I'm using SL, and these do appear to be hidden files. But they are drives (shared apparently, blue with the people on the drive as the logo) and if I click get info it says under server: file//localhost/home. The "net" drive appears as file//localhost/net. Sharing and permissions says - you can only read. I definitely don't run any servers, just browsing for the most part. I haven't noticed this drive until today.

A couple of months ago I was at the head office and connected to the in house Wifi. When I did, a bunch of shared drives or folders showed in my finder under "Shared". I figured no biggie, when I got away from the head office they'd go away. But they didn't. And I can't figure out how to get rid of them.See attached photo.

We have a 13" regular aluminum macbook. We have 2 apple TVs, 24,000 songs, 10 gigs of pictures and a ton of video. We just bought a nice Cannon HD video camera and my wife snaps photographs with her Nikon SLR on every whim. We use an USB HDD to store all the songs and video, which must be plugged in all the time. This laptop is extremely taxed and it is time add another mac.
1. What would be the best option?
2. Can macs talk to each other, i.e. share files, picture, etc.? Can the macs look as exactly the same and being able to access the files in the same place? I don't want to move my wife's cheese.
3. Do mice work like the trackpad? We love the trackpad.
It would be nice to have a faster mac to edit photographs and video. We have yet to upload video from our new camera because via USB it take forever.
I am a photographer. My Mac Tower and Macbook Pros display my external hard drives on the desktop. That makes workflow so much easier. I just purchased an I-Mac and have to access the external HDs through the menu. how I can display the icons for the external HDs on my desktop?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 24" iMac and it was running fine the other week and now I get this annoying error=36 whenever I try to transfer large files from desktop to my external drives. It goes about 1/4 way with the transfers then stops with the error=36 message. I've tried to reset the pram but it won't let me. It just keeps on restarting to the same gray screen with the single short beep tone over and over until I let go of the option, command, P & R buttons and restarts normally but does not reset the pram.

I'm having trouble connecting my Mac to a network server at my office in order to access a shared drive on the network. I can't seem to identify the network share path to fill in the Server Address: field on the Connect to Server window. I have the IP address for the server but am uncertain if it's the same thing as it doesn't seem to be working. Also, I'm not certain what drive syntax the network is running on; whether it's a ftp, afp, or smb.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have the most recent iMac and Macbook Pro on my home network. I'm sharing files between machine and both are using WiFi through a Linksys Router. I have video files (avi's) on one machine that I'm playing on the other machine. The files play no problem but their is an intermittent halting. I probably wouldn't call it a stutter exactly. It stops playing and the screen halts at a particular frame, and then after a bit it starts playing again. I'm wondering if this is normal behaviour or if I have something setup incorrectly on my network. Also, I'm wondering what the solution to this is other than copying the files from one machine to the other.

I have a NAS hard wired to a wireless router. The Mac sees all the folders and files just fine and can read/write.I have a Vista Home Premium PC hard wired to the same wireless router. The Users Folder is shared with full privileges as are the individual users folders. The firewall is off. It runs no "security software".
The Mac can see the Vista PC and also see the Users individual account folders but when I open them I can't see any of the files.I really don't know what direction to go. The Vista PC networked fine with an older Toshiba laptop that the Mac replaced.
I have 160.5MB on my HD, an I have done everything I know how to do to free it up but still nothing!I'm wondering, can I move the home folders to my external hardrives?

1. Apple's Mac Pro RAID Controller, Four Drives, RAID 0+1. One big disk, highest cost.
2. Or, some other RAID Controller (?), Three matching drives, RAID 5. Then, 1 big drive for OS/Applications/Time Machine.
I'd probably move my Home folder to the RAID Array and have just my data striping amongst those drives. Has anyone had a dilemma like this before? I like the idea of hardware separation of my Home folder from the OS.
I have a second hard disk in my G5 that I can access by opening a finder window and clicking on my G5 in the "shared" area on the left in the sources list. However I'd simply like to make an alias to that drive on my desktop. I can't seem to do it though. I'm sure this is easy, and I did it before, but for some reason I can't seem to figure out how to do it again...

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy home folder and desktop are different than before. I closed my macbook for the night to put it to sleep and i heard it reboot. I logged in as normal in the morning but my desktop was different and none of my pictures from iphoto or music from itunes was there, in fact it was as if i had never used the programs. I can find the my profile in the user section and all my stuff is in there but the computer wont load it and when i go to user permissions it says i dont have rights to modify the folder. I tried to rename the folder the original name i used but it wont let me rename it, in fact the computer thinks my profile is a drive and asks me if i want to eject it. I changed the name in april but this is mid may and its rebooted tons of times with the new name. how do i get it to boot to my correct user?

