Mac Mini :: Cannot Install Snow Leopard On 2009 Model
Nov 4, 2009Leopard 10.5.8 runs fine on this 2.26ghz Mac Mini. BUT every time I try to install Snow Leopard, with about ten minutes left in the installation process, I get a kernel panic. The only thing I can think of that is doing this is either 1. I am driving a 30" Cinema Display through a mini dvi to dvi adapter on the Mini -- reducing resolution but still running it fine (I do this with my 12" Powerbook 1.5ghz as well, doing it now as a matter of fact. It makes the picture huge but fine for me at moment) 2. 3rd Party Ram bought at Fry's Patriot 2 x 2GBs ... but passed hardware tests and no problems in 10.5.8. 3. I have not done all the imovie/garageband/idvd/remote desktop/itunes 9 updates in Leopard. I have done all the other updates to 10.5.8 and don't use these apps, so can't see how this is affecting a Snow Leopard update. Any thoughts? It quits and kernel panics during the Snow Leopard update. It was kernel panicking in Leopard, too, when using iPhoto a few weeks ago. Wondering if it is something to do with the Mini Dvi to Dvi adapter (not dual link) to 30" Cinema Display?

Oct 31, 2010I am trying to decide whether to get the 2010 model or the cheaper 2009 model. These are the differences that I've found so far for the base model. For arguments sake, let's say they both have 4gb ram (most people selling them have upgraded to 4gb)
2010: 2.4ghz, longer battery, nvidia 320m
2009: 2.26ghz, (slightly) shorter battery, nvidia 9400m
Having a slightly slower cpu, less battery life (about 7 hours rather than 9) and a slightly weaker gpu don't bother me so much, as I will be mostly using the macbook pro for internet surfing and writing word documents
My question is, are there any other differences? (that would make me go for the 2010 rather than the 2009 model) - maybe differences in the display? shape? something else?

Apr 9, 2009Will there be any performance impact if I mix Apple ram with OWC ram in one of the new Mac Pros? I want 12 gigs total (6x2) and it's about $50 cheaper (with edu discount) to get 4x2 from Apple and 2x2 from OWC rather than 6x1 from Apple that I won't use plus 6x2 from OWC. FWIW, my primary use for the machine is Lightroom which is pretty reliant on memory-bandwidth so I don't want to do this if it'll be an issue.

Sep 23, 2009I would rather not have to sell my MacPro, but for some financial reasons, I may have to. The specs of the machine are in my sig, but if I can get these add ons to work in Windows, I think I can sell my HP HDX instead. Anyway, I know these cards wont work in OS X, but would they work/ fit if I used them in Windows with Bootcamp? [URL:...] Since it's only PCI e x1, it won't work will it? My situation is to get rid of the HP and use my MP as my HTPC/ Work PC, or to sell the MP and my 24" ACD for a new iMac when they come out and then build my own HTPC since I have a New Egg preferred account and could put the money off for a little.

Aug 2, 2010According to Apple's Synthetic Performance Tests, Mac Pro 12-core beats the previous generation Mac Pro 8-core by 1,3 (1,2). Which seems pretty normal.
But by doing quite a simple equation, comparing the power of the new MP 8-cores to the previous generation MP 8-core (based on these ∆ 1,3 / 1,2), the new 8-core system seems to be about 0,87 / 0,8 of the previous one, which is considerably less powerful.

Sep 10, 2010I like to DJ in my spare time and use the macbook for my software program, but using the integrated cam doesnt give a good angle at my mixers. I used the xbox live vision cam with my PC laptop, but I got rid of it and only have the macbook now. Ive tried just plugging it in and I dont know how to access it. I occasionally do live mixes on stickam where you dont get to choose which cam to use. So if I can get the xbox cam to work, how can I temporarily disable the integrated cam?

Jun 27, 2009Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but after searching on these forums I couldn't find a topic already talking about it...
I just received my 15" Macbook Pro ( Mid 2009, the most recent update ), and noticed right away at just how blurry the screen is.
Comparing it to other laptops around me, and my desktops monitors... the text on the Macbook's screen looks blurry compared to them all.
Now Im making it sound like it's horrible, and it's really not... I just expected it to be a lot crisper and sharper.

Aug 2, 2010I've been playing StarCraft II the past couple of days and noticed the fan for the first time since I've gotten my iMac (which was in November). So I touched the top of the screen and it was burning hot. Is this normal? I really haven't heard the fan until playing SCII, so I'm not sure if my iMac has always been hot.

