PowerPC :: 1 G5 Processor Apparently Disconnected
Dec 6, 2010
This is an unfortunate development! It appears that one of my processors has died on me! Is this, in fact possible - and still be running? I have included a screen shot, using Temperature Monitor to show the processors and ambient temps. What other way could I determine if it truly dead? And lastly, can a replacement be had? (I'm fairly adept at computer repair) If so, where?

I wanted to do some research on this processor, do you guys know what is the processor model code for the iMac's processor?
Is it a mobile processor or a desktop processor?
What is the difference between this one and this one?

I know this has probably been asked before but I have no idea how to formulate search terms to not get a ton of junk results, so please bare with me on this.
I have a PowerBook G4 with a 1.67GHz processor and DVI output and a retarded graphics card. I want to buy a Pismo and hotrod it as mentioned by The Apple Blog. Basically, I'm asking if I can pull the processor out of the G4 and drop it in the Pismo.
Also, if there's any site I can look up sockets and whatnot for these guys, let me know. MacTracker doesn't mention that stuff as far as I know.

Tonight, I might have a chance to get a G5 processor from a friend, who wants to dissassemble his iMac G5 and sell it for parts (he's going to buy a 24" iMac C2D). Should I replace the G4 processor in my iBook G4 with a G5?.
I really want to do this and show off with this (if successful) in the public.

I can't seem to find specific information that would tell me if a 1.25 GHz processor from a MDD G4 would swap into a G4 Quicksilver (733 MHz) I have sitting in a corner.
They are both single processor machines, but I question the compatibility. I don't have the MDD machine with the 1.25 GHZ processor yet, so I can't look at them both for comparison.

I have found a cheap, broken Power Mac G5 for sale on the internet. It is a 2.5 GHz dual model. The owner says that one of the G5 processors is damaged.
Will the Power Mac work with only one processor? If I bought another processor will it have to be the same speed?

Just got a free Powerbook G4 15" 1.5Ghz 768MB RAM. I installed Panther 10.3.9 and have notices it's rather primitive. Specs say I can install up to 10.5.8 OS. So my questions are:
1. What is the optimal OS for my G4 and how can I get it (whether it be by purchase or DL)?
2. Should I upgrade the ram and/or processor?

I am looking for a motherboard and possibly processor for a MDD g4 powermac. I need the 167mhz version, rev with dual firewire 400 ports. Also, possibly a dual 1.25ghz processor module. I have either a dead processor or motherboard in this machine and I am having trouble finding some used replacement parts.

I have a couple of power mac g4s around the place and I recently swapped some of the processors around. I originally had a pair of g4 466 "digital audio" machines and a g4 400 "sawtooth". After moving them around I end up with with a 466 "digital audio" a 533 "sawtooth" and a 350 "digital audio". Does it have to do with the bus speed?

if it was possible to swap out the first intel processors with the newer ones the imacs are coming with. i found this info and mainly looks just as tricky as open heart surgery to risk my imac doing, and thats just replacing the processor itself.

I am using a G5 Quad processor with a GeForce 6600 graphics card. I am working on a project in Second Life [URL] and have been advised that I need to update the driver on my graphics card to solve some problems encountered in Second Life. There does not seem to be an update for this card for Macs. I have asked Apple for help, but they have told me my serial number does not exist even though it is registered and I have had technical help from them in the past. Second Life say they do not support this graphics card!

I just bought an iMac with a G4 processor from a friend... The only problem is that apparently some vital file was deleted and as a result, it will not start up. I have a Tiger recovery disc, but because I'm only being shown the gray apple screen and the loading circle, I can't actually use it. Any ideas?