Permissions Problem in Lion: Drives Do Not Show on Desktop I created a new Administrator account in Lion. When I log into this, neither my internal hard drive, nor the two external hard drives, show up on the desktop. I clicked on "Documents" in the dock when logged into this new account to get a window. Here, again the internal HD does not show up.
1) The two external FW drives did show up this way
2) When I click on the various folders in the sidebar (Desktop, Downloads, Movie, Music, Pictures) I get a "the x folder cannot be opened cuz you do not have permissions" type error message.
3) Only "Applications" folder opens in the usual way from this approach.
This problem occurs on both my work and my MBP computers, both of which were just upgraded to Lion.Disk Utility's "Repair Disk Permissions" command successfully completes, but the problem still persists.I'm having several weird program issues (e.g., Photoshop CS3 and FolderSynch do not run) that I think MIGHT be related to this.How did this happen with the upgrade to Lion? Most importantly, how do I fix it and get my permissions back to a normal state?

I've just bought a second mac - little cheapie to use as a second machine. The guy had it set up with three drives showing on the desktop: OSX, CLASSIC and FILES. I don't need OS9/Classic, or the FILES folder, so I threw them in the trash & emptied it. However, it's showing that I only have 4gig of space on the hard drive. I went into system prefs/disc utility, and it's still showing the drives I deleted - although greyed out. Its seems to still be allocating them 5.9gb each of space. In the column on the left in disc utility, it shows the following drive icons:

I tried deleting them through utility, but I must have done something wrong, as they just popped up on my desktop again. Looks like I need to remove partitions.
So I just received my Nehalem Mac Pro today, and I successfully installed three new hard drives in it, and I can access all four of my drives in Finder, but NONE of them (including the Boot Drive that came with the computer) are showing up on the desktop! I can't figure out why so I thought I'd ask here.
Oddly enough, my Firewire 800 Drive shows up on the desktop. Anyone have any ideas why this would happen? And how to fix it?

I looked at a few other posts similar to mine but the answers given to other problems have not worked. There is no way all three of my cords are causing a connection problem and I have repaired and verifyd all the drives and still nothing.

I bought a Mini yesterday and am attempting (read: failing) to set up my home network. Here is what I have: Netgear WNDR3700 home network with a WPA2 wireless network. A Windows 7 (completely updated) desktop with file sharing but not home group on. I have even deactivated my windows firewall while attempting to set this up. A Mac Mini running OSX 10.4 with Windows Networking activated
I originally hoped to plug my mac mini in and, while I was quickly able to browse the web, I was less than successful in accessing my shared files that are on my windows 7 machine. I then deactivated the homegroup and simply "shared" the folders via right-clicking and sharing to all users on the network. I am unable to see the mac mini when opening up the network which was the first sign of trouble. I have all of the file sharing options on Windows 7 and Mac Mini checked (network discovery, etc.) but do not have any luck. The farthest success I have reached was I manually entered the ip of my windows 7 pc on the mac mini and while I saw the shared folders, they were empty. Note: I do have identical user accounts set up between the two computers, with the same user name and no password.
I haven't been able to figure out why, on my icloud homepage, I don't have the photo stream icon. I've gone through my preferences many times to see if photo stream is checked and it is, and still no icon on the homepage. I'm at a lose.

Got a iMac running OS 10.6, and am wanting to print from a Samsung ML-1710P printer connected via serial port to a XP PC. Everything seems to all be communicating with each other, except I eventually get a print error on the XP machine in the print manager. Can anyone help with this?
Notes:
- the computer and printer can be seen by the mac.
- when a print job is sent, the mac spools and sends it "ok"
- the XP print manager status changes to "printing" then after about 1 min changes to an error.
- the latest driver for that printer is installed on the XP machine.
- I have tried to use the Generic Postscript Printer driver, the Generic PCL Laser Printer driver and an old Mac OS10.3 driver from the Mac end. There are no newer drivers available. I have shared this successfully printer before, but only from another windows machine.
Last night when I went into Itunes there was a basicly a hd in my shared folder with a couple hundred tunes and movies on it that I had never seen before. I actually clicked on a couple and they worked, I watch a bit of a movie. so I know I wasn't seeing things !
My scenerio is I live and work in a hotel. The HD in the shared folder had a name "colb's mp4". Since I could, I checked the hotel registry and saw the registered name in the room across from me was Colby......
How did he do this and how can I prevent this from happening again? My room has a hard wired connection and as far as I can tell he has a wirless connection??
Looking at MacBooks, iMacs and Mac minis with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, which share memory with the main system. I notice on all 2GB machines the graphics has 256MB of SDRAM and the machines with 4GB the graphics has 512MB. Does this mean if I bought a base model mac mini, with 1GB memory and 128MB SDRAM, increased it to 4GB of memory, I would have 512MB of shared video SDRAM?
