OS X V10.7 Lion :: Migrated Snow Leopard Files To It Now Read-only?

May 24, 2012

Just spent several hours transferring my files using Migration Assistant from an older MacBook Pro (running 10.6.8) to a new one running Lion and find that all of my Microsoft Office files were converted to read-only.  Also, get the following message when I edit and try to save PDF files:  You don’t own the file 'xxxxx.pdf' and don’t have permission to write to it. A pain in the neck, but fixable.  Three questions:  What did I do wrong?  Is there anyway to do a mass conversion from read-only to read/write?

Mac shows a message that says "it cannot open de applications installer because the application PowerPC is not compatible anymore" I have tried to search new drivers on Epson website but they still have the old ones.Is there any way I can scan documents again or I have to change printer. The printer works fine to print documents from any Mac application. OS X :: Scanning After Installing Snow Leopard - Unable To Press Scan Button

Sep 6, 2009

My HP Photosmart 3210 all-in-one wouldn't initialize and sent error messages after I installed Snow Leopard yesterday. I went on the HP support network, which gave me a solution that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, plus in the past I never had to take all the extra steps to scan a photo. The HP support site claims that upgrades for HP Printer devices was included with Snow Leopard. So why can't I just press the scan button like I used to?

Intel Mac :: USB Not Recognized By Snow Leopard?

Jun 7, 2012

I formatted my 8GB USB stick on my Mac Snow Leopard and initially decided to try a '35-Pass Erase' but, after seeing that it would take approximately ten hours to complete this I cancelled it.  I was then presented with:  'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer'. Now when I insert my USB stick the computer does not recognise it apart from in 'Disk Utility' and I am unable to successfully format or partition the drive. I have also attempted to insert the USB in another USB slot on my computer to see if this would make any difference but I was presented with the same problem.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Printers Not Recognized After Installing It?

Jun 5, 2012

We have a MAC Pro Tower with 2 older printers connected to it via ethernet (through our AT&T 2-Wire DSL/Router). We have a Xerox Phaser 6300N & an old Apple LaserWriter 12/640 PS.We have been running Leopard for quite a while with this setup & no problems. When we finally were able to upgrade to Snow Leopard which I installed on Thursday, 5/31/12.Now, our printers are not recognized at all. I've reinstalled & redownloaded the Xerox drivers about 5 different times, tried unplugging the printer from the router & plugging it into the back of the computer directly.  Our speakers also did not work either, which was just a quick fix in the sound setup in Systems Preferences.

I finally called Apple Tech Support -- they had me reset the PRAM, then I was booted up to a Senior Tech guy that upon learning that the printers were connected via ethernet that "Apple could not help me as they are only trained & able to troubleshoot USB connections".

Now, I know that I am not the only one out there that has older printers connected to their MAC, and since the trouble started as soon as I installed Snow Leopard, there must be a solution -- perhaps a setting that was reset to the default when we upgraded or if Snow Leopard is not compatible with ethernet will a ethernet/USB converter do the job? I have even found an article about how to create a driver for the LaserWriter to work with SnowLeopard ... but the printer has to be recognized first.

MacBook Pro :: Das Keyboard Not Recognized Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Apr 23, 2012

I've just got the Das Keyboard Ultimate Model S for my 2009 MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I'm using the USB port to connect the keyboard, and the first time I plugged it in, the computer asked me to hit the first key to the right side of the left Shift key, which is pretty standard whenever a new keyboard is plugged into the Mac. It recognized it as a European ISO standard, which it is.

However since then my Mac no longer recognizes it as that kind of keyboard. When I go into the "Show Keyboard Viewer", the keyboard is recognized as a US Standard layout, and an Apple keyboard as well (meaning it doesn't "see" the numpad). You can see it's a US standard keyboard, as the Enter key is horizontal, and the left Shift key is wider. (the rest of the layout is Danish, which shouldn't matter in this case).

How do I tell my Mac that this isn't the correct keyboard? I've resetted the SMC, PRAM and NVRAM. I've tried to find and delete the file "com.apple.keyboardtype.plist" in my Library -> Preferences folder, but for some reason I don't have that file. I've plugged the keyboard into my iMac, running the same OS, and here the keyboard is recognized correctly, so it's not the keyboard that's faulty.

Hardware :: Wireless Apple Keyboard Not Being Recognized Correctly In Snow Leopard?

Nov 7, 2009

So I've concluded that the reason my wireless keyboard is not registering the correct keystrokes on my Macbook Pro is due to the fact that Snow Leopard sees it as the OLD white wireless keyboard instead of the new aluminum one. Is there any way to ensure that it sees the keyboard as the aluminum one rather than the white one every time I hook it up?

My main concern is that the function keys don't do the correct thing. I've tried remapping them (but can't control the volume ones) and have tried using the checkbox that requires a push of the fn key. Trouble is, since the white wireless keyboards don't have an fn key, it won't recognize it as such on my aluminum.

how to make the computer see the keyboard correctly?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: First Time Machine Full Backup Over Ethernet Not Recognized Latter Over AirPort

Feb 5, 2012

I have a 3rd Party NAS (Iomega Home Media Network Cloud Edition 2TB) and MacBook with OSX 10.6.8. I did run a first TM full backup over Ethernet (around 240GB) because of the extremely slow transfer speed over WiFi via the AirPort. It went Ok (after several tries and reading here in the forum). Then, I disconnected my MacBook from the wired network, so futures frequently backs-up happen wirelessly, however, it seems that it did not recognize the first full back-up, asked for re-doing it again from scratch and erased my first full-backup-over-Ethernet.

