View 14 RepliesI eventually opted to buy a new Mac Pro. I would like to install a 5th hard disk into it for windows. I assume this should be much easier than with the old model as I understand the optical drives are now SATA, so routing the cable shouldn't be difficult.
What I would like to know is what kind of brackets would be required to fix a 3.5" HD into a space normally used for a 5.25" optical disk space.
I've just bought a second mac - little cheapie to use as a second machine. The guy had it set up with three drives showing on the desktop: OSX, CLASSIC and FILES. I don't need OS9/Classic, or the FILES folder, so I threw them in the trash & emptied it. However, it's showing that I only have 4gig of space on the hard drive. I went into system prefs/disc utility, and it's still showing the drives I deleted - although greyed out. Its seems to still be allocating them 5.9gb each of space. In the column on the left in disc utility, it shows the following drive icons:
19.1 GB MAXTOR 92049U3
OSX
CLASSIC
FILES
I tried deleting them through utility, but I must have done something wrong, as they just popped up on my desktop again. Looks like I need to remove partitions.
i went back and looked and found i had swapped cables! EEK...odd though, that the raw command from the command line knew which drive was which?...Kept here for posterity just in case you were wondering what i wasted bandwidth on...Moderated please feel free to delete whole thing if you wish i hope someone can help me because i'm confused.i decided to salvage the old superdrive from my old G5 macpro and install it into the 2nd optical drive bay (lower) of my new mac pro.problem is, even though i don't think i swapped anything, the EJECT key now defaults to the lower optical drawer when it deafulted to the upper optical bay with the 2nd drive not installed.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of planning a hackintosh file server so I can source my data out from my Mac Pro in order to have the flexibility of replacing it with, say, an iMac, if I ever wanted to.Though the server is not going to be my primary machine I want it to have an iApps-compatible DVD burner, which has to be SATA to allow for system installation on the hack box. So, which are the current "Apple shipped/supported" optical drives you guys and gals have in your 2009 Mac Pros? (I already searched the forums and the rest of the Net and didn't find an answer.)

I have a MacPro 1,1 with a 2 x 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon and I just upgraded to OSX Lion 10.7.4. Upon upgrading my system stopped recognizing the two optical drives I had installed. Is there a patch or are there drivers that I can download to fix this? Has this happened to anyone else? I was prepared to lose access to some older software but not my optical drives!!!
When I do a "system report" through "About this mac" both of the drives are listed but they dont show up on my deskop. I have an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A and a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S202N

i'm sure there are many people who use spare batteries like me. but how do you manage them though? i find it very annoying having to charge them one by one. charging 1 battery takes a few hours, which is almost fine. but when you have a spare battery, it takes twice as much longer to charge them both. not fun. a separate battery charger will help greatly reducing charging time
View 18 Replies View RelatedGetting OCZ SSD to install on MacPro 08 in second optical bay. Must have User files on separate drive due to SSD will barely hold system. I figured I'd have to clone my primary boot drive to spare partition, boot from clone, setup it up with User in other location from SysPrefs > Users > control click current user > advanced options, restart then dump items form User in order to have the drive sized for the SSD. Once the intermmediate tranfer drive was set up, clone it to the SSD and use as boot.
I tested clone before actuall data transfers. Problem is after switching User file location from the booted clone, restarting, but re-booting looks like clean install. No preferences showed up, missing all but stock apps in dock, desktop image back to clean install, printer needing registration.Tried advanced options again to locate User on same original boot drive, restart, same thing. I did not remove User files yet from the cloned drive which I was booting. Just switched location.

My friend is looking into buying the new 27" iMac Core i7 to replace his PC desktop. The only thing holding him back is that he has an analog surround sound system he uses for his speakers. I am having a hard time myself finding a converter that can make his speakers work in the iMac's optical digital output port. Any products out there that will do that?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to disable the trackpad on a Macbook Pro? I ask because my previous Compaq laptop had a physical button to turn off the trackpad. This was actually very useful in preventing inadvertent actions, with certain programs. Maybe it's not that big of a deal for most people, but after having a computer that was able to do this, it just seems like a nice feature to have.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI restored one disk onto another disk using Disk Utility and now I have three aliases on my hard drive called "var", "tmp" and "etc". I know what you're thinking... those are part of the Unix background in Mac OS X and I am smart enough to know that I cannot delete them, so my question is. How the heck can I hide them. I really don't like seeing them there. Other than that, my new drive is running fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSeveral manufacturers have tried to produce external graphics card boxes to connect to your laptop. Most have given up, but it seems the only real barrier is bandwidth.
MSI have this: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Gra...nal,10527.html

Do you think 4.8Gbps is enough to make connecting high end external graphics cards to your laptop a possibility?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI remembered that at one point Mac Pro's CPU was a direct successor to its previous model, as in you can buy one of the successor chip and replace the older one, since the MLB could support it.
Is this the case with Harpertown to Nehalem? Can you just go on Newegg and get 2 Nehalem, and throw them in to the current Mac Pro?
I log into the Blackboard Academic Suite daily (online) to check my class announcements and grades. Every time I log in, I have to enter my username and password. This gets pretty old. Is it possible to have a keychain automatically fill in this information for me? Because that is what I do with all my other login sites. It hasn't ever asked if I would like my password and username to be saved, and I'm sure it's for security. I've tried creating a new keychain and putting in the information, but still no success.