Mar 10, 2009I'm sitting here thinking I made a mistake by being cheap and just upgrading the base model to 2 GB when virtually everyone else is going for 4 GB... I do realize that this is mainly because most people choose to upgrade themselves, and then there's no point in not installing 4 GB. The thing is that I don't think I would benefit at all from having 4 instead of 2 GB of memory, since I won't be doing any "heavy" work on it whatsoever.
I might use Photoshop now and then, but that's about it, and that works just fine on my current MacBook with 2 GB ram (white 2006 model). Also, my memory usage most often shows that I have 1,2 GB of free memory, which isn't even close to "maxing" it. I've been looking for benchmarks comparing these two configurations, but I couldn't find any. I know that it's quite easy to upgrade it yourself later, but I'd rather avoid it...
Mac Mini :: Mac Mini Server 2009 Main Drive Replacement
Jan 9, 2011 One of the drives in our 2009 mac mini server 2009 has died. I have taken apart many minis so have no problem taking it apart to replace, but does anyone know which drive is the primary, "Server HD" drive? Would it be the top drive (first drive you come across during disassembly) or the bottom drive closer to the logic board with the two pads stuck on? Just wondering if anyone knows for sure so I can avoid removing the drive that's still working fine.
Also, to keep the server running in the mean time, I am booting to the second drive which is working fine. Just curious, once the dead primary drive is replaced , can I simply use carbon copy clone to copy back from the 2nd drive, or will I need to install snow leopard server back onto the new drive?

Jun 6, 2010With a sharp fingernail I seem to have damages the internal ribbon cable that connects the audio card in my 2009 Mac Mini, and am looking to source a replacement, preferably in the EU. I'm currently in the UK.The part number is 922-8809.
A Google search reveals a few parts suppliers in Europeland, but they are all charging silly prices for the cable, and US suppliers impose ridiculously high postage charges.

Now that the Seagate 500gb 7200rpm drive is at v.4 it seems the way to go, just want to make sure. The Hitachi TravelStar 7K320 320gb is a cheaper option if its just as good or better for dependability and silent/cool operation. And on reading some reviews of the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500gb 5400 it seems a very good drive too and maybe just as fast as the higher priced and faster spinning Seagate.

Mar 22, 2009I'm need to upgrade my existing Mac, and although if I was wealthy I'd go for a used Mac Pro, or if I was extremely wealthy, a new one, it occurred to me that the new Mac Mini might be an option.
Presumably its 2GHz Core 2 Duo would be significantly faster than my existing Dual 1.25GHz G4 processors, I could spec it either to come with 2 or 4 GB of RAM, and according to this page it can support my existing 23" Cinema Display (1920x1200) with an adaptor, and even a 30" Cinema Display at some point in the future (2560x1600).

Nov 23, 2009I'm going to get a New base model Mac Mini or a refurbished Mac Mini.
Being a broke college student I'm a little confused on what software I should get.
Should I buy MS Office for the Mac or just run it through Window's?
I have a copy of Window's 7 and MS Office small business for pc.
Is that going to be a pain in the butt to do my homework and manage office files on my Mini if I have to run it through Window's on the Mini?I guess I don't understand what to expect. Is it like dual booting a pc, like how I use my pc with Linux and Windows?
Also what do I do with all my documents, pics, mp3's etc.... when I make the switch?Can I put them on a thumb drive and just transfer them over to the Mac or won't that work?I would prefer to keep my music collection in MP3 format, seeing how it's all been painstakingly ripped using" exact audio copy with lame encoding". There's not much but I'm pleased with the results.but my Sansa clip plays "apple" format anyways I think.Or should I "now that I'm switching to a Mac" start changing formats over to itunes default format and encoding techniques.My PC is old and outdated and would like to eventually phase it out completely.

Mar 26, 2012I can not figure out how to connect the power on the cinema display. It looks like it would plug into the back of the mini where the macmini would normally plug the power in. Not sure if I am missing something. I also do not know if I need to plug all 4 connections the video, usb, hdmi, and iguess what is the power plug in or just certain plugs.

Nov 7, 2010I've been given the Blu-ray set of season 1 of the classic 70s sci-fi series Space:1999, but I don't have a BD player. What I am thinking about doing is buying an external BD drive for my Mac mini HTPC, ripping the episodes with MakeMKV and playing them in Plex.
I want to maximise the quality so I don't want to recompress the video in any way. At the risk of asking a really dumb question, will I get reliable playback from a truly "raw" 1080p24 BD rip played off a Firewire 400 drive, or will the data rate be too high?

Mar 25, 2009I just got myself a new Mini, and I bought it maxed out from apple, 2.26, 4GB Ram and 320GB HDD, and when I check the temps in OS X, they are pretty normal, but I don't see the MCP temps with iStat & al. But in Windows, when I run Everest, I get a pretty hot GPU & MCP temps, in the middle 80's. I'll contact Apple tomorrow, but in the meantime, anybody with a Mini comparable to mine can check temps in windows and report back?

Has anyone swapped the hard drive for a larger 320GB 5400 RPM model? Was the swap worth it? The unit is really only for my 10 year old to do basic tasks, but the laginess is becoming an issue.
