PowerPC :: IBook G4 Just Died?
Jan 2, 2011Yesterday I was on facebook when my ibook g4 went black and turned off. There wasn't any beeping/flashing or anything but it won't turn on. When I press the little button on the battery 5 yellow lights light up so I guess the battery's fine but the laptop itself just died. If i can't get it fixed mum won't buy me a new one and i'll just have to deal with it.

Nov 7, 2006The charger for my ibook just decided to die, It has not worked like it should lately because it's beginning to break around the area where it connects to the mac.
Anyways.. when it died i noticed a tiny bit of smoke coming from either the charger or the ibook. Will things be ok again if i just buy a new charger or is the thing inside the computer fried?

Jul 6, 2008Yes, this actually happened to me.
My wife's powerbook and my iBook died Friday. I believe the Powerbook's HD crashed. As for the iBook:
Its a 1.2 ghz PowerPC g4 with 768 Ram. For some reason, the computer runs all day when its stable and on my desk. Once I move it, the screen will go blank and its obvious the computer is on. But the screen is a black with everything locked up. When I power down, let it sit and start it up, it works again, only until you move it. You can imagine how frustrating this is. Its completely updated to the latest version of 10.4.
Onto the Powerbook:
I heard some clicking. It sounded like a hard drive problem. I turned it on, it went right to a black screen which looks very similar to a DOS command screen. It says "Computer's Name Powerbook" or something like that on a command line. It just stalls at this screen.
My concern is this..are both computers dead? I'm in summer session and NEED a computer. So I have to act fast. What can I do?

Feb 6, 2010I have and old iBook 14" G4 that will not boot. I'm trying to transfer files and apps to a MBP. I've pulled the HD and have it connected to my MBP using an external HD adapter. I tried using Migration Assistant to move the data but the only choice I have is to move the profile and not the rest of the data. Does anyone have a suggestion for a workaround?

May 13, 2010My G4 finally died, no big deal, I have a pretty recent back up. It simply does nothing when I try to start it, browsing the forums indicates it may be a switch issue, I tried resetting the PRAM. Anyway, I was hankering for a new one anyway. Is there a guide out there to pull the HD to access as an external on the new Imac I plan on purchasing tomorrow? I probably need an external HD kit, but would it be worth it? There are probably some photos and music I added since my last backup.

PowerPC :: IBook Display Stopped Working / Boot IBook Via Target Disk Mode?
Aug 13, 2010I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.

Oct 20, 2006My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.

How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?

Apr 19, 2009I just bought a parts ibook from ebay, but I managed to fix it, except there was no hard drive. I currently have a 6 GB HD in it with OS X.3.9 on it, but I want tiger. I have the tiger family pack, so I have a license for it. It only has a CD-ROM drive, so I am wondering if I can buy a 40 GB HD, and clone the one from my G4 onto it.

Jul 20, 2006So, I'll spare you guys the details, haha, but I am stuck trying to decide between getting an iMac Intel or a MacBook Pro for my home use computer. What would be the advantages of one over the other? I just really love the fact that a MacBook Pro would be portable yet powerful. And yes, I have this iBook for portability to school and such, but if I want to do extensive work on the couch, I could bring a MBP vs. an iMac. What do you all think? Are too laptops redundant?

PowerPC :: How Quad G5 Slow Than Intel Core 2 Duo
Jun 26, 2009I have always been interested in getting a G5, ever since they came out. I might be able to nag a Quad G5 for very cheap, but I have a question. I know that an Intel Core 2 Duo is faster than a G5, but how is it faster than the Quad? What exactly makes the Intel faster than the G5? I am looking at the Apple specs of the Quad and to me, it looks like a really solid computer, especially for 2005.
