Hardware :: Power Supply Has Died - 22" Cinema Display
Sep 2, 2010
I was given a 1999 model. The power supply has died. What are my options? Should I even bother? Its in great shape otherwise. Can I get a 3rd party supply? How do I check this to see for sure that it is bad?

My 23' Cinema Display died after 5.5 years of use. I was at the Apple store wanting to buy the new 24" LED display only to be told that it does not work with my 2008 Mac Pro. This totally pisses me off considering I spent 1/2 hour waiting for a staff to attend to me, and after numerous rounds of checking with the Genius, to be told that it will not work. At this point, I am very upset with Apple and their silly display port strategy. I am wondering what are my options? I have no desire to throw $2k on a 30" and I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion?

So, I think my PM G4 finally died. I had been using it as a media annex (not center) in my living room since my 22" Apple Cinema Display still works fine. Now I'm stuck with a 22" monitor that can't be connected to anything. I've been looking into what can be done. Based on an Apple Support Document, there is a M8661LL/A part called "Apple DVI to ADC Adapter" that I think will do the trick. If I get it, I should be able to hook my PowerBook G4 up to it, right? If so, the next task is to find the sucker. searching online for the part number didn't yield much, but I did find a nearly identical product number, the M8661LL/B on Amazon for $90 (yikes!!). The only difference is the suffix letter. But I don't know enough about this to really know if it'd work.

I have a PowerMac G5 with the first motherboard that is out of order, and another PowerMac
G5 Late 2005
with 2x2.0GHZ
Mounting the powersupply from the 2004 on the 2005 is the powersuply compatible or not?
EDIT: I looked on Mactracker and compared the two:
Max Watts in the first is 604W and 450W on the late 2005.
I want to put a powersuply from a G5 2004 (604W ) on a G5 2005 that had a 450W powersuply is this possible ?

I had a bad power surge (USB hub that was plugged into the back of the display had the wrong power cord plugged in... very stupid mistake I know!!) take out my 23" Cinema Display. The display shows no sign of life (no power light, etc) and the brick has been tested and is OK. My local service place says that they will have to send the display back to Apple which means a minimum of $400 for repair so I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar issue that they resolved successfully? The service place suggested that Apple would replace the logic board but is there any way to test to see if this is the main issue? I have seen logic boards sold separately online but would be hesitant to buy it without know that this would fix this issue.

As the title says, I need a new monitor for my old G5 as the old monitor for it went bust. Apple does not make the old displays that came with the unit anymore and the only available monitor is the new LED ones ? but they all come with mini display ports

My 2*1.8Mhz G5 tower (second version) shutdown two day ago and refuses to turn up again. I have absolutely no sign of life, not even the external white led or the internal red one. I'm trying to figure out whether it is the power supply of the start button which cause the problem.
Is it possible to test a G5 power supply like an ATX power supply, by connecting two pins which would make the fans start ?

I have a G5 dual (PowerMac7,2) with a Radeon 9600 pro card running an HD cinema display (clear plastic) and want to connect a second smaller 20" Cinema Display with the same type of plug - I think I need a DVI to ADC adapter - is this the case?

So my dad is going to get one of the new LED displays soon, since his old aluminum one is out of warranty and needs a new power cord (I guess several years of rubbing against the corner of the desk has made it begin to fray - I haven't seen it yet, though, so I don't know how bad it is). Anyways, he says if I can fix it, it's mine. So I was just wondering how hard it is to replace the cord? This is the one that comes directly out of the back of the display and plugs into the power supply.

I made this a new topic because I think it is important enough to do so. Probably most of those that originally complained about this have moved on to the new MacPro but I am sure there are still enough G5 owners out there that still have concerns about this topic.
A clean install of Leopard eliminates the infamous power supply beeping
Its amazing, my G5 is like a new machine; no more of the annoying power supply beep; although, I learned to live with it after a while and didn't even notice it. However, the silence is now very noticeable.

I hav" a "late 2004" G5 2.0 dual processor. To upgrade graphics card, I find many require a power supply splitter. Do I have a molex 4-pin connector? I can't see the location inside the box.

