I'm having trouble with my Apple Mail program. I have a number of e-mail accounts (some with Optimum online, a g-mail, yahoo, etc.) Apple Mail has no problem at all reading and downloading any mail from any of the services. My problem is with Optimum Mail (Optonline.net). Mail refuses to send anything through that set-up. I've been on the phone for hours with Optimum and the settings are all correct. I've tried connecting directly to the cable modem and mail gets sent. This would make me believe that it is the Apple Airport Extreme router that is at fault. I've tried restarting it, re-initializing it and setting it up again and the problem continues. All my Optimum mail is picked up and can be read but it will not send anything through Optimum. It asks if I want to send it through another server (like g-mail or yahoo) and if I pick yes the mail sends.
It happens on all my computers a G-3 and pre Intel iMac G-5 on Tiger and my Macbook on Leopard.
Anyone else hear of this problem? Both Apple support and Optimum online say they have never heard of it. Talking for hours with their tech departments have found no solutions.

After many years of good service my Apple Mail has suddenly become very picky. For a week or two new messages have been dispatched to my outbox to "try later" thence to "whoosh" away when it felt like it. Lately it has become downright nasty, refusing to "send" at all. Connection check tells me "cannot connect to SMTP". A call to my ISP verified all settings were correct. Tried changing password -nothing worked. ISP tells me fault is with Apple Mail. Incoming mail is O.K.

I am running a Powerbook with OS 10.5.8 with mail 3.6. For no obvious reason, mail quit sending messages. It receives but does not send. I have reinstalled mail from the installation disc but it didn't resolve the problem. I doubt it was a factor but when the send function quit I was on a very slow dial-up connection. During this time when I was lucky enough to get connected, the connection would drop after a minute or two or it might last for several minutes. This happened repeatedly while I was trying to download received mail and a program.

Just installed Snow two days ago. Runs great, so far. As of today, when I try to send mail from Mac Mail, something strange happens every so often.
I get a message saying it can't send the message because the SMTP options have not been set. They are in fact set, and Mail has been functioning normally until installing Snow.
Anyone having this problem, and how did you fix? All my server settings are in place so I'm not sure what else to change.

All of a sudden Mail won't send - it's freezing, and then finally asks for my password. Once I input the password (which hasn't changed), it sends. It's a gmail acct set up as IMAP.

Maybe I'm a dumbass and missed something obvious, but in Leopard Mail, in the New Message window, there's a drop-down menu where you can choose which email to send the message from. But in Snow Leopard, the drop-down menu's not there, and I can't figure out how to choose which email address I want the message to be sent from. The only way I could do it is to click a message sent to that email address, then click New Message, the message will then send from that email address.

I use Thunderbird for e-mail and it's setup as the default mail client. Recently, as in the past month maybe, when sending calendar invites, Mail opens. I don't want that to happen. Why doesn't calendar use the defined, default mail app to send invites ? I'm 99% sure it used to do this too.

Bit of a strange one to describe this, but I tried to send a message to a lot of recipients and it wouldn't send (I used the wrong server). Now I have an error message that falls off the bottom of the screen and I can't clear it.

Is there anyway to log out of Apple mail? I have it set up to prompt for a password upon opening. However, my e-mail show up before the prompt and stays in the background after it appears. I share a computer and would like to keep my e-mail private without having to switch system accounts.

I use Apple Mail as a client for my Gmail account instead of Gmail's web interface. There is one thing the web interface provides that I'm not sure how to set up within Apple Mail. In the web interface under Settings --> Accounts, the first section is called "Send mail as:" and allows you to send mail from the interface that uses another email address in the From header. I have it set so that when I receive a message that was sent to one of these other addresses (they all forward to my Gmail address), replies will automatically be sent with that address as the From header. How do I set up this functionality within Apple Mail without creating a separate account/inbox for the other accounts? I am not checking mail directly from the others, just want to be able to send as them.

i was using Apple mail 3.0 successfully on my old MBP which was running Leopard. I used POP to access and use my gmail account. I upgraded to a newer MBP but now am running snow leopard and apple mail 4.0 Unfortunately the migration assistant failed to bring across my data to the new computer and had to do it manually. I was unsuccessful in getting Mail 4.0 to set up a POP account for gmail as I had done with the older operating system's version of Mail.
I was successful with setting up IMAP (which i like less for specific reasons that I wont go into). However, even with following gmail's on line instructions, the sending of mails is temperamental. Sometimes emails get send, but almost always they sit in the "outbox" for minutes or hours, and it seems to be quite random as to when the emails are successfully sent. I cannot understand this. Usually the sending fails several times where it gives me the option to "try again" which I usually chose. I have SSL checked and am using port 933. I am using smpt.gmail.com:username@gmail.com has anybody else had similar difficulties and were they able to overcome them

I have a problem with Apple Mail and I need someone to help me. I use Snow Leopard and want to use Apple Mail instead of Entourage. But, everyone uses windows around me and when I send email to them, they get my email as plain text. Here is my question... Even I made changing form plain text to rich text in preferences, my mails go still as plain text. Should I do something with Terminal? How can I fix it? Preferences richt text/plain text switch doesnt work.

Not sure if it is me or this is just the way Apple Mail works. Logic would assume that if you select a message in Apple Mail and that message is highlighted, not opened, and you click the From column so you can sort by that column Apple Mail would make sure that, when it is sorted, the highlighted message would still be in your view. I can get this to work sometimes and other times it does not, so it is starting to bother me. Is there something that I am missing...some step...or is this just the way it works.

my email server was recently hacked and the hosting company I use has sorted out a new server to use with the option of using SSL for incoming and outgoing mail.
Inputing the details of the standard incoming and outgoing mail servers is fine - I'm just trying to work out how I can input the SSL options?
Using Apple Mail 4.5 - how do I go about adding the Incoming Mail Server (SSL) (without a port number) and the Outgoing Mail Server (which does have a port number)?

Snow-Leopard 10.6.1 on uMPB with 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HD, 2.8 GHz IC2D, Mail (64-bit) 4.1 (1076) Mail is eating my memory over time and I cannot fix this problem. In long: I have been having trouble with Apples Mail ever since my SL upgrade but now it is getting to become VERY annoying. First, after upgrading, Mail would often hang when quitting (for up for 5 minutes) which would not allow me to shut off my computer. Now, in 10.6.1, when I open Mail, I can sit and watch Mail eat away my RAM. From 20 MB initially, it quickly hits 100 MB RAM then after a couple of hours of leaving it be, I can see that Mail is requiring 2.5-2.6 GB of RAM (Gigabytes!) constantly. At first, I thought this was due to GrowlMail not being compatible with 10.6, but even after updating Growl to 64-bit and reinstalling GrowlMail this memory problem still persists. Actually, after uninstalling Growl and all its applications (including GrowlMail) Mail keeps eating a solid 2.6 GB of my RAM. Continuously. This slows down my 4GB 2.8GHz uMBP and causes long sessions of spinning balls and delayed keyboard/mouse actions. Mail never lets go of the RAM only gets bigger up until 2.73 GB (highest I have seen before I force quit it through Activity Monitor). Once I Force Quit, Mail releases the memory and I am back to my fast mac. I found the following this at [URL] and after removing my RSS feeds from Mail and restarting mail, I am now running perfectly again --- Virtual Memory and RAM both less than 45 MB.

I am unable to retrieve new messages in mail on IMac. Went to mail preferences and checked account info which are the exact settings as of yesterday and matches the same preferences in my other IMac. I have my wifi connection working just can't get mail. What to do next? I did run Main Menu and Repair Disk permissions. Mail is working on my MacPro and other IMac.
