I am having a problem where my mail App is not searching the entire body of the message any more. I installed Lion soon after it was released, and I believe that it has been working up until recently.Â
If I do a search, it won't search the message body, and gives me no option to search for "Message contains" (just "People" and "Subjects"). If search for subject "foo" and then click on the "Subject" pull down menu, it shows "Subject" and "Entire Message", but "Entire Message" is greyed out.Â
I've done a lot of web searching and most people with similar problems had problems with Spotlight. If I do a Spotlight search, it does find all of the mail messages correctly. Its just the Mail app that won't let me search.Â
I haven't tried re-indexing spotlight yet because spotlight seems to be working okay. Note that all of my mail accounts are "POP" accounts with the mail stored locally on my machine.Â

I'm migrating the admin side of my life to my iMac. I am using Mac mail for my mai, this includes a Gmail IMAP account and a POP3 account for my meandering ISP. The IMAP one loads up fine with the IMAP folders there under a sub set of folders for the account. But the POP3 account won't let me create folders within it nor does it have a subset like the Geekwolf one you see below. What do I need to do to get it to have folders, I need to be able to sort incoming mail, but at the moment, I can't.My ISP does have an IMAP setting, but I don't want to have the mail sat about on a server.Â

Since some time my search functions in Mail and Calendar aren't working properly. I can find my mails in the spotlight function from lion itself, but inside the mail program I get no results.
I tried several things:
1. Delete all my accounts on (is IMAP) and redownloaded them from the server.
2. Removed envelope files in Library folder mail
3. Add harddisk to privacy map on spotlight preferences and removed it (saw reindexing from harddisk)
4. Checked terminal with following command: 'sudo mdutil -s /Volumes/*', results:
/Volumes/Backups: Indexing disabled.
/Volumes/Server Data: Indexing enabled.
/: Indexing enabled.
(Backups is external network drive for backups).
(Server Data is external USB drive for data from clients)
(Server Systems is local drive, not shown in terminal ?!?)
Possible causes to problem: Reinstalled server software (and got it working properly this time), Renamed harddisk, installed back-up software named carbon copy cloner, setup VPN.

Just moved to new iMac with OS Lion. The Mail function used to search the body of the email, but now it does not (apparently).[url]More importantly, the search function is not looking at my old emails in separate folders. And apparently it is not looking at emails not received by the new computer either. Thus I have no historic email search function, which is annoying. How can I force Mail to look at and search all the other old email folders?

The search feature in Lion/Mail will not find names or words in the "Subject" category even when I know they exists. I use mail for my business and often need to find old emails from clients..... the new search feature in Lion does not work. How can Apple release a product with such a obvious flaw?  Â
Other problems with mail..... • When I open mail no new mail will appear in my "in box" until I select another mail box like "trash" or "Sent".... then the new mail will appear. • The "Hide Mail" feature is greyed out when mail is open.... there's no way to hide mail. • The scroll down bar on the right side of the window is hidden until you drag the edge of the frame over to reveal it. • Windows are locked and can't be moved. I've been using Apple products from the earliest days in the 1980's and quite frankly have been shocked at some of the things Apple is screwing up these days. From the Final Cut Pro conversion to Final Cut X disaster that has sent thousands of professional editors running to other products, to these seemingly small but irritating flaws with the new software being released before these problems have been addressed. A search feature that does not work?Â

How to best use the Spotlight and or Command+F find/search feature unsion Lion 10.7? Specifically, I am looking to filter the search to "Name Contains". I know if I Com+F, I can apply that filter with a couple more clicks. And Spotlight can initiate the search. The problem with this method is Show All in Finder leaves no way to apply the Name Contains filter unless I go back and edit the results, then I can drop down and select the filter.

Searching for anything in Spotlight returns no results. Trying to re-initiate indexing by setting the hard-drive to "private" and then "non-private" is not allowed. Using mdutil to force recreate an index fails. "No Index."Â

For the last week I find that after sending an email with attachments that it remains in my draft box after sending. The mail shows up in the sent box, but it never get's deleted from the draft box until I resend it. This is happening on both my MBP and iMac. Both machines connect to iCloud for mail.

I have an external drive with a lot of music on it. I recently upgraded to Lion and now the spotlight will not search the disc.
There used to me a spotlight box in the corner of the drive window and now there isn't. The disc is half a tare and it's next to impossible to search manually. It is a Go Flex drive.

Every time I do a spotlight search, intending only to get filenames (that's what it says in greyed out lettering in the search field), the Spotlight results show content as well with the result I have sometimes 1000s of items listed when I just want results containing filenames only. The search results are useless? How do I get Spotlight to search for filenames only? This is how Search used to be in Classic and for a while in OSX.Â

I have a folder full of HTML files I just imported to my MacBook about a week ago. They have been backed up by my Time Capsule. But when I search for keywords in the contents of them, they do not show up. The file names will show up, but none of the contents (which are mainly text). I have tried to force Spotlight to search only the folder that contains the files, but it does not seem to be searching the HTML files.Â
Are HTML file contents excluded from Spotlight searches? I seem to have a number of webpages that come in Spotlight for keyword searches that appear to be the result of searching the file contents. So is there a trick to this? Is there some way I can force Spotlight to index this folder? Just not sure why it seems to search the contents of some HTML files and not others.

how to find the path to a file in a Spotlight search result. In Snow Leopard I would get the path to a file or folder by just holding the mouse over the search result in Spotlight. I don't see that in Lion.

I have just installed 10.4.9 Server on a Mac Mini, I am no expert but I got most of the services running using a book on setting up server.
The problem I have is everyone on the local network can send and recieve mail no problem using IMAP or POP3 accounts and even Webmail works offsite,
But when someone is offsite like at home, they cannot authenticate and connect to the server to send mail, we use Apple mail but have even tried Thunderbird and Outlook on a PC. None will connect.
Currently we are using CRAM-MD5 for mail authentication.

I use an iMac and recently upgraded to Lion OS. Everything was working fine, including Mail.
But the Hard Disk developed some hardware defect and I was forced to replace the hard disk with a new one. The service center added the new harddisk with OS 10.6.8 and now when I connect the old hard disk using USB connection (which is running 10.7) I am unable to find the Mail and Mail downloads folder in the library folder...
Is it because my machine is running on 10.6.8 and the hard disk is having 10.7?

When my computer-based Mac Mail program stopped collecting mail on Sunday (it still sends mail without issue) I researched suggestions on a fix without a success. Today I upgraded to Lion and I'm still unable to collect mail through Mac Mail. I have opened an iCloud account and can access my mail through the web-based program, and can also access my mail through my iPhone. But Mac Mail on my computer won't collect mail. I had assumed that the install would automatically configure my settings. I've tried checking and unchecking SSL and assigned ports 993 and 995; I've changed my account email addresses from [URL] to [URL] (even though I hate [URL]) but nothing seems to work.Â
