OS X :: How To Make An Image Of Hard Drive

Jul 31, 2009

I'm new to OS X and I'm wondering if there is a way to make an image of my hard drive that I can store somewhere. That way when if I ever need to reinstall OS X if my HD dies or something, I can just load the image that I have saved. I've done this with a PC before using Acronis and Ghost but I'm not sure how to do this for a mac..

PowerPC :: Make Second Hard Drive As New Primary Hard Drive?

Apr 19, 2010

i just installed a new 2nd, (750 gb) hard drive into my g5 because my first 250gb is nearly full. I'm trying to launch logic but the file is way to big. It wont let me install this program from my new, second hard drive because the message i get is that it supposed to launch from the primary or running hard drive. Can anyone tell me how i can make my second hard drive my new primary hard drive? IMac PPC :: Make Hard Drive Into An External Hard Drive

Mar 1, 2012

I've had a lot of problems with my iMac G5 power supply and since I have newer computers I've decided to get rid of this computer.

I want to save the hard drive and put it in a case, then use it as an external drive on my other Macs.

What sort of case do I need to shop for? Should I look for SATA or what exactly is the proper nomenclature.

Is USB 2 the preferred choice, or Firewire, or what? Is there a USB 3? I use a mid-2010 27 inch iMac with the intel processor, and I needed to buy an adapter to use my older Firewire external drive. Is Firewire a dodo?

I want to make the 2 internal hard drives i have appear as one so i can still install and use things that say "must have mac OS installed on this drive to use" or whatever.

i've heard of people using RAID to join them, but i want details on how i could do this.

OS X :: Making An Image Of A Hard Drive?

Apr 8, 2009

i got a lenovo s10 (windows xp) and i want to make an image of the hard drive using my mac. I have no idea if this is even possible. i vaguely recall someone once telling me that if you connect any computer via firewire to a mac that you could take an image of the hd on that computer. I realize that the s10 doesn't even have firewire, but i was wondering if this was true or not.

OS X :: Hard Drive Image Tool Not Working?

Jun 29, 2009

New 13" MBP, 250 MB stock dirve, set it up with software and configured everything, about 200 MB still free. Before I swap it out for a 500 GB and add my media files I thought I'd create an image of it using the Hard Disk tool.

- Logged into home NAS drive on the network using Connect To Server, opened Mac Hard Disk Utility, couldn't create image because the Hard Drive was in use.

- Restarted using OS DVD instead of HD, but now there is no Connect To Server pull-down option to be able to log into NAS drive on network. I can see the NAS through AFP when I go to Save As, but that's only as a guest, Read Only.

- I plugged in my 32 GB flash drive, tried to save image there, got an error message that it can't create because file is too large.

- Unplugged flash drive, plugged in 320 GB external USB drive, couldn't write to it because it was still NTFS from using it with my windows machine.

- Used the HD utility to erase the drive as FAT so it will work on both. Was able to create a folder on the drive so I know it's now writable.

Tried to create the image, it looked like it was working for a while, woke up this morning and checked, it says it can't create the image because the file is too large.

It can't fit 40 GB of data onto an empty 320 GB drive? Did Apple hire Windows programmers to create this utility?

OS X :: Hard Drive Partition / Disk Image

Nov 17, 2009

I want to partition my hard drive so I can run BootCamp, and my PowerBook is giving me the following message: The Disk Cannot be Partitioned because Some Files Cannot be Moved. So I'm assuming I need to format the whole thing and then partition with BootCamp. Totally open to other ideas, but, assuming I move forward with that, is the best was to save user settings, current Applications, data stored on the drive, etc. to create a disk image on an external drive? I've done that, but I'm sort of unclear on what I do with the disk image after I've wiped the drive and partitioned it up.

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Spins And Super Drive Make Noise - No Boot Up

Jan 7, 2010

My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.

OS X :: Making Boot Image Using External Hard Drive?

Jul 15, 2009

I want to know, is there any specific way possible I can set up my external hard drive so that when I plug it in, it mounts as an image file? So say I have a file "Image.DMG" on my desktop, I want to make it so that my external hard drive "becomes" Image.DMG, so when I plug it in, that's what it mounts as. I would like to do this because I want to make a boot image using my external hard drive.

OS X :: Can Make A Bootable External Hard Drive

Aug 16, 2009

I was installing a software update on my mother's Intel iMac. While installing, the iMac told me that there was a problem and to contact the software manufacturer. When I went to reboot, it would not. All I get is the universal sign for stop (circle with a 45 degree angle line through it). My mother has no backups whatsoever. She needs her information. I am in need of a safe way to retrieve her information.I have tried the basic help from Apple's site--nothing worked. A friend told me that I might be able to boot the computer from a bootable external hard drive and pull the information off that way.

It sounds like a fan but isn't... obviously. Right hand side of track pad, and covering it, in fact just touching it dampens it to barely audible. Is that normal or has something gone a bit weird? A constant fan noise, which isn't the fan is now there permanently.
