuck on "read only." I'm regularly repairing permissions so I don't see that working, tho I haven't tried trashing anything from these drives in a while so I don't know how long it's been this way.

MacBook Pro :: How To Move Original Files To External Drive, Not Just Copy And Delete Original

Dec 31, 2009

I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.

My question is; when I hook up the drives to my laptop I get about 4 drive icons on the desktop for each of the partitions, and when I need to remove them I have to eject them or move them to the trash icon.
Is there a way I can put the drives in a folder of some kind that I can just eject and make the desktop look less cluttered?

MacBook :: No External DVD Drives Will Mount?

I have tried a Samsung Drive and an ASUS slim drive (that worked twice, then stopped working). They do show up in the Disk Utility, but not on the desktop. Disc Utility states that burning is not supported, even though I was able to burn two discs with the ASUS before it stopped as well. I had my keyboard replaced around the same time as the issue starting, it is possible that they could they have messed with something by accident. The tech did also forget to put a screw in above the DVD Drive. I also will note the internal drive is a Combo Drive, not a superdrive.

MacBook Pro :: Managing A MBP With SSD And External Drives For Data?

May 9, 2010

Managing a MBP with SSD and external drives for data?

Its come to the point of upgrading my 2007 MBP 2.4 to a new i7 that I'm thinking of ordering it with a SSD drive. Its the biggest 'hit' to increase performance it seems. Problem is the size of the SSD drives for cost. I can justify the 256GB model but not $1300 for 500GB which would be ideal, and even if I wait 6 months or so to get a 500GB I don't see the price coming down all that much. So...

Let say I order an APPLE SSD in my MBP and use it for a boot drive and some files. How do I configure/set-up the external drive to read its files for Aperture, iTunes, documents.... Thinking now is that I would use a WD 2TB external drive in RAID so I have the files on one 1TB and auto back-up on the other 1TB in one inclosure, and another 1TB drive for Time Machine.

This kind of limits my portability, so I'm also thinking I'd also have a portable larger HD to take with me when I need it. How do I sync the files I'm working on and adding to on one external drive with the other (as easy as possible)?

I may be thinking this all wrong, so any suggestions besides just the 'how to?'

OS X :: Hard Drive For Macbook Pro And External Drives

Aug 14, 2010

So I just installed a larger hard drive in my macbook pro. As OSX was installing I decided to read reviews online (bought it in the store when I got the MBP). They're all really bad about using the drive in a MBP - [URL]. I'm installing the application software now and the hd is spining a lot and vibrating the case and making a lot more noise. I've read a few Seagate reviews and they're not much better for that size.

I want to install a huge hard drive because this is going to be my main computer for at least 8 months while I'm working away from home. Normally I have a desktop w/ a huge hard drive so I don't care what's on my laptop. Anyway, based on these reviews and how the drive has been feeling in the case, I think I might re-evaluate putting a larger drive in, and instead go with an external. I can fit all my photos and music on a 250, but I couldn't fit everything I store on my desktop on a 250.

So my first question is, is there a good, reliable 500gb or larger 5400rpm replacement hard drive for the mbp, that a lot of people like? And then the main question: I have a lot of large video files on my Windows box that are over 4gb, which is the FAT32 limit. When I transferred them from my old computer I had to rar them to smaller files and then un-rar them. This is quite annoying. If I'm gonna have an external drive, I'd like one that can be used on both windows and mac and support 4gb+ files..................

MacBook Pro :: Sudden Disconnection Of External Drives

Mar 16, 2012

I have four external drives connected to my MBP: One USB 2.0 drive, and three that are connected via FireWire 800 (they are connected "in line", i.e. one is connected to the MBP, the second one is connected to the first one, and the third one is connected to the second one). For several months already, I experience the following anomaly:When an external drive hasn't been used for a while it normally goes into sleep mode and the otherwise turning disks come to a standstill. The problem, however, starts when I want to use the data of one of the "sleeping" drives (e.g. by opening the Finder): Then one or more other drives, that are also in sleep mode, but used to come back into "active" mode in the past, are suddenly disconnected. MAC OS X then displays the message that a disk has been disconnected without being formally ejected (via the dustbin). This is not normal, of course, and I am afraid that this behaviour could harm the disks health and live time.I have tried the Disk Utility Tool of OS X for all the drives mentioned, but they seem to be ok.
