I just switched to Mail from Entourage and am setup to Exchange. I just noticed when I search within Mail or through OSX Spotlight it doesn't appear to search within the Attachment in the emails. Is this how it is designed? If so, do I have any options?
View 1 RepliesIs there any Terminal commands that will do this? I use Spotlight all the time - to load documents to loading applications. However, I hate how it makes any DVD's in my drive spin up. I never search DVD's, so turning this off wouldn't be an issue.

When I search for something and I select it, spotlight seems to continue on searching and I have to click the spotlight button again and press ESC to stop it from continuing searching. I want it to stop searching after I've used it, as it spins the hard drive quite fast, which generates noise.

Spotlight continues searching and it will continue to search until I "x-out" of the search field. Is this how spotlight works or can the search be turned off after selected a search result?
View 5 Replies View RelatedYesterday I wanted to search for a desktop picture I downloaded. Naturally, I just pulled up the spotlight menu and typed in the name of the desktop picture and waited, and waited, and waited. It found the dictionary definition, and two applications but, the jpg was just taking FOREVER to show up. I ended up canceling the search and just finding it on my hard drive because I knew right where it was.
I tried re-indexing my drive, but that didn't solve the problem. However, after trying a few things, I found the culprit! I have a Boot Camp partition for Windows 7 (it's for games, don't judge me). Well, I figured out that since Snow Leopard can't write to my Boot Camp partition, it couldn't index it as well. All I had to do was go into System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy and add my Boot Camp partition to the list. Now my Spotlight is lightening fast again. Sweet!
To summarize: Is Spotlight taking forever to search? Add your Boot Camp partition/drive to System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy
Often, when I type a filename in Spotlight, it does not find it, although I am 100% sure the file exists. Is this normal? Can it be corrected?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using MacOSX and Mac Mail. The cub scouts send a weekly newsletter via Scouttrack. When I view this on the Mac, I cannot see any attachments; it's like they are not there at all. When I view it from Outlook on a PC, it doesn't show the little paper clip, but when I open the email, then I can see that the attachments are there.
Is there any way to get the mail application on the Mac to recognize that there are attachments in the email??
Why are my attachments not showing up as attachments when recieved. They are sent from Mail as windows "friendly" - but never the less always show up inlaid in the mail. The recipient then have to ctrl clik on the documents, save them on the harddrive before being able to fx print.

since upgrading to Lion an embedded attachment in a e-mail, jpeg or pdf will cause a recieving outlook to stop displaying the e-mail content before the atachement-icon, no mail content after the icon is displayed anymore. Mail itself shows propper content of the e-mail.Â

Anyone know of a Universal application like Mail Watch? I've used Mail Watch for years but it's a PPC app that doesn't work well with Leopard 10.5.4. Must work with POP accounts since Comcast doesn't have IMAP.
View 7 Replies View RelatedFor years, I used Eudora (Mac) because it was fast and fit the way I needed and wanted to work. Overall, I still think it's the best e-mail program but I switched to Mail for some very specific reasons: I needed to be able to specify specific POP ports for specific e-mail accounts, I wanted to use the Mac OS centralized address book (Eudora's interface with Address Book was kludgy), I had apparently reached the limit on folders within Eudora as it would crash when I tried to add a new folder and restoring to previous preferences would allow me to use Eudora didn't fix the problem with adding a folder, and I wanted to see html e-mails (Mail still doesn't create html e-mails well).Overall, I'm OK with Mail (v. 4.2, Mac OS 10.6.2, MacBook Pro late 2006 Core 2 Duo, 3gb RAM). The thing that I miss the most is Eudora's very robust searching capabilities. There may well be something I've missed with Mail as it seems that the kind of searches that I want to do should be possible in Mail. Here are some examples of the kinds of things I want:
1. Search on multiple criteria. For instance, find all e-mails where "From" contains xxxxx and "Date" is after xx/xx/xx and "Body" contains xxxxxxxx.
2. Boolean searches. For instance, find all e-mails where "From" contains xxxxx or "From" contains yyyyy.
3. Search within the results of a search. For instance, first find all e-mails where "From" contains xxxxx or "From" contains yyyyy, then within those e-mails, find e-mails where "Body" contains zzzzz.
4. Full boolean and/or grep searching (this would go beyond Eudora's capabilities).
Is there a resource, preferably online, for power searching in Mail? If so, where? While doing this kind of searching as native part of Mail would be preferable, I would be satisfied with a plug-in or even a third-party utility that interfaces well with Mail.
I have Apple Lion 10.7.2, I use Apple mail, email accounts set up as IMAP accounts, sync'd with my IMAC and Air.My hosting company, 1and1 allows me to set up folder within IMAP so these are shown in MAIL on both macs. As i deal with each email I file in the relevent folder.However recently I have been finding that when I search MAIL for a particular email it doesnt find them, regardless if they are in the folder or in the main mailbox. Weird. I had this happy today, searching for an email I knew I had received as it had an attachment and had found the corresponding reply in sent. However the email which I had on this occassion stored into one of the these folders could not be located on searching?
Email comes into mailbox, I action or reply, I want to store it away from the main inbox so I only see ones that I need to deal with - however I must be able to see it on my macbook air, IPad so I didnt create a folder in MAIL, as this doesnt reciprocate on the other macs?