G5 dual 2.0, 2.5Gb

Anyone know where I can buy an extra AC cable for the MagSafe 85W power supply that came with my late 08 MBP? I'd like an extra cable and I'm not interested in ponying up the dough for the entire power supply. I checked the Apple Store and Macmall, but haven't found anything as of yet.

I was watching a movie, went to research something the movie inspired me about and I noticed that CPU1 was showing 75% load and CPU2 was showing 0% load and by the CPU graphs had been for about a minute. About 10 seconds later the computer locked up and I was forced to hold the power button to shut it down. I restarted and It's been running normal for the last half hour. Is this something I should look into or maybe just a software crash?

My Acomdata twin drive 2TB died today. It won't power up. I think the drives are okay, but not for sure because it won't power up. I have all my ripped movies on it! What can I do? I was thinking maybe I can buy another one (same model) and plug those two drives in the new one.

It has no doubt come to the attention of many that the Radeon 4870 requires two PCIe six-pin power taps off of the motherboard, which is exactly how many allots. Say we wanted to use a GeForce 8800GT and a 4870 at the same time, which would require a total of three PCIe six-pin power taps. What I've read on the forums here indicates that powering them would be possible, but what ways would work?
As far as I can see, I've got two options:
1) Split one of the 6-pin power taps with a Y-splitter, and use the resulting two taps for one card and the other tap for the other card.
2) Use one of the ODD 4-pin molex power taps, convert it to a 6-pin tap, run it down to the card. But I'm running two optical drives; would it be possible to split one of those power taps into two, then run one out converted to a 6-pin and into the card?
I don't know nearly enough about the motherboards and power sources to know which way would work - if any - and if there is any risk involved. I'm running an early '08 mac pro, but I'm curious if this would work in other models as well. Anybody know enough about the hardware to say?

i'm in desperate need of an APC backup power supply for my mac pro and acd. the old backup i've got (APC ES350) is not sufficient to power the mac pro and acd. i purchased the ES350 for my powerbook almost 7 years ago.
anyway, every time i have a power failure (it happens quite often), my entire system shuts down. which APC should i buy? i want to ensure that everything still runs for a good while so i can save everything before powering down completely.

There has been plenty of discussions in the past re: CPU, HDD and RAM temperature, but what about the power supply on the Mac Pro?
My 08' MP reports 70 degree Celsius while the 09' MP reports 35 degree Celsius, while both machines are reporting an Ambient temperature of 27 degree. Why such a discrepancy?
How about your machine?

the screen went blank today, and connecting an external display wouldn't work. guessing it is the nvidia issue, and will be bringing it to the apple store first thing tomorrow. for now, there are some files i'd like to retrieve from the laptop. any idea how to login using keyboard shortcuts? if i can just enter my password, i should be able to access my files through network using my user credentials.

I am actually trying to decide if to get the old 30" cinema display or not.I'm a graphic designer and my fear is that apple will never make a matte display...Here in Italy it's still sold in the apple store. I have the unibody macbook pro, and so I've been reading through reviews now for a week ... my biggest concern is the dual-link dvi adapter... I still see posts (August or September 2010) with people experiencing issues, even with the firmware 1.3!I wanted to ask you people if I should go for it or dig the 27 inch even though it's glossy... I have a few people in the office (also graphic designers) working on iMacs and got used to the glossy.

The power supply fan in my 2010 3.2 quad just went beserk. Spinning at 2950 rpm. I suht down and restarted using the four finger solute (command-option-p-r) and it seems normal now.
What could have caused it to spin full speed? Maybe I should buy apple care . . .

I was wondering if someone could tell me what power supply is used in the current oct/quad core mac pro. Also in the Power Mac G5 and early versions of the mac pro. I am thinking of buying a Power Mac or early Mac Pro second hand and will upgrade the GPU myself and just want to know what PSU (watts) they have.

I just received my MBP back from AppleCare. Its about 1 year, 3 months old. The display died, and they replaced part# 605-1211. It states on the Service Details: Parts Used: 605-1211 SCV, PCBA, MLB, 2.2GHZ I take it MLB stands for Main Logic Board? What does SCV and PCBA mean? Also, the repair center scratched the bottom of my MBP.
