OS X :: Where Did My Files Go / MBP Apparently Wiped Drive
Aug 1, 2009
I have two terabyte hard drives in my desktop. Since I barely boot the desktop anymore, I pulled one out and hooked it up in a USB enclosure. I was using it to watch movies off of. I made a shortcut ("alias"?) to the drive (which was mounted using NTFS-3g) and put it in the movies folder so that I could access it from frontrow. I had a bunch of seasons of Seinfeld, Simpsons, and Family guy that i ripped from DVD using handbrake, but there was also backups of alot of my Software CD's on the drive. Nothing I can't make again from the originals, but a pain to do.
Regardless, all of a sudden (A day after hooking it up), everything is gone. On the Mac side, I just see a folder labeled "System Volume information". I unplugged it and plugged it in to windows and I just see a couple files that get created by Mac OS ("trashes", etc), none of my actual data. Both sides, however, recognize that only 27GB is free on the drive which leaves me some hope that I haven't lost everything. Does anyone have suggestions for recovering this stuff?
The drive is a WD Caviar Black 7200RPM 1TB disk. As far as I'm concerned, they are the best 1TB drive made from a warranty / reliability standpoint, but obviously disk failures do happen....this doesn't seem like a HDD failure to me though as the drive *seems* to be working correctly. I tested it with HDTune and the transfer rate is still the same, so it seems like something got corrupt somehow (not a mechanical failure)...

Clearly there must be a way to do this, right? Can I install off an external hard drive? Off a USB drive? Share my macbook pro's DVD drive somehow? If the hard drive on the mac mini is completely reformatted and I plug it into the USB port on the external hard drive which I partition and install the Leopard DMG would it be able to boot off of it?

After installing OS X Lion, all of my files are gone from My Documents and my desktop has been wiped clean. I also installed this on my laptop and that seems to be fine.

I am having an issue with a G5 my buddy just gave to me. The computer had been working fine for him, he recently got a new iMac. Anyways, we wiped the hard drive and I took it to my place to do a clean install with 10.4. Upon start-up I get a screen with a folder icon that flashes between a question mark and the mac face. I have tried holding down C upon boot, no success. Dual CPU powermac G5, bought in 2003 or 04 (he thinks 2003). Do not have original installation disk. Have retail copy of 10.4 If I hold down the option key when powering on. On the screen appears a mouse icon which I can move, as well as two icons. A circular arrow in a box, and a right-pointing arrow in a box.

Yes it would be a wise move to just reinstall mac osx first however i do not plan on using it at all, this mac was given to me and i prefer to use windows, ive used windows perfectly in the past before.
Currently i only have access to a windows computer, an 8gb usb (for the win 7 installation), 4gb usb (using rEFIt) and the mac itself.

I purchased an external harddrive to back up my entire student drive. The drive had to be formatted to be compatible with a Mac, and I did this with the customer support over the phone. Used basic copy and paste methods to put my information on the ehd. I triple checked to make sure it stayed there, by properly ejecting drive and plugging it back in. Had my mbPro wiped clean entirely, reloaded Leopard, and am now left with just basic applications and files. Plug in the ehd, and it shares the exact same information as my current wiped-clean drive. I made it as an exact replica of my information filled mac, and it is now an exact replica of my empty mac. All documents, music, photos, applications, etc. GONE. This information was valuable to me beyond words, and I need it back. Does TimeMachine have anything to do with this? I have never used this application, but upon plugging in my ehd, it asked for SOMETHING (which I don't remember).

This is an unfortunate development! It appears that one of my processors has died on me! Is this, in fact possible - and still be running? I have included a screen shot, using Temperature Monitor to show the processors and ambient temps. What other way could I determine if it truly dead? And lastly, can a replacement be had? (I'm fairly adept at computer repair) If so, where?

Okay. So my Airport has decided that I apparently have no IP address. I know this is somehow my fault, and I've tried resetting it via terminal, but each time I fix it, I have internet connection for about 5 minutes and then it cuts out again. I've looked under my network settings and there's absolutely no IP address. Nothing. I set up one of the Google servers (8.8.8.8), but that is only getting me so far. I just don't know what to do next. I'm running Lion, because I know that will make a difference in how everything is set up. I have also tried to release a new one via DHCP, but that doesn't do anything when I try it.

My son spilled a diet coke on my macbook. It mostly got on the keyboard and monitor. I removed the power chord, turned it off, and wiped off the soda immediately. But of course it's liquid so it is probably moved under the keys right? I turned it back on a few hours later and there doesn't seem to be any problems. Is it possible there was no damage?

