OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Upgrading Original Mac Mini?
Mar 24, 2012
I have one of the first Mac mini's. I upgraded the memory to 80 GB's, the processor is a 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4. I'm getting a new Mac Mini that will work in the iCloud. The software is version 10.5.8, the newest the processor can support. It works well, albeit a little slow at times. I want to give the old mini to my 12 year old grandson, and would like to upgrade the keyboard and mouse to the mac magic mouse and wireless keyboard.
I'm doing an initial back up on Time Machine. Is it O.K. to do an upgrade to Snow Leopard at the same time or do I have to stop the back up? Also, how do I know which files have been backed up?
I was wondering whether any of the Apple Hardware Test images disposable from Apple would actually work with any other products not listed (Like the Power Mac G4, in this case), or whether there, by any chance, is a copy of my included install disk elsewhere? This is regarding my 1.42 Hz G4 Mini, see this for details. The disc contains AHT version 1.0 and its ID is 2Z691-5455-A, however, the backside of the DVD looks like it was lost outside the window, picked up by a wind carrying it to the nearest sea with sharks (some thousands of miles), played with by a shark with very sharp teeth, broken into thousand pieces, run through the animals several phases of gastric secretion, collected into a small chunk of plastic fragments, glued together to make it look like the original DVD once shipped with the computer back in '05.
I got my Mac Mini from my moms friend (for free) so I don't have the disks that came with the computer, but I do have the Snow Leopard upgrade disk and the disks that came with the new MacBook Pro's if that helps. How would I go about doing a clean install on my Mac Mini?
As stated in title I have this PPC Mini that I have upgraded to 1GB RAM, but is getting a little slow (running 10.5.8). Has anyone swapped the hard drive for a larger 320GB 5400 RPM model? Was the swap worth it? The unit is really only for my 10 year old to do basic tasks, but the laginess is becoming an issue.
I have a Mac mini G4, 1.42GHz, 1GB ram, running 10.3.9 I tried to install 10.5.4 from the grey disk that came with my newer iMac but I just get an error saying it cannot be installed. Is this a hardware problem with my Mac mini or a software problem with the disk only being licensed for one computer or something like that?
I have a Mac mini running OSX 10.4.11 that I purchased second-hand. It did not come with the original install discs. I want to give it to my grandson now that I have a new i-Mac, but cannot figure out how to remove myself from the Admin position and substitute him.
I have an opportunity to get a Mini G4 for $200. It is an older version with 256 RAM and a 40gig HD running Tiger. Can I upgrade to 1gb of RAM and a larger HD and then upload Leopard on it or is it even worth it?
Who agrees since they're not or probably will never update the mac mini again they should at least update it with the 'addons' (more like essentials) for free?
I hate how they nickel and dime you with the ram and hd (because they know most people will opt for the upgrades). It's pretty standard for that price now to have at least 2GB of memory!
Either way I'd like to get one not really for real use (with it's current specs) but more like a novelty item...
I have a core duo 1.66 mac mini. I've read a few posts here on the forum and someone even PM'd me a guide/howto for replacing the cpu. I came across a T7400 ES? Is this the same as a regular T7400 or is there something about the 'ES' that will prevent it from working in the mini?
Is it possible to upgrade the mac mini g4 to a intel processor or some other processor thats faster? Or motherboard upgrades? Well i appericate the help, and i hope there is an upgrade
I'm going to be upgrading to a Mac Mini within the next couple of months (from a knackered Windows PC), mainly to use as a media centre, and i am going to be backing up alot of my DVD's to use and play on the Mini itself. I have downloaded the Windows version of Handbrake this morning just to see how good it is and to get a feel for it properly before i start using it on a regular basis on my new Mac Mini. However, when trying to rip a DVD, i get a message saying "File not Found" and then a message about the copyright or something? This happens after scanning the DVD (Snatch, to be specific) and it won't let me rip the DVD.. it's as if it either doesn't recognise it or is being blocked by the copyright on the DVD.
I have Mac OS X version 10.5.8 and would like to upgrade to lion and then to mountain lion in July. How do I inow if I have the system requirements and what is the difference between upgrade and migration
Info: Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.5.8), memory 1GB 1067 MHx DDR3
For the CPU of the new minis, I can choose between 2.0GHz (intel Core 2 Duo P7350) and 2.26GHz (P8400). I wonder if I can replace the CPU myself (now or later) e.g. by the P8700 which runs at 2.53 GHz. I heard that this is impossible. Even upgrading from 2.0GHz to 2.26GHz is said to be impossible. I was told that if I want the 2.26 GHz CPU, I have to decide so before I buy, as it is not possible to upgrade later.
I have an early 2009 Mac mini and the 120GB hard drive is starting to get a little cramped. Especially since I'm now keen to get Windows installed on there as well. So I was hoping to upgrade myself. I've already opened the mini and added memory so I'm confident enough with that. I just need to know what I need to be aware of when upgrading. For example, will ant 2.5" SATA disk do the trick? I was thinking of this one:[URL:...]
I've got two Macs: one Tiger (iLife '06), and one Leopard (iLife '08) and I would like to upgrade both to Snow Leopard. I'm in the UK.I need help finding the best price/capability compromiseI have looked at the prices for doing this and come up with the following options:Most expensive optionBuy the 5-user Mac Box Set (Including OS X Snow Leopard, iLife 09, iWork 09) for 179This way I've got both machines running the latest everything.Next OptionBuy the Single User Leopard box set (including iLife/iWork 09) to upgrade the Mini to Leopard (?108.34) then buy the Snow Leopard family upgrade box to upgrade both machines to Snow Leopard (?39), total ?147.34. This way I have iLife/iWork 09 on the MacMini but not the MacBook.
Cheapest OptionBuy the Single User Leopard disc to upgrade the Mini to Leopard (?68.99) then buy the Snow Leopard family upgrade box to upgrade both machines to Snow Leopard (?39), total ?107.99.
Alright I have a current rev Mini 1.83ghz, and want to upgrade the stock 80gb HD, wondering if this drive will work. [URL]. I want the 7200RPM, but wasn't sure 3.0GB would work on the intel controller, thinking it may only support 1.5GB. Also, when I reinstall leopard, does it allow me to format the drive to HFS+ or how would I do this?
At the moment, I am using the Unibody MacBook Pro with Leopard (OSX 10.5), but I would like to install Snow Leopard. How does it actually work? Do I have to install Snow Leopard over my existing Leopard? And if I want to reinstall Snow Leopard while using it, will I have to install Leopard again in order to be able to install Snow Leopard? The problem is that I heard that Snow Leopard checks whether you have original Leopard installed on your mac in order to progress with the installation. So will I always have to install it over Leopard so that I will need both dvds (Leopard and Snow Leopard) in the future?
I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.
I have got my first mac (imac) so sorry if this is a really simple question. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard but I am having bits of trouble with printing. As I have not yet got much data on my Mac I am thinking of going back to my original installation that came with the imac. I have backed up my data I want keep photos, music etc; onto DVD. When I put the installation disc in what is the best option to pick ? I do appreciate that I will have to re-install photoshop and other apps; I have installed. Will I have to re-configure my internet again? Basically I want to re-install the operating system I am also thinking of buying Superdupper any thoughts on this product.
So there I was with my dock on the right-hand side in 2D mode, and having now switched it to the bottom I realise I switched in some new dock image files back when Leopard came out, and now I've got a funky multicoloured spectrum dock.
All well and good, but I don't think I have any of the original dock image files anywhere. Short of reinstalling Leopard from scratch, is there any way (or utility) to get my dock back to the default Leopard version?
