I have a macbook and been updating the OS via DVDs over the years to 10.6 currently. Recently, the hard drive died and I cannot find the DVD. I cannot load 10.5 on a new drive either.

After 4 years of brave use, the internal HD on my Macbook Pro has died. I'm now looking for a new one to install it myself. It's a first generation Macbook Pro (1.83Ghz - A1150). From a first google search I found this option a pretty decent one: [URL:...] Any feedback on this particular item? Is the site reliable? Also, regarding the installation of the drive itsef: I've seen some guides on how to install it and they seem a little hard to accomplish. My experience with this kind of procedure so far is related to installing ram, which seems to be really easier. Is this something that a non-experienced user can install or shall I think twice before doing such adventures myself?

On Christmas Eve my 6 month old MBP 13" hard drive packed up - got the apple logo and nothing else on boot up. Apple Care phone support couldn't fix so had to send it off for repair (due back this week). I know there are more important things in life, but to have spent a month's wage on a computer and to be let down like this was really disappointing. My last backup was a month ago, so everything since has been lost, and I was without a computer for two weeks. Is this a common fault? What bugged me most was that at no stage did anyone from Apple offer any glimpse of an apology for the floored (and very expensive equipment). I switched from Dell to this and love the computer, and had heard a lot about Apple's amazing customer service. Not what I've experienced.

My macbook froze and when I restarted I can hear an usual clicking noise and I only get a white screen with a grey folder icon and white question mark inside. Fortunately, I use super dooper to create a bootable clone of my hard drive as a back up. When I attach this and hold down the apple key I boot straight into the clone and the computer runs fine from the external hard drive. If I go to disk utility my computer can not locate the internal hard drive, nor if I go t sysyem prefs-startup disk. Should I assume its dead or could it be a connection problem. I don't have applecare so I'm willing to buy a new hard drive and swap it myself. However, this is making the assumption the hard drive is the culprit. Can anyone else diagnose this problem from the desrcitpion before I shell out on a new hard drive?

Over a year ago I replaced my stock drive with a WD scorpio black drive 320gb over a year ago. Do I need to swap out my WD for the original HD? I have a recent time machine back up of my data, but I'm more concerned about someone denying warranty service because I swapped out my drive. What have you guys been doing when bringing your machine in for service? Does it matter that my original drive has not been updated for over a year?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an original 24" aluminum 2.4GHz and it has been acting very strangely lately, and would not boot yesterday. Luckily I had a clone and booted from that, and on bootup I got the message that the internal disk could not be repaired and to backup and format the disk as soon as possible. However, trying to partition the disk gave "could not unmount"; does "erase disk" do a format?. All of the data appears to be on the disk and accessible, but read only, so it makes me wonder if the hard disk is really bad or if this is some other error. I am going today to buy another external disk so that I can have a clone of my clone (now boot) disk just in case. If the internal disk is bad then it is probably easier just to use an external and forget about the internal; I looked at the teardowns on ifixit and it looks like a very time consuming (but not necessarily difficult) process to replace the disk.

About a half hour into it, my battery died and when I rebooted the computer from sleep mode, Time Machine said that the back-up had failed. I deleted the initial back-up in the 'Time Machine Back-Ups' folder, but it still says that I have 40GB less on my external hard drive than I actually do. My external hard drive is 300GB, so I should have 170GB left, but I only have 130GB.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just booted into Windows and saw that there were some Windows Updates available and it asked me to reboot the computer however it failed to boot into Windows. So I restarted and tried to boot into OS X instead, but that didn't work either.
So I put in the OS X install DVD and checked out Disk Utility. Turned out that all my partitions where screwed up. There were 3 partitions listed as Windows_ldm, with incorrect sizes (I had 4 partitions before).
Long story short: I'm now reinstalling OS X and I lost everything I had on the drive, I think. I'll try some restore software once I've gotten OS X installed.
A little pissed right now... How the heck can Windows F up the entire drive?
I have a 17 inch MBP running Lion and Windows 7 with a boot camp partition. My mac side has 500GB of space, and my windows 7 partition has 250GB. Recently I shrunk my disk space on the windows 7 partition by going to Control Panel->searching "partition" and shrinking it, so now my boot camp partition has 132GB. However, I thought that space was going to be moved to my Mac OS X partition, but it didn't. Where is that memory space? It can't be flat out lost, can it? I also tried expanding it back but I can't click that option. I really do not want to lose those 118gigs. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but I really need it.

I previously had a Windows 7 Boot Camp partition of roughly 50GB on my 256GB MacBook Air. I removed this partition after Wind'ohs driving me crazy after a while. However, now my Mac partition is only 200GB, and I'm not able to increase its size. Also, my Recovery HD shows up in permanently in Finder and Disk Utility.I now need to (sadly...) reinstall Windows, but Boot Camp won't partition my drive, giving me the error: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition". What's going on with my partitions? The Recovery HD seems to be causing the problem, but I don't understand why I can't use the 50GB of space that is empty.

I've just bought a new 500gb HDD, and 4gb of RAM for my late '08 MacBook. However, when I started to look for my Leopard install disc, I couldn't find it. So, I was wondering... The old HDD is running Snow Leopard, and is still in the computer. My friend has a MBP, which came with the Snow Leopard DVD. Would it be possible for me to back up the old HDD with Time Machine, install the new HDD, insert his Snow Leopard DVD, format the drive with Disc Utility, and then restore from Time Machine (with all the drivers/etc) installed?
The only thing I'm worried about is, I replaced the old HDD because it had some error - ivalid node structure - or something. The drive still works, but would the problem affect anything/be carried over? I'm not so concerned with keeping the files, I just want to have all the drivers/etc installed on my mac, and I couldn't think of another way. Woul this be possible, or is there an easier way?

Unfortunately, the iTunes application cannot now locate my iTunes library. I create a lot of slideshows on Aperture and use music from iTunes on the audio tracks. The titles on the audio tracks are now inaudible and are preceded by a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside.

I have lost all my data from my harts drive. The laptop is under warranty. I have been told that they have replaced my hard drive but could not get any data off the old one. I shut down the computer, and opened up screenflow and exited it. However the 30 gigs is still missing. I got an error saying out of space while I was recording a webcam and now the 30 gigs is gone. I only have 5 gigs of hd space left on my computer when it should be closer to 35 gigs left. I ran cleanmymac but that didn't find the missing hard-drive space.

It makes this horrible scratching noise whenever I put a disc in and it'll try to read for half a minute before spitting it back out. Sometimes it even freezes the computer. I have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?

Recently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

Notes. Failed HDD ASD Test.  A new hard drive was installed in September of 2011 after the previous hard drive failed. Having worked well until now the system seems to give the same problems as it had previously. I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue as others have pointed out. Â
I have been told by the technician my only option is to replace the entire hard drive again for the second time with a new one. However to my understanding a ASD test is very specific and this my not be necessary? Further I am attempting a final backup just in case. I don't have to take it in where I could just back it up myself without the system shutting down.

View 3 Replies View RelatedToday I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?
