Mac Mini :: Free Upgrading?

Nov 4, 2008

Who agrees since they're not or probably will never update the mac mini again they should at least update it with the 'addons' (more like essentials) for free?

I hate how they nickel and dime you with the ram and hd (because they know most people will opt for the upgrades). It's pretty standard for that price now to have at least 2GB of memory!

Either way I'd like to get one not really for real use (with it's current specs) but more like a novelty item...

Mac Mini :: Upgrading 1.42 Ghz PPC?

Oct 18, 2010

As stated in title I have this PPC Mini that I have upgraded to 1GB RAM, but is getting a little slow (running 10.5.8). Has anyone swapped the hard drive for a larger 320GB 5400 RPM model? Was the swap worth it? The unit is really only for my 10 year old to do basic tasks, but the laginess is becoming an issue.

Mac Mini :: Upgrading From OSX 10.3.9 To 10.5.4?

Apr 12, 2012

I have a Mac mini G4, 1.42GHz, 1GB ram, running 10.3.9 I tried to install 10.5.4 from the grey disk that came with my newer iMac but I just get an error saying it cannot be installed. Is this a hardware problem with my Mac mini or a software problem with the disk only being licensed for one computer or something like that?

OS X :: Upgrading To A Mac Mini - Blocked By The Copyright On The DVD?

Apr 19, 2009

I'm going to be upgrading to a Mac Mini within the next couple of months (from a knackered Windows PC), mainly to use as a media centre, and i am going to be backing up alot of my DVD's to use and play on the Mini itself. I have downloaded the Windows version of Handbrake this morning just to see how good it is and to get a feel for it properly before i start using it on a regular basis on my new Mac Mini. However, when trying to rip a DVD, i get a message saying "File not Found" and then a message about the copyright or something? This happens after scanning the DVD (Snatch, to be specific) and it won't let me rip the DVD.. it's as if it either doesn't recognise it or is being blocked by the copyright on the DVD.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Upgrading Original Mac Mini?

Mar 24, 2012

I have one of the first Mac mini's.  I upgraded the memory to 80 GB's, the processor is a 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4.  I'm getting a new Mac Mini that will work in the iCloud. The software is version 10.5.8, the newest the processor can support.  It works well, albeit a little slow at times. I want to give the old mini to my 12 year old grandson, and would like to upgrade the keyboard and mouse to the mac magic mouse and wireless keyboard.

Mac Mini :: Replacing CPU - Upgrading From 2.0GHz To 2.26GHz?

Mar 13, 2009

For the CPU of the new minis, I can choose between 2.0GHz (intel Core 2 Duo P7350) and 2.26GHz (P8400). I wonder if I can replace the CPU myself (now or later) e.g. by the P8700 which runs at 2.53 GHz. I heard that this is impossible. Even upgrading from 2.0GHz to 2.26GHz is said to be impossible. I was told that if I want the 2.26 GHz CPU, I have to decide so before I buy, as it is not possible to upgrade later.

Mac Mini :: Upgrading HDD 120GB - Installing Windows?

Aug 19, 2010

I have an early 2009 Mac mini and the 120GB hard drive is starting to get a little cramped. Especially since I'm now keen to get Windows installed on there as well. So I was hoping to upgrade myself. I've already opened the mini and added memory so I'm confident enough with that. I just need to know what I need to be aware of when upgrading. For example, will ant 2.5" SATA disk do the trick? I was thinking of this one:[URL:...]

Mac Mini :: New MM - Region Free Mod?

Jun 17, 2010

I am considering ordering a Mac Mini from Apple's Hong Kong store which I presume will have DVD region flags set for 3 and 6 which will cover me in China where I am living now. When I moved here, I reflashed the firmware on my Dell business notebooks with a region free firmware. I am wondering if I will be able to make the mini DVD drive region free so I can play my HK and China DVD's as well as my US DVD's?

Also, I will be purchasing a new 15" MBP also from HK and will want to mod that DVD drive as well so hopefully I can get both answers here.

