OS X V10.7 Lion :: Where To Preview "Signatures" Live
May 7, 2012
I created a bunch of signatures on my Air and instead of doing them all over on the iMac I would like to physically move them from the Air to the iMac, except I can't figure out where they live.Â

I've been having a lot of fun with Preview's signature scanner, and was wondering if it's at all possible to make this kind of signature a default signature in Mail.

Preview 5.5.1 running on a new MacBook Air. I created a couple of signatures and was using them fine for a couple of weeks. Suddenly the saved sigs are no longer available, and new ones are not being saved. I click 'accept' in the create new signature popup, then the popup dissappears and the sig is not saved.Â

My issue is with Preview. The annotate feature used to work fine, but now all of a sudden it cannot decrypt my signature (or anything taken with the iSight camera for that matter). I am running 10.7.3 on a 15'' mid 2010 MacBook Pro.

I manage a host of e-mail accounts, and I have times when I use the same signature for different business accounts. I'm looking for an easy way to take all of my signatures and apply them to all of my e-mail accounts. Is there a simple way of doing that or do I need to take each signature and individually drag it to each e-mail address?Â

Mail no longer adds a signature to a new email after years of working satisfactorily. When I create a new email the default signature does not appear. The Signature button shows 'None.'When I click the button and select 'Edit Signatures' the normal list shows up and I can select the desired signature and the 'Chose Signature' button has the desired signature. I then close the edit signatures window (clicking the red button) although no save dialogue shows up. Then click to start a new email and still no signature and the Signature button has reverted to None again. If I go to Preferences and select the Signatures panel, the 'All Signatures' is alreday highlighted (not my normal business sub group) and the 'Choose Signature' list at the bottom of the panel has reverted to None.

I try to synchronize my Mail signatures on an iMac, a MacBook Pro, both with MacOS X Lion 10.7.3 installed, and an iPhone 4 with iOS 5.1. I have iCloud configured with my Apple ID on the 3 devices. Is there a way to achieve this or must I do it manually?

• The answer is "no", Unsanity haxies are unusable with 10.7.xÂ
• Unsanity isn't showing signs of life and, even if they revive, it may be impossible for a third party to implement haxies in 10.7+Â
• Apple is showing no signs of providing these functions built-in.Â
• Some people --including me-- are very frustrated by the lack of some functions formerly provided by these haxies.Â
I'm going to concentrate on the most significant issue for me and for at least some of the people on the above-referenced thread: Windowshading. How can we live without windowshading in 10.7 and beyond?  Windowshading, long ago, was built in to the Mac OS.  I liked having many, sometimes dozens of files open, easily identifiable, easily restored to full size, arranged on the desktop, generally approximating my workflow, without taking up more than a thin horizontal strip of the desktop for each.  I liked being able to arrange these on the desktop as required by my workflow, especially when things are evolving.Â
Since Apple does continue to support windowshading in one 10.7 app --Stickies-- it is clear that this function still has some validity.  Should this give us windowshading-wanters hope?Â
Probably not. I'm guessing that Apple Human Interface designers made a special exception for Stickies, as this app has doesn't save any visible files.  My guess is that the HI folks feel strongly (VERY strongly) that any kind of desktop workflow-representation should be done with the file icons themselves, on the desktop or in folders. I'm guessing they see the windowshaded representations as bad compromises. I've also seen some evidence that Apple is going in the direction of reducing the distinction between "open" files and prospectively open ones. (D'oh! I wish I'd recorded some links to the articles describing this.) Â
Well, all in all, it seems we're not going to get windowshading. Juggling lots of open files all at once? Organizing according to workflow? What are the current options?  To start: we can shove open windows partly off to the side. That's good for at most 2 or three files per screen edge, left, right, and bottom (with some interference from the Dock) and isn't necessarily so helpful as left and right-shoved files are likely difficult to identify as their titles fall off-screen. Â
Shrinking to the dock? Yeah, that works -- but in my view only for a very limited number of files.    What about using the solution the HI folks seem to be pushing for, organizing the file icons on the desktop or inside folders?  Credit where credit is due: for image files in folders, in cases in which the file icon is a representation of the image, with Finder View-->Show View Options-->Show icon preview enabled, the HI folks have provided a brilliant solution: just use the icon size slider at lower right as necessary. For most images I've worked with, the icon preview can easily be made big enough to recognize and sort each image. None of the image files need be open. Cool. Â
For me this applies less well to non-image files.  Text: I'm imagining sorting hundreds of short files each with a brief bit of text inside (e.g. quotes) all formatted at 9 point. I don't think this will work so well: for me, such text isn't readable even at maximum icon magnification.  I simply don't have enough experience with miscellaneous files that don't fit in these categories. Do "minor" 3rd party apps provide icon preview images? (Full disclosure: just now is the first time I've even tried this with non-image files. D'oh!) Another approach that works for me is to use Mission Control and multiple Desktops/Workspaces. In general, this gives me access to many more open files in workflow-related groups.  In my opinion, Mission Control still needs some improvements, and I understand it doesn't work for everyone. Is there a way to not have it automatically put your signature in email replies by default? I only use signatures when composing new messages and not when replying to emails. I understand you can select "none" from the drop down box manually but is there a setting for this so I don't have to do it each time?

I've created several signatures in Apple Mail Preferences to be used randomly and to appear beneath the text or image in an outgoing email. I've left the box empty next to "Place signature above quoted text." Process works OK with text, however, when sending a photo, the signature continually appears above the image. Is there some way to have the signature always appear at the end of the email when sending images or photos?

I have several email domains all managed as aliases by gmail (e.g, me@aaa.com and me@bbb.com). Mac Mail appears to allow me only one signature per account. So when I set up Mac mail with multiple email addresses in the address field (me@aaa.com,me@bbb.com) it separates them into "smart" mailboxes nicely, but those mailboxes cannot be associated with a signature as far as I can tell. it is a very common requirement, since many people use google to host multiple domains.

While I was creating a new signature, Mail locked up on me. After doing a Force Quit, I found that half of my signatures are blank. I'm running Time Machine, but haven't been able to find the location in my directory, so I don't know where to look for when I go back into my backups.Â
In three and a half years with my Macbook, this is the first time I've lost anything.Â

In Windows XP/Vista, if you are navigating in a folder containing pictures, and you click any picture, it opens up Windows built in preview program. Much like OSX. However, in Windows, you can click "Next/Previous" within that program to quickly flip through those photos. Why do the up & down arrows in OSX not work? I still prefer my iMac to any PC I have owned, but this one little thing bugs me to no end. Is there a setting I can change somewhere to make that work like in Windows?

I'm sure I changed some setting somewhere, but this is a bit annoying. Before buying a song in Amazon MP3, to preview, I click the little play button - it used to play in the browser... now it plays it in iTunes. Anyone know what the issue might be? I'm forced then to remove the link it adds to my iTunes library after every preview.