I have a G3 Beige Minitower (233MHz model) that I recently upgraded with a A/V Personality card I got from a friend of mine. It booted with the new personality card just fine. Now I got a hold of a G3 450MHz ZIF processor card and I put it into my G3, swapping out the old 233MHz one. I also took off the red jumper block and put some jumpers in place for a 450MHz processor. (Thanks to MacAddict Issue 30 for the pinouts, see "Overclocking your G3"). Now I got it booting, chiming and the power light going green, but no video coming out of the onboard video card (that came with the machine). I also have another Hard Drive, a Ultra-Wide SCSI card and a USB card, all 3rd party.

I have a PowerBook G4 15" Laptop and it's recently started making a buzzing noise. It drives me crazy! The noise seems to come from the processor and happens whenever I'm scrolling through web pages, hovering over my dock, launching applications or pretty much whenever the computer is doing anything.
I've googled the issue and found it to be quite common, even being some posts on this forum. Here's the best info I've found so far:
"The squeaking is actually the processor going into Nap mode, and has been noticed on a number of G4 and G5 models. To save power when the processor has a little bit of idle time, it essentially turns itself off. What is happening when it's squeaking like this is it is alternating very rapidly between going in and out of Napping as the processor waits for more things to do. I've noticed that it happens most often during an active SSL connection; an https:// connection, Software Update, checking E-mail on a secure server, or any other secure connections can make this squeaking noise. There are many other ways to produce it too, such as scrolling through a web page or some other more graphic-intensive process.
If you want to check and/or get rid of it, you can download the CHUD tools (part of Apple's Developer Tools, and also available separately). The Processor preference pane (formerly called Hardware) will let you disable Napping, after which point the squeaking should go away. The squeaking also goes away if you reduce processor speed by turning Energy Saver processor performance down to Reduced. However, I'd recommend that you leave Napping enabled (to reduce heat output and increase battery life), so leave it in the default state."
I've downloaded the CHUD tools program and turned off Nap mode, I think. But it still makes the noises! I cannot figure out how to reduce processor speed. So frustrating. Anyone have any advice?

I have two terabyte hard drives in my desktop. Since I barely boot the desktop anymore, I pulled one out and hooked it up in a USB enclosure. I was using it to watch movies off of. I made a shortcut ("alias"?) to the drive (which was mounted using NTFS-3g) and put it in the movies folder so that I could access it from frontrow. I had a bunch of seasons of Seinfeld, Simpsons, and Family guy that i ripped from DVD using handbrake, but there was also backups of alot of my Software CD's on the drive. Nothing I can't make again from the originals, but a pain to do.
Regardless, all of a sudden (A day after hooking it up), everything is gone. On the Mac side, I just see a folder labeled "System Volume information". I unplugged it and plugged it in to windows and I just see a couple files that get created by Mac OS ("trashes", etc), none of my actual data. Both sides, however, recognize that only 27GB is free on the drive which leaves me some hope that I haven't lost everything. Does anyone have suggestions for recovering this stuff?
The drive is a WD Caviar Black 7200RPM 1TB disk. As far as I'm concerned, they are the best 1TB drive made from a warranty / reliability standpoint, but obviously disk failures do happen....this doesn't seem like a HDD failure to me though as the drive *seems* to be working correctly. I tested it with HDTune and the transfer rate is still the same, so it seems like something got corrupt somehow (not a mechanical failure)...

Okay. So my Airport has decided that I apparently have no IP address. I know this is somehow my fault, and I've tried resetting it via terminal, but each time I fix it, I have internet connection for about 5 minutes and then it cuts out again. I've looked under my network settings and there's absolutely no IP address. Nothing. I set up one of the Google servers (8.8.8.8), but that is only getting me so far. I just don't know what to do next. I'm running Lion, because I know that will make a difference in how everything is set up. I have also tried to release a new one via DHCP, but that doesn't do anything when I try it.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

My son spilled a diet coke on my macbook. It mostly got on the keyboard and monitor. I removed the power chord, turned it off, and wiped off the soda immediately. But of course it's liquid so it is probably moved under the keys right? I turned it back on a few hours later and there doesn't seem to be any problems. Is it possible there was no damage?