Mac Mini :: Can't Free Up Space?

Jun 30, 2012

I have a Mac Mini 500GB and have 440GB of movies on it. I have deleted the files from the iTunes media folder and have emptied the trash but the storage information still says that my hard disk is almost at capacity with 440GB of movies...all of the files from the iTunes folder are stored elsewhere on an external hard drive and I have iTunes talking to the exernal hard drive so I really want to free up the space on the mac mini.

I dont know what else to do because I cant even find any mv4 files and when I search for files over 1GB, the only thing that comes up is iPhoto.

Mac Mini :: Apple Store Fixed My MM For Free

Aug 14, 2010

So a few months back my old mac mini decided to crap out on me and I was computer-less for those few months. Since my money situation isnt too good right now (unemployed, live at my grandmas and my dad supports me. Im 21 btw) I didnt bother getting it fixed until recently. Keep in mind the computer is out of warranty and I dont have Apple Care. So I eventually took it to the apple store and they said the logic board was fried and possibly the ram. They quoted me at $317 for a new logic board. I told them I'll give it a wait because I cant afford it. So a few weeks later I decide to go back and ask if I can get it done for a cheaper price. They told me they can do it for $217 with just the logic board replaced and if it needs ram they will tell me. They end up calling me telling me to pic it up and that the price is $377. I told them no, they told me they'll do it for 217. She tells me they had to replace the ram as well and thats why the price was higher. So I told her that as long as the computer still works with the old ram just put back the old ram and Ill pay the $217....

So I get a call back today saying I can pick it up. I ask them just to make sure how much the price was. She says no charge. So im of course confused and ask to speak to the person who repaired it. She tells me that since mac mini's are hard to open and shouldnt be opened a bunch of times that they just left it with the new logic board and ram and decided to do it for free given the small hassle I had with them. I couldnt believe it! It was a $377 dollar job and they just let it slide.

OS X :: No Free Space - Erase Free Space Interrupted

Mar 20, 2009

Yesterday I apparently interrupted Disk Utility when it was erasing free space, which was far bigger than the used space on my beloved black Macbook. Apparently the free space, because the program was interrupted, is seen as one honking big file.

This morning, the disk utility tells me that I have zero free space. Verify says I do not need repair. I checked because of all my sudden problems (I am unable to save anything to the laptop, unable to cut-and-paste . . . and unable to erase free space again since there officially isn't any, etc.).

Trash is empty.

I tried (based on advice in another thread) to reboot with the installation disk so as to use its disk utility program, but the installation disk menu offers "install" etc. but not (as far as I can tell) just access to its disk utility.

I plugged in my Timemachine external drive [WD MyBook], but the most recent "save" there has the "restore" button greyed out. That's scary.

I'm willing to do a complete re-install if necessary, but I hope that one of you has a simpler solution that will simply get my free space back.

Mac Mini :: Unable To Get Dual Displays / Using Mini DVI And Mini DisplayPorts

Sep 12, 2010

I have an Early 2009 Mac Mini with Mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort. And I have two 1080p HDTVs. The Mac Mini is capable of dual display, and I've gotten it to work before, so the issue is not the TV or Mac. And I have tried both Mirroring and No Mirroring.

I got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (#5311) and a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter (#4852) both from MonoPrice. And for some reason I can't get the Mac Mini to dual display, it's only one or the other.

Before I had a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male AUDIO to HDMI Female Converting Adapter (#5969) and I got video on both HDTVs, but not audio at the same time b/c one was USB and one was TOSLINK.

I'm not sure why I can't get video on both monitors. Any help?

I need to connect my 09' Mac Mini to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which outputs to my Sony XBR HDTV. I know the mini has both mini-dvi to dvi and mini-dp to dvi or hdmi available via adapters. I was thinking to go with option 1 however I was wondering what is your opinions? Is mini-display port better over mini-dvi or are they the same? Audio will be carried over optical toslink.

Option 1:
Using mini-dvi adapter to dvi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.

Option 2:
Using mini-dp adapter to dvi or hdmi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.
