Power Mac G5 :: CPU Died - Software Crash?
Dec 25, 2007
I was watching a movie, went to research something the movie inspired me about and I noticed that CPU1 was showing 75% load and CPU2 was showing 0% load and by the CPU graphs had been for about a minute. About 10 seconds later the computer locked up and I was forced to hold the power button to shut it down. I restarted and It's been running normal for the last half hour. Is this something I should look into or maybe just a software crash?

My Acomdata twin drive 2TB died today. It won't power up. I think the drives are okay, but not for sure because it won't power up. I have all my ripped movies on it! What can I do? I was thinking maybe I can buy another one (same model) and plug those two drives in the new one.

I was given a 1999 model. The power supply has died. What are my options? Should I even bother? Its in great shape otherwise. Can I get a 3rd party supply? How do I check this to see for sure that it is bad?

I recently purchased a 30" apple monitor to be used in tandem with my 23" cinema monitor. The card that was shipped with my G5 twin 2.5 GZ will not support the 30" as it lacks dual link dvi. Hence the 9600 pro for Mac & PC card. The problem is this...The screens light up at start up but the computer crashes before the boot sequence completes. I took the card to the apple service center where I bought it and it worked fine on both their G4 and G5 machines running Tiger. I cant make it work on mine in Tiger or Leopard.

Started G5, got a question mark. Rebooted from disk. Tried to repair. Told me it could not exit and complete repair to HD. Restarted again. This time everything in utility window red. Message is Fatal Hardware error to disk utility. Back-up if not completely failed and replace with new drive.
Not great at behind the scenes with my mac. Does this mean a shop visit. Any estimate on cost to me. Had lots of Macs. This is the first to crash and burn and its not that old.

I've been reading a great deal in this forum regarding the issue in the subject line of this post. But it all has to do with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. My 10.5.8 on my system has not been updated in any way for a while. So how is it that in the last couple of weeks all of my Power PC apps still on board, are going through this crash on start up routine. If I select 'relaunch' from the dialogue window that pops up upon the intial crash, the app will run fairly normally. This can't be about a security update like with Snow Leopard.

Yesterday I was on facebook when my ibook g4 went black and turned off. There wasn't any beeping/flashing or anything but it won't turn on. When I press the little button on the battery 5 yellow lights light up so I guess the battery's fine but the laptop itself just died. If i can't get it fixed mum won't buy me a new one and i'll just have to deal with it.

The charger for my ibook just decided to die, It has not worked like it should lately because it's beginning to break around the area where it connects to the mac.
Anyways.. when it died i noticed a tiny bit of smoke coming from either the charger or the ibook. Will things be ok again if i just buy a new charger or is the thing inside the computer fried?

Yes, this actually happened to me.
My wife's powerbook and my iBook died Friday. I believe the Powerbook's HD crashed. As for the iBook:
Its a 1.2 ghz PowerPC g4 with 768 Ram. For some reason, the computer runs all day when its stable and on my desk. Once I move it, the screen will go blank and its obvious the computer is on. But the screen is a black with everything locked up. When I power down, let it sit and start it up, it works again, only until you move it. You can imagine how frustrating this is. Its completely updated to the latest version of 10.4.
Onto the Powerbook:
I heard some clicking. It sounded like a hard drive problem. I turned it on, it went right to a black screen which looks very similar to a DOS command screen. It says "Computer's Name Powerbook" or something like that on a command line. It just stalls at this screen.
My concern is this..are both computers dead? I'm in summer session and NEED a computer. So I have to act fast. What can I do?

My 23' Cinema Display died after 5.5 years of use. I was at the Apple store wanting to buy the new 24" LED display only to be told that it does not work with my 2008 Mac Pro. This totally pisses me off considering I spent 1/2 hour waiting for a staff to attend to me, and after numerous rounds of checking with the Genius, to be told that it will not work. At this point, I am very upset with Apple and their silly display port strategy. I am wondering what are my options? I have no desire to throw $2k on a 30" and I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion?

the screen went blank today, and connecting an external display wouldn't work. guessing it is the nvidia issue, and will be bringing it to the apple store first thing tomorrow. for now, there are some files i'd like to retrieve from the laptop. any idea how to login using keyboard shortcuts? if i can just enter my password, i should be able to access my files through network using my user credentials.

I have an original 24" aluminum 2.4GHz and it has been acting very strangely lately, and would not boot yesterday. Luckily I had a clone and booted from that, and on bootup I got the message that the internal disk could not be repaired and to backup and format the disk as soon as possible. However, trying to partition the disk gave "could not unmount"; does "erase disk" do a format?. All of the data appears to be on the disk and accessible, but read only, so it makes me wonder if the hard disk is really bad or if this is some other error. I am going today to buy another external disk so that I can have a clone of my clone (now boot) disk just in case. If the internal disk is bad then it is probably easier just to use an external and forget about the internal; I looked at the teardowns on ifixit and it looks like a very time consuming (but not necessarily difficult) process to replace the disk.

