PowerPC :: G3 Beige Minitower Failing To Boot After Processor Swap

Jun 1, 2010

I have a G3 Beige Minitower (233MHz model) that I recently upgraded with a A/V Personality card I got from a friend of mine. It booted with the new personality card just fine. Now I got a hold of a G3 450MHz ZIF processor card and I put it into my G3, swapping out the old 233MHz one. I also took off the red jumper block and put some jumpers in place for a 450MHz processor. (Thanks to MacAddict Issue 30 for the pinouts, see "Overclocking your G3"). Now I got it booting, chiming and the power light going green, but no video coming out of the onboard video card (that came with the machine). I also have another Hard Drive, a Ultra-Wide SCSI card and a USB card, all 3rd party.

PowerPC :: 1.25 GHz Processor From A MDD G4 Would Swap Into A G4 Quicksilver?

Apr 20, 2007

I can't seem to find specific information that would tell me if a 1.25 GHz processor from a MDD G4 would swap into a G4 Quicksilver (733 MHz) I have sitting in a corner.

They are both single processor machines, but I question the compatibility. I don't have the MDD machine with the 1.25 GHZ processor yet, so I can't look at them both for comparison.

PowerPC :: G4 Processor Swap - Digital Audio?

May 25, 2007

I have a couple of power mac g4s around the place and I recently swapped some of the processors around. I originally had a pair of g4 466 "digital audio" machines and a g4 400 "sawtooth". After moving them around I end up with with a 466 "digital audio" a 533 "sawtooth" and a 350 "digital audio". Does it have to do with the bus speed?

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Failing To Boot Up - Fans Whirring Fast

Dec 16, 2008

Originally my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz 17 inch) was failing to boot up. It would get to the grey screen and the apple and it would just stay there and pretend to be a rocket ship with it's little fan whirring as fast as it could after five minutes. So I reset the SMU, fan stopped, still wouldn't boot. Booted it off the 10.5 install cd (which it was running fine until it wouldn't start up). It wouldn't see the Macintosh HD for a while unless you went to disc utility > partitions and changed it from current to one and instead of applying just let it sit there before switching it back to current. Took about 10 minutes of sitting there.

I did disk repair said there was no problem. Disk permission repair said there was a few problems and said it repaired them. To be safe I backed everything up using target disk mode (where the fan tried to play rocket again even though I reset the SMU), erased my hard drive and reinstalled. Now it shuts down randomly when it goes idle, and takes 10 minutes to start up past loading the dock to load the apple bar Mac HD icon and whatever is on the desktop (which is a single empty folder).

PowerPC :: IMac With G4 Processor Refuses To Boot?

Dec 11, 2008

I just bought an iMac with a G4 processor from a friend... The only problem is that apparently some vital file was deleted and as a result, it will not start up. I have a Tiger recovery disc, but because I'm only being shown the gray apple screen and the loading circle, I can't actually use it. Any ideas?

PowerPC :: Beige G3 Power Supply Jumpers

Aug 2, 2006

I am trying to switch out mobos. I want to put a desktop mobo in a minitower case. But my understanding there is a jumper that can be changed to switch between the models. Has something to do with the power supply differences if I remember correctly. Anyone know where on the motherboard that would be located? in need to find it because currently using the desktop mobo in the minitower case it will not power on at all.

Sure, we've all THOUGHT about it before... but I found an article (about 7 months old) were Dan Frakes has put it into WRITING.

It could certainly fill the role of a gaming mac (without the cost of the Mac Pro)

MacBook :: Failing To Boot To OS X Or From OS X Disc?

Apr 10, 2010

My MacBook 13" which was the current model when I bought it in September '08 decided after a normal shut down to not boot up the next time I tried. It gets as far as loading the grey apple symbol and then gets no further (no loading cog etc.

Naturally my first thought was to try to repair from my OSX install disc but when I booted from this the same problem occurred (the grey apple symbol, no further). The disc is definitely recognised by the disc drive and is displayed when I hold the option key on startup. I also tried using a friends OSX disc and the same problem occurred so I'm assuming it can't be the disc.

I have tried booting in safe mode, single user mode & verbose mode, none of which work although I am able to see where the script gets to in a safe mode boot by using the option that shows this .

The weirdest thing is that I have dual-boot set up with Ubuntu on my macbook and I can still boot to ubuntu fine, also all linux live discs I have tried in order to investigate the hard drive have had no trouble booting.

OS X :: New MBP I5 Does Not Boot After Hard Disk Swap?

Apr 24, 2010

I received my new i5 MBP today. After booting it once with the installed HDD to check if it's ok, I exchanged the hard disk for the one in my Late 2008 Macbook Pro. After doing this, my Late 2008 Macbook Pro boots fine with the (new) hard disk from the new i5 MBP, but the i5 MBP does not boot with my old hard disk.

To give you some details:

- I have installed 10.6.3 on the (old) hard disk that's not booting.

- The i5 MBP boots fine from the installation DVD

- Disk utility finds and can read my hard disk, no errors

- PRAM NVRAM reset did not help

- when booting in safe mode, I can see the system stop booting after or while loading Extensions.mkext

My guess is, it tries to boot and load the wrong Extensions for the new system (CPU? GPU?). I have no idea how to fix this.

Solution: Re-install Mac OS X from the installation DVD that came with the i5 on top of the existing (old) system. This takes around 45min. and leaves your data intact, but adds the Core i5/i7 support.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: After Security Update Macbook Pro Is Failing To Boot: Error 19?

