What is the difference between a normal folder and a Smart Folder?

I would like to create a Smart folder that only has applications & utilities in a sub-folder.
This will be similar to the default applications folder that shows in the dock, but without all the extra files & folders - just a list of applications.
I can do this by esily by just having a smart folder of applications showing only type=application.
However, I would still like to have utilities in a sub-folder.
If thats not possible, then it would be OK to have 2 seperate smart folders, 1 for apps excluding utilities & 1 for utilities only.
Is there some way in the smart folder options i can exclude a sub directory?
Can I set a smart folder to search only a specific folder? When I'm editing it the only options it gives are the entire mac or my home folder.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently created a smart folder.
I have tons of Boy Scout files all over the place and wanted to identify them at anytime.
I figured out how to create the folder but I can't create a file name it without .savedSearch being part of the folder name. Aarrggh!!
No matter what I do I cannot remove the .savedSeach from the end of the name. If I right click for Rename the folder, only the characters BEFORE .savedSearch are highlighted for change. If I right click and choose Get Info and select hide extension, no change.
I've seen other online tutorials for the Smart Folder function in Lion and none of them have their folder name appended.

I recently installed OS X Lion. In my users/name folder I had a folder I named "Fonts Unused" that was right under my actual Fonts folder, where I put different styles in that I wasn't using... to save memory. I put the styles in the normal Fonts folder as needed. Since Lion, those folders are all GONE! I'm talking hundreds of great fonts I'd collected over the years.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt is my first time to use my own create Smart Folder. I use movie, but it wont show .mkv file, so i wonder is there a way to make a Smart Folder that only show .mkv file? I have many .mkv and .mka scatter inside my HDD. i been using Vuze a lot to get music video. How to set up a Smart Folder that only display .mkv and .mka file?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been working on a lot of projects lately, and I've noticed that my files are getting scattered all over my HDD. I'm just not thinking about organization right now, I'm thinking about getting the projects done as quickly as possible. I have found the Smart Folder interesting because of this recently. My question is how can I tag my Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Cinema 4D, After Effects, JPEGs, PNGs, Final Cut, and any other file type to show up in the Smart Folder for the same project? This way I'll just be able to open the smart folder and bang, everything for the project is in that folder. Less worrying about organization, more focusing on work!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't figure this out. I'm trying to use smart folders to search for images within a certain folder and the sub-folders it contains.
The problem is, I can't figure out how to limit the search locations. The only options it provides are to search "this mac" or "(username)".
I've tried to use 'location' (set to match the folder name), but this brings up zero results.
Some instructions found by googling said to first use spotlight to select the folder I'd like to confine the search to before making the smart folders, but this doesn't work either.
I would like to know whether it is possible to change the smart folders preferences in what to search by default. What I mean is in the "window" spotlight, when you search on it, by default is searches on "This mac" and on "Content", my question is whether this is changeable. I hope you understand what I was talking about, if not please ask.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've lost the 'Touched Today' menu item from Finder. It's a 'smart' folder, I know, but I'm not sure exactly how it was set up. Also, if you're an expert on these 'smart' folders, why do I sometimes find today's items at the bottom of the list in the 'unknown date' section? Is there a set of useful 'smart' folders somewhere?

After installing Lion, I can no longer move program icons from my applications folder to a sub folder. When I do, it makes a copy and leave the original in the applications folder. When I then try to delete the icon in the applications folder it tells me it's required by the OS and won't let me delete. I'm forced to keep certan applications such as Time Machine and Stickies in the application folder.

I must have done something to my installation of OS X. When I go to create a new folder, it automatically creates the folder with the name "untitled folder". The problem is, the name isn't selected. Normally, when you create a new folder, you can just type the name immediately. For me, I have to create the new folder, then click on the name to select the text and then type it. Also, when I do go to type in the new name, the text "untitled folder" doesn't disappear. I just type over it.

I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

I've made a Smart Folder to have one place to look for any bills I've paid in the last 40 days, with the following parameters:
- Search within a folder within my Home folder called "Accounts & Services"
- Name begins with "PD 2" (all my paid bills are labeled like "PD 2012-02-01 AT&T," for example)
- Last modified date is within last 40 days
The folder worked when I created it, and whenever I opened it for a day or so afterwards.
But a month later when I open the Smart Folder, the latest bills aren't there.
When I "Show Search Criteria," I see the "Search within" has been changed to a circular reference — it SEARCHES WITHIN THE SMART FOLDER ITSELF!
The practical upshot of which is that it finds only the files that were found at the time the Smart Folder was created, and does not find anything newer because it's looking in the wrong place.
I'm hoping someone has a remedy for this, but I don't have high hopes considering the "Mac Quick Tips" podcasts from 2009 in which Smart Folders are demonstrated show this problem in the demo without realizing it.

It appears that the Library folder that is in the Home Folder (e.g./Users/Home/Liberary)has been made invisible in OS 10.7.x. However I have seen it because after converting samples Logic showed me the folder and its contents. I would very much like to move the samples from their present location in this folder on the startup disk to the EXS 24 samples folder on the external RAID array that is dedicated to this purpose - - but I don't know how to make the Library folder visible.

I'm a longtime PC user who just got a macbook. I copied all my picture files to my macbook and opened up iPhoto. I used the "Import to Library" option to load all my pictures. I noticed that iPhoto copied all my photos to a Photo Library file under the Pictures folder.
Why does iPhoto make copies of the pictures and store them in a separate "file"? This makes it confusing because I have all the pictures that I originally copied but then when I'm in iPhoto, the program is actually accessing the pictures from this separate location.
- Is iPhoto not able to just read files from a normal folder structure?
- How do I manage/organize individual picture files if I'm not within iPhoto?
- How do I burn picture files to a CD/DVD if I can't see the individual pictures when not in iPhoto?
I've been struggling to move my data (photos / music etc) from my old G5 imac to my new imac (lion).Had iphoto all sorted (copied the files from external HD to Pictures folder. But now when I click on 'photos' it opens terminal (!!??)*I can see the files within but only if I CTRL click and choose 'open package'.I really don't understand. I just opened iphoto and it says I have to 'upgrade' again.I did just attempt to open the original iphoto library which is still on the connected hard drive but I didn't upgrade and don't know why that would affect the duplicate library on my new imac?

I just updated my MacBook to Lion, and I used to have a folder when using Leopard called "Library." I can't find it anymore. The only way to get to it is to open Xcode 4, make a Cocoa application, build it, then right-click the target, then click "Show in finder. This is what the library folder looks like after I do that:
I can still click the folder and it will show me its contents, but once I leave the home folder, the folder dissappears, and I can't find it:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed last night the 1TB WD Scorpio Blue without a problem in a 2010 MBP 13", but seem to be having some issues now. Im showing the drive is shown w/red text and failing the SMART status in the disk utility. It showed verified when I installed it last night and reinstalled OS X, but now this. I have also been getting some beachballs, but does seem to be running fine now. Is this a sign of just a bad drive, or is it normal for a non-apple drive to fail the smart status check?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've come across a strange behaviour of Finder when copying a folder over another with the same name. I'm using 10.4.11.
Say I have a folder named "Test" and it contains "File1" and "File2" and I copy it over another folder named "Test", which contains "File3" and "File4".
After copying I would expect folder "Test" to contain all four files, but it doesn't! It will only contain the two that I copied over, the original two will be deleted.
Is there any way to have finder replace files of the same name when copying and retain all other files in the destination folder?

/Test/File3, File4After:
/Test/File1, File2Desired:
/Test/File1, File2, File3, File4