I have a 2008 17" Macbook Pro A1261. The other day I was working on battery life and noticed it was about to drain, so I plugged in my adapter. The adapter was not lighting up and I assumed that it had just stopped working. My Macbook is completely dead at this point. I bought another adapter (the newer L shaped ones) and when I plug it in the light comes on green but does not change colour to amber. When I try to power my mac on it does not come on with the battery in or removed.Â
I have tried an SMC reset, holding shift, etc. and nothing has worked thus far. My issue is that how can my macbook all of a sudden just "die" when it was working PERFECTLY fine before the battery drained? I assumed buying another adapter would fix the issue.
Could this simply be because my macbook does not yet have the firmware installed for the new L shaped adapter? If so what steps can I take to install the firmware? I know it is not the magsafe adapter because I have tried two others with no luck.Â

I have a 2007 MBP that had the video card recall (unbeknownst to me until after the fact, might I add). Last year, the video card went out without warning, and Apple says the only thing they can do is replace the Logic Board, but it definitely will not be covered under the extended recall warranty because the issue happened outside of the warranty date. Anyway, all of my iTunes library on that machine is lost I suppose. I didn't have it synced to my phone at the time due to space issues, so I don't have a copy of the library anywhere except in a Time Machine backup. I don't want to restore this new MBA with the entire backup, only the iTunes library. Is it possible? Or can I just re-download the songs since this new iTunes account is set up in the same Apple ID?

I just replaced the screen a my mbp. It booted up, it loaded, it ran for about 1 minute then died. Efforts to resuscitate it have failed. Nothing happens when the power button is pressed, no fans, no drives, Nothing. The battery is freshly charged. I have tried the take the battery out and unplug it, press the power button for 5 seconds, Nothing.

I just received my MBP back from AppleCare. Its about 1 year, 3 months old. The display died, and they replaced part# 605-1211. It states on the Service Details: Parts Used: 605-1211 SCV, PCBA, MLB, 2.2GHZ I take it MLB stands for Main Logic Board? What does SCV and PCBA mean? Also, the repair center scratched the bottom of my MBP.

I have a first gen Mac Pro - late 2006 I think - and one of the processors died, making it one hell of a paper weight. The authorized Mac tech has told me he has to order the entire logic board with processors b/c you can't just replace the processors. Googling tells me otherwise.
Basically it's $700 for the parts - is this the route I have to go? Is that a good price? Can I upgrade processors at this point?

I have the first gen aluminum iMac and I think my optical drive is pretty much dead. It makes this horrible scratching noise whenever I put a disc in and it'll try to read for half a minute before spitting it back out. Sometimes it even freezes the computer. Anyway, I'm just planning on getting an external USB DVD burner. Does anyone know if I can boot off the USB DVD drive?

My G4 finally died, no big deal, I have a pretty recent back up. It simply does nothing when I try to start it, browsing the forums indicates it may be a switch issue, I tried resetting the PRAM. Anyway, I was hankering for a new one anyway. Is there a guide out there to pull the HD to access as an external on the new Imac I plan on purchasing tomorrow? I probably need an external HD kit, but would it be worth it? There are probably some photos and music I added since my last backup.

I came home and found an eMac on my back porch, came from my moms friend apparently. so i plugged it in and turned it on and i was playing on it for a while but safari would just repeatedly crash after loading the home page, so i restarted it and it seemed to fix the problem, me and my friend then took the casing off and replaced the cd drive because it was jammed. it started up just fine after that but after the next restart the screen seemed to be "shaking". it was jumping left to right. so i powered it off and started it up again. this time it did the same thing but it was more vigorous and the screen was flashing from normal to a dark purple tint. then it went really dark purple, the screen shut off, then the whole computer shut itself off. now only after leaving it unplugged for at least 30 seconds the first or second push of the power button will "twitch" the fan and the CRT sounds like its trying to come on, but i only get the CRT sound and the fan maybe doing at most a quarter turn before it stops. the only changes made was a new cd drive and a second RAM card. i tried it by pulling out the added ram card and still nothing. then tried with the cd drive IDE cable removed and still nothing.

After 4 years of brave use, the internal HD on my Macbook Pro has died. I'm now looking for a new one to install it myself. It's a first generation Macbook Pro (1.83Ghz - A1150). From a first google search I found this option a pretty decent one: [URL:...] Any feedback on this particular item? Is the site reliable? Also, regarding the installation of the drive itsef: I've seen some guides on how to install it and they seem a little hard to accomplish. My experience with this kind of procedure so far is related to installing ram, which seems to be really easier. Is this something that a non-experienced user can install or shall I think twice before doing such adventures myself?