May 10, 2012

Update 2012-002 on macbook pro. When rebooting, after 'successful' install, I now see a repeating cycle of Error = 19, unable to mount root. From my *nix perspective I fear the worst - that the boot sector (at a minimum) is hosed. I tried  (running Lion 10.7.x) booting with the command key down - no joy. do not currently have my install disk (sadly, it's in storage, somewhere). I'm concerned about this. this is VERY unusual for an update. This is a relatively new drive (750GB drive installed about 8 months ago). At no point have I seen errors, and believe me, I look. Assuming the worst case is repartitioning? (ah for hte days of 'fdisk /mbr')

MacBook Pro :: Failing To Boot Up Despite Disk Utility Repair And PRAM

Jun 2, 2014

Problem: MBP frozen on boot up screen with Apple logo and turning gear (which freezes after a while aswell)

Solutions attempted: disk repair via custom recovery- disk utility, PRAM

Device: MacBook Pro 15" (early 2010) running 10.9

Additional info-

Never had any issue with the device and this seems to have happened all of a sudden. Installed an SSD a few months ago, and just realised the ssd did not have a recovery partition. However I connected my older hardrive via USB to access recovery which seemed to work fine.

NOTE: for the past few weeks, every now and then I was unable to power the device off and whenever this occurred, there seemed to be a few bugs (ie unable to empty thrash-error 50 and enable to increase/decrease volume/screen brightness). However, holding the power button and restarting it seemed to have fixed it.

Had the same issue but this time around MBP failed to boot up.

Info:
MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

This AM swapped the drives in the bays so The Bad Drive is now in the Lower Bay. However now Diskwarrior does not see the damaged Drive nor does Disk Utility.

PowerPC :: Swap TiBook VGA LCD For DVI Screen?

Jul 30, 2006

Does anyone know if I can swap a VGA Tibook LCD screen onto a DVI Titanium Powerbook? Is the higher resolution in the screen set up itself? I actually wouldn't mind at all if it would work because I actually like the lower res screens of the earlier tibooks. Just wondering if it can be done.. and I don't mean taking out the actual LCD screen itself from the Tibook case and frame, I mean actually SWAPPING the LCDs and plugging them in. I just wonder if the older LCD could be plugged into the logic board or not. It seems that they would fit the case. I'd really like a faster DVI Tibook with the lower res screen because the font sizes are larger.

Mac Pro :: How To Swap 320GB Boot Disk Files With The 500GB Data Drive

Oct 1, 2008

The standard HD that came with my Mac Pro was a 320GB which I thought would be big enough. I also added a 500GB in bay two for all of my work files. As I migrate all of my files onto the Mac now, I'm realizing that the 320GB is quickly running out of space with all the photos, music, etc. and my work files currently take up about 50GB so the 320Gb would have been better for that. Is there an easy way to swap my 320GB boot disk files with the 500GB data drive?

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Failing To Recognize New Hdd - Only Black Screen

Jan 3, 2009

I have an rev. A iMac G5 that was purchased in January of 2005. The applecare has long expired. However, in May of 2008 due to factory defect Apple replaced the logic board, power supply and super drive [URL]. In December 2008 after experiencing problems with my hard drive I took my computer to the apple store. There they said it was dying and it would be cheaper to replace it myself. After purchasing a seagate hdd [URL] my computer won't recognize it. It stays at the black screen while the power light glows. After a few minutes the fans kick in at full force. I tested the hdd in another iMac G5 rev. B and it works fine. Any ideas on what the problem is or how to resolve it?

PowerPC :: Emac Failing To Mount In Target Mode?

Jul 15, 2009

I have a Emac G4 1.24mhz which I bought from Ebay, to replace my sons old Imac G3 (He moaned he could not watch Iplayer on it)

The problem I have is that It will not install from the combo drive, the drive mounts any disc so I know it not the drive.
I know the hard drive good (80gb as it came from a Imac G3 which was running Panther 10.3.9 when I swapped the drives over the Emac booted but after a while it would freeze.

I have tried to reinstall Panther but if fails to recognise the cd from a straight cd boot ( when pressing C ) and only shows me the broken folder. The only disc the Emac boots from is my G5 IMac install disc but this will only allow me to reformat the drive.( which I have done)

I have also tried to boot from Target Mode using my Imac G5 via a new Firewire cable and the Emac fails to mount. I get the bouncing fire logo on the Emac but that is all.

I have tried to boot and inscert the cable at the same time but this has failed.

Would it be a firmware problem?

It is possible to boot the machine into linux so I could use this os but my son likes Mac OS and been using it since he was two

PowerPC :: Using G5 And MacPro Hard Drive Swap And Display

Jul 16, 2009

Hoping someone can help me figure this out. I swapped HDDs between a G5 and MacPro this morning. The MacPro was connected to a large LCD TV via HDMI for it's display (using a DVI to HDMI adapter) and it worked great for just scrolling images of our projects (no audio). When I put it's HDD in the G5 and connected it to the display the same way, I got nothing on the screen. Thinking it was a video card issue on the G5 end, I plugged in a different monitor and rebooted the G5. This time I got the flashing question mark folder meaning it couldn't find an OS to boot. So now I can't tell what the issue is. I thought HDDs between G5s and MacPros were the same? If not does this mean the older G5 drive won't work in the MacPro tower? (I haven't tried yet).

Also, if there's any site I can look up sockets and whatnot for these guys, let me know. MacTracker doesn't mention that stuff as far as I know.