Successfully moved mail to another partition ~ however not getting Spotlight (or Mail) to index or search email since the move.Tried adding the folder to Spotlight privacy settings ~ then removing but no luck.Tried contacting Apple however moving mail from Libraries is not 'supported' so no love there. how to get Spotlight to search mail residing on another partition? I recently got a new iMac and backed up from Time Machine. Everything is fine apart from Apple Mail, which no longer searches my Gmail archive. The archive is still there, all 33,000 messages, but just not searchable.Â
So, for example, if I got an email from a guy called George a month ago, when I search 'George' nothing comes up. I can manually go to the Archive and find the email but obviously that takes a lot of time.Â
Is this an Apple issue or a Gmail issue? Given that I run the same account on my laptop and it's all working fine, plus it was working fine before, I would assume it;s an Apple fault.

I use an iMac with Mac Mail 3.6 (OSX 10.5.8) For some reason when i now attache a file to my mac emails - jpg, tiff, picture etc - it reduces it to approx 50-k (typically from 5mb) I havent changed anything or done anything Due to my occupation this is unacceptable - I need to attach files at their original size.

How do I reinstall it? I have all the disks and everything...but can I reinstall just one program? Will it still keep all my settings and all that?
i would like to use either automator or applescript to get attachments from certain emails i get in mail that have the subject line that contains "Database Backup" then according to the first part of the subject to save the attachment into a folder with that name.

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I cannot add an attachment to email using Yahoo mail. Every time I select the file, Yahoo mail begins scanning and it then crashes the browser - happens with any browser and any file.
Searching around suggests there are similar problems for some users but not as pervasive.
Why do attachments rec'd on my mac (10.4.11) through aol have to be downloaded before being opened? Then you have to open a zip file or open a variety of folders before you get to the item sent. Other computers allow you to just click on the attachment and the file opens immediately.
View 6 Replies View RelatedUntil have till now just used fileflow to send pictures, cause when attaching them to mail - it just seems to stick into the mail- and hard to get out for pc users - And if they manage - the filesize seems to have been scaled down.
pdf - ai - psd etc works perfect as attachments. but jpg - no !
also when i try to show the icon - i get claims from my recipients...
Does anyone have a smart advice for me to get full scale jpgs as full readable attachements, no matter who recieves it ?
I have a problem with Mail.app.
I configured my Gmail using IMAP on mail.app. And i downloaded ALL my mails and attachments, meaning it cached all attachments and emails. It used up 4 GB of my data. I am on a capped bandwidth of 5 GB per month. I thought everything was perfect and suddenly last week....I checked my cap again, and i used 3 gb in 2 days. I checked and it was mail.app downloading my mails again and caching attachments all over again.
Why is this happening, i am scared to use mail.app again, because u never know when it will start caching all my attachments again and i will use up my 4gb in 2 days.
When I save a screen shot and email it... it comes out on the other end as a small image (thumbnail?). There has got to be something I'm missing in the setup or preferences... but why aren't my attachments full size?

My daughter in college has a MacBook Pro Intel running 10.5.x and uses the college mail program (site).
Every attachment that I send her that as a jpg, she says downloads to her desk top as a .acs ( I believe) which she can't open to view. If she goes to a windows computer with the same college e-mail site she can view them.
Question: what can be done to send/receive these so they can be viewed as jps's on her computer? Would send them as windows friendly attachments help?
I'm guessing that the e-mail site is probably set up for more windows friendly than Mac friendly.
