OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Live Without Window-shading
Apr 28, 2012
• The answer is "no", Unsanity haxies are unusable with 10.7.xÂ
• Unsanity isn't showing signs of life and, even if they revive, it may be impossible for a third party to implement haxies in 10.7+Â
• Apple is showing no signs of providing these functions built-in.Â
• Some people --including me-- are very frustrated by the lack of some functions formerly provided by these haxies.Â
I'm going to concentrate on the most significant issue for me and for at least some of the people on the above-referenced thread: Windowshading. How can we live without windowshading in 10.7 and beyond?  Windowshading, long ago, was built in to the Mac OS.  I liked having many, sometimes dozens of files open, easily identifiable, easily restored to full size, arranged on the desktop, generally approximating my workflow, without taking up more than a thin horizontal strip of the desktop for each.  I liked being able to arrange these on the desktop as required by my workflow, especially when things are evolving.Â
Since Apple does continue to support windowshading in one 10.7 app --Stickies-- it is clear that this function still has some validity.  Should this give us windowshading-wanters hope?Â
Probably not. I'm guessing that Apple Human Interface designers made a special exception for Stickies, as this app has doesn't save any visible files.  My guess is that the HI folks feel strongly (VERY strongly) that any kind of desktop workflow-representation should be done with the file icons themselves, on the desktop or in folders. I'm guessing they see the windowshaded representations as bad compromises. I've also seen some evidence that Apple is going in the direction of reducing the distinction between "open" files and prospectively open ones. (D'oh! I wish I'd recorded some links to the articles describing this.) Â
Well, all in all, it seems we're not going to get windowshading. Juggling lots of open files all at once? Organizing according to workflow? What are the current options?  To start: we can shove open windows partly off to the side. That's good for at most 2 or three files per screen edge, left, right, and bottom (with some interference from the Dock) and isn't necessarily so helpful as left and right-shoved files are likely difficult to identify as their titles fall off-screen. Â
Shrinking to the dock? Yeah, that works -- but in my view only for a very limited number of files.    What about using the solution the HI folks seem to be pushing for, organizing the file icons on the desktop or inside folders?  Credit where credit is due: for image files in folders, in cases in which the file icon is a representation of the image, with Finder View-->Show View Options-->Show icon preview enabled, the HI folks have provided a brilliant solution: just use the icon size slider at lower right as necessary. For most images I've worked with, the icon preview can easily be made big enough to recognize and sort each image. None of the image files need be open. Cool. Â
For me this applies less well to non-image files.  Text: I'm imagining sorting hundreds of short files each with a brief bit of text inside (e.g. quotes) all formatted at 9 point. I don't think this will work so well: for me, such text isn't readable even at maximum icon magnification.  I simply don't have enough experience with miscellaneous files that don't fit in these categories. Do "minor" 3rd party apps provide icon preview images? (Full disclosure: just now is the first time I've even tried this with non-image files. D'oh!) Another approach that works for me is to use Mission Control and multiple Desktops/Workspaces. In general, this gives me access to many more open files in workflow-related groups.  In my opinion, Mission Control still needs some improvements, and I understand it doesn't work for everyone. So, my photo booth booth effects are not working. They were working perfectly fine before, but now comic book, color pencil and pop art aren't the same. Any figure that its photographing looks black and comes out black. Theres no shading.

Has anyone ever come across this weird shading before? I've only just noticed it on my display, and while it is not noticeable when loads of windows are open or when there is a complex photo, it does show up when the background is plain like this. It doesn't appear to be a backlight problem, and I cannot see that it would be a pixel problem.

I have a Mac Mini running 10.7.3 that I made the mistake of unchecking the show input menu in login window. Now I can't log in at all. I have tried to delete the "com.apple.loginitems.plist" using screen sharing, Lion in all its wisdom tells me I don't have permission.Â
I then tried to create a start up disk on one of my 2TB disks, somehow the system wasn't installed, just all the included apps. I then tried reinstalling lion on the Mac Mini, after over an hour it restarted with the same blank screen. Now when I go to the App Store Lion is no longer available to me.Â

When I open preview the window never appears. The Preview menu is present. The four-finger swipe down will show me all the files I have opened previously. But when I select one, nothing happens. Every now and again, I can get a document to open but generally I give up. This has been going on for a while. I've tried menu file>open , option-click - file open with in finder, I've tried pdf documents etc. The other thing that has been bugging me is the inability to close files. When I do actually get a preview window to display, the side bar includes a variety of files I have opened previously. Actually, I think it has kept every last file I have ever opened in preview....disconcerting actually.

When I click on the Trash in the Dock, an empty window appears with the Title "Window". I've not viewed the Trash recently, so I don't know how long this has been going on. I've done a Repair Permissions a couple times, but with no benefit. Any thoughts? I intentionally put files into the Trash and can see the files via the command line when looking in the ~/.Trash folder. Besides the lack of files, the window title is obviously wrong.

I have previously used the GRAB utility to take a snapshot of an open Safari windiw, and the snapshot included the entire windiw contents. When I opened the snapshot in Preview, I could scroll up and down and view the entire contents of the original Safari windiw. Then, I tried it again a few hours later on a different Safari window, but I then got only the part of the windiw that was visible in the browser at the time that I GRABbed the window (i.e., when I took the snapshot). What do I need to do to get the entire windiw?

I am running Lion Version 10.7.3 and use Firefox most of the time. When I want to download video content I used to go to the Window tab, hit activity and find the file. I would then copy it and go back to the window tab a click on download. I updated Safari to 5.1.3 and no longer have the download option visible.

I'm using an iMac Core i7 running 10.7.3 and I wanted to access my Application support folder (in user/Library), I couldn't find it. It seems my user Library has become invisible, but I can't 'see' it from the finder, nor can I access its contents. I know it's there since I tried to make a new folder called, "Library" and the system told me 'there is already one by that name...' Also if I select 'Open' from another program, I can clearly see it, but only from the 'Open' window.Â
Is this a known issue with Lion 10.7.3? And does anyone know how to resolve this?Â

The application I am in, whether it Mail, Safari, anything really, even as I type this question will suddenly and very often go grey, like you have clicked on the desktop, you then click back to what you are working on and its fine, but this can happen several times in a minute, or then waits a few minutes, but when the window goes the light grey the menu still tells you at the top of the screen you are open in that particular application. its like the window is going to sleep until you click on it again and resume..Â

I've got a very annoying issue with Mail 5.2 (1257). I customized the main application window so that it would only take a small amount of screen space. My problem now, is that every time I close Mail and open it again, it looks like much larger. So I have to rescale the window every time I open Mail, which is quite frustrating. How to force Mail to keep the same window size?