As the header says, the fan in my Mac Pro is now operating at a constant 2700 rpms and, per iStat, believes that Core 4 is at 260 degrees. This is from COLD startup as in overnight. All other cores are operating in the low to mid 70s. So, obviously it's impossible for core 4 to be 260 degrees on startup and highly unlikely it would be that hot, ever. I've done the SMC RST thing both ways (button pushing and unplugging).

about an hour ago i downloaded stuffit the zip program. I got the link from a post here at this forum. As soon as i installed it my screen flashed real quick and my background changed back to the stock "space" one. I then noticed all my music, pics, files, games, and movies have been erased. When i open iphoto, safari, itunes, etc. it is like I'm opening for the first time. I have searched and searched and never found a fix or a reason why this happened. I don't see any change to the user fold or in the accounts settings. I have restarted several times. I don't have any backups to restore from because I haven't purchased time capsule yet.

If a user begins a 35-pass HD wipe, makes it to around 15 passes, and then clicks 'skip', does that negate the effect of the erase?

Just yesterday I'm opening up iTunes and to my disbelief all my music was not there (40+ gigs worth). I try and close down and open iTunes back up but nothing, I restart my xp computer and still nothing. So I look under file explorer and it seems like all my music is still located under the "iTunes music" folder. So I uninstalled all the apple products on my computer and reinstalled iTunes 9 et. Al. And still no results. Does anyone know how to get my library to show up in iTunes?

I updated MacJournal, and to my horror, see nearly all the notes in multiple journals BLANKtwo years worth of notes just gone. The page titles are still there, but no content. The data is critically important to my business. Where is it? How do I get it back? FYI: Ive been on the road for work, which means no Time Capsule backups for the past week. While on the road, Ive been constantly working on four pages in one Journalthese, plus maybe four others in different journals still show data. My guess is that restoring from an older backup will mean sacrificing newer data...which is not an option. Ive dug through Mariner Softwares forums and blogs, but cant find anything (other than angry posts from people saying Mariner is horrible about responding to problems....great. This is a nightmare.

Suddenly after crashing my safari's history seems to be vanished. I've looked into the folder ~/Library/Safari and noticed that History.plist got wiped. I have historyindex.sk (it's about 9mb) file though. Is it possible to recover my history somehow? To decode that index file or something? (I haven't made manual backups).

While upgrading from Tiger 10.4 to Snow Leopard 10.6 (Mac Box Set purchased from apple store) on my macbook pro the installation process froze up. Tried several times with same outcome. Even wiped the disk & reinstalled original software (tiger 10.4). No disk repairs necessary. So starting with a clean slate snow leopard still wont make it through the installation process.

When I got there I realized that she was also running windows. I went into the Mac and didn't touch windows. I connected the external hard drive although it was not working so I turned on time machine and tried to use this although didn't have time to set up time capsule so I just cancelled it and shut it. She turned her Mac on this morning and said that windows had completely disappeared! She took it to her local computer store, not an apple store, and was told that because time machine had been turned on and off that windows and the hard drive associated with it had all been wiped!!

Wiped the Drive and reinstalled from an OS X 10.7.3 from an Installer I had DL from the Mac App Store. Opened the Mac App Store and had to buy iPhoto, the only App the customer uses from the iLife Suite.Â

I use Mac OS X Mail and generally have very few issues. However, I ocassionally receive emails which I know are formatted as HTML, but they nevertheless show up as text... and sort of jumbled text at that (i.e., with URL links expanded inline and other issues that cause the email to be difficult to read). It doesn't happen extremely often, but it does happen often enough to be annoying. I have Mail sync'ed to several accounts: one POP3, and two IMAP as I recall. It has happened with emails retrieved from each service at one time or another.Â
As I understand it, an HTML email usually also contains a text version within the content... and each mail client has to recognize a given email as either HTML or text (or RTF). Indeed, I can view the raw source for the email in Mail, and I see in the payload of the email statements such as "This is a multi-part message in MIME format" followed by sections denoted as Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 and later as Content-Type: text/html; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64. It just seems that Mail occassionally ignores the text/html section.Â
Is there a way to force Mail to switch display of a given message to HTML or to text? I see options to select "Text Encoding" under the Message menu bar option, various stylistic choices under the Format header, and even the View Raw Source option under View | Message menu bar option. This last option (View | Message) also has some options regarding display "alternatives" (plaintext, best, next, etc) but all are greyed-out. Perhaps this is the issue and Mail is simply not understanding the HTML due to a slight mistake in the format of the content and it thinks it is only displayable as plain text?

I suddenly cannot access the several thousand photos in my iPhoto Library. I believe my computer must have automatically downloaded and upgraded the version I previously had. Now I get an error message that reads: The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete. I still need my images able to be read by previous versions since I go back and forth editing between older desktops. Is there a way to access the photo library without okaying the upgrade? If I reinstall an older version of iPhoto, will I lose the existing library of photos?