I've seen that the MAC address is used as part of the sparse bundle file name; obviously, there will be a conflict here because Ethernet and AiPort do not have the same MAC address (of course !).I will run a brand new full first backup over Ethernet, but I'd like to know what do I have to do for getting it recognizable for futures backups over AirPort?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: External Drive Mounts But Not Recognized As Time-machine Backup

May 30, 2012

I have a MBP 13" 2009, and had a HDD fail yesterday. I have an external HDD for backups with timemachine (WD 1Tb), with daily backups.I bought a new internal hdd, plugged it in today, and when presented with the install options, I selected recover from backup. There, my drive appears (in yellow), but when pressing continue, I get a message: No system backups found.

I looked around on forums and people suggested that a normal installation should be done followed by migration assistant. When I try using migration assistant and select Time Machine backup, the next page just shows up empty with a rotating thing in the middle.

When I browse the Backups.backupdb folder, everything is there, including my last backup from Saturday. I see that I can recover my files, which obviously is the most important bit, but I would like to restore Applications, settings etc, as to not waste too much time.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Canon "scan To" Button No Longer Working

Jun 17, 2012

I have had a Canon MX700 for a few years now, and have generally been very happy with it - when it works.

One bugbear of mine is that the "Scan to" button on the scanner stops working from time to time. It will work magically for AGES, then.. Pressing the button shows "Set the PC to start scanning" on the printer.

This usually results in me spending hours removing, and re-installing Canon drivers/software, restarting my Mac(s), the Printer, my Wireless, etc, until I eventually get this going again. (Pressing the "Scan to" button results in a list of my Macs to scan to).

When the printer is doing this, scanning from the Mac(s) works no problems - using Canon's Scan software, or Image Capture. Printing works fine also. So, the Printer can clearly communicate to the Mac(s). It just doesn't allow you to initiate the scan from the Printer.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Firewire Port Previously Working Now Not Recognized?

Jul 4, 2012

I understand this particular issue has been discussed at length on this forum and in other places but none of the solutions have yielded any success for me and I see this is often the case for others.  So, I'm posting the question again in hopes that there is an Apple guru out there who has figured this one out.  (All relevant specs below.)

Problem:  Firewire port was working fine for downloading video from a Panasonic PV-GS320 into iMovie 8.0 on an iMac 10.5.8.  Then, suddenly the firewire port was no longer recognized: FireWire Bus: Warning:Unable to list FireWire devices.  Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec The problem cannot be with the camera or cable as I can swap them over to an iBook 10.4 and the camera and firewire download perfectly there. I have run AHT.  Test results show no hardware problems. I've tried all of these

Hardware :: Pioneer External 116d Dvd Burner Not Recognized By Leopard

Nov 24, 2008

I have an external Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-116d burner hooked to my Duo iMac and since I updated the software with software update, Leopard only recognizes it as a Mass Storage Device. Says it's manufacturer is Prolific Technology Inc. So it doesn't recognize any DVD or CD that I put in it, blank or not. I've tried putting it on different USB ports and Firewire even with no success. I was about to reinstall my entire system just to get things back to where they were before, but those same updates solved a different problem I'd been having.

The built-in drive is unreliable after using a game disk that had too much art on it or something, making the drive make noises. Since then the internal just hasn't been the same, hence I purchased the Pioneer external from OWC.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Disk Image .DMG Unable To Mount / Attach - Not Recognized?

Jul 3, 2012

After a fatal mac crash (PPC 10.5) i had no option but to reinstall the OS (10.5), i obviously didnt reformat the drive in the hope that i would be able to recover some if not all of my data. Using various tools i was happily able to recover most of my data successfully, including 3 AES encrypted Disk images of around 30GB in size each.

I didn't hold out much hope for actually recovering the data inside the dmgs, although after some fiddling i was able to recover 2 of them fully after receiving the no mountable file system error, i dont know how i done it but nonetheless i dont appear to have lost any data from those two dmgs whatsoever. Now the third dmg (also about 30GB in size) never gave me the no mountable file system error and instead returns the error: unable to mount: not recognized. Im pretty sure that my data is still there somewhere due to the sheer size of the recovered file, tied with the fact of the success of the recovery of the other 2 disk images. I have read every post i could find on this site and have trawled the web tirelessly looking for a solution to this, but have yet to find anything that even comes close - the closest i have found was a post on this forum where it would appear an apple engineer was able to recover most of the data using some sort of magic.

I am not in a position to pay for professional data recovery and besides i would love to see a solution to this problem appear somewhere on the web. I have tried the usual, rebuilding permissions, mounting on another machine (imac G5), resizing with disk util, repairing with disk warrior, converting to ISO - all which return the same error - not recognized! I have tried every terminal command i have found on the web, although decyphering some of the information is a little out of my remit and my knowledge of HEX is limited. I haven't yet tried Toast, basically because i dont have a copy, but it would be my guess that this would return a similar result. Incidentally when i recovered the original data, there were some small (what appeared to be dmgs) files around only maybe a few Kb each with part of the file names of the original files, i'm guessing these maybe the headers or something like that? although i didn't have to do anything with them to get the other 2 disk images working again.

OS X :: Leopard Upgrade To Snow Leopard ... The Same As The Full Version Of Snow Leopard?

Jun 13, 2009

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.

However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.

My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?

Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?

I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.
