Mac Mini :: Upgrading 1.42 Ghz PPC?

Oct 18, 2010

As stated in title I have this PPC Mini that I have upgraded to 1GB RAM, but is getting a little slow (running 10.5.8). Has anyone swapped the hard drive for a larger 320GB 5400 RPM model? Was the swap worth it? The unit is really only for my 10 year old to do basic tasks, but the laginess is becoming an issue.

Mac Mini :: Upgrading From OSX 10.3.9 To 10.5.4?

Apr 12, 2012

I have a Mac mini G4, 1.42GHz, 1GB ram, running 10.3.9 I tried to install 10.5.4 from the grey disk that came with my newer iMac but I just get an error saying it cannot be installed. Is this a hardware problem with my Mac mini or a software problem with the disk only being licensed for one computer or something like that?

Mac Mini :: Free Upgrading?

Nov 4, 2008

Who agrees since they're not or probably will never update the mac mini again they should at least update it with the 'addons' (more like essentials) for free?

I hate how they nickel and dime you with the ram and hd (because they know most people will opt for the upgrades). It's pretty standard for that price now to have at least 2GB of memory!

Either way I'd like to get one not really for real use (with it's current specs) but more like a novelty item...

OS X :: Upgrading To A Mac Mini - Blocked By The Copyright On The DVD?

Apr 19, 2009

I'm going to be upgrading to a Mac Mini within the next couple of months (from a knackered Windows PC), mainly to use as a media centre, and i am going to be backing up alot of my DVD's to use and play on the Mini itself. I have downloaded the Windows version of Handbrake this morning just to see how good it is and to get a feel for it properly before i start using it on a regular basis on my new Mac Mini. However, when trying to rip a DVD, i get a message saying "File not Found" and then a message about the copyright or something? This happens after scanning the DVD (Snatch, to be specific) and it won't let me rip the DVD.. it's as if it either doesn't recognise it or is being blocked by the copyright on the DVD.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Upgrading Original Mac Mini?

Mar 24, 2012

I have one of the first Mac mini's.  I upgraded the memory to 80 GB's, the processor is a 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4.  I'm getting a new Mac Mini that will work in the iCloud. The software is version 10.5.8, the newest the processor can support.  It works well, albeit a little slow at times. I want to give the old mini to my 12 year old grandson, and would like to upgrade the keyboard and mouse to the mac magic mouse and wireless keyboard.

Mac Mini :: Replacing CPU - Upgrading From 2.0GHz To 2.26GHz?

Mar 13, 2009

For the CPU of the new minis, I can choose between 2.0GHz (intel Core 2 Duo P7350) and 2.26GHz (P8400). I wonder if I can replace the CPU myself (now or later) e.g. by the P8700 which runs at 2.53 GHz. I heard that this is impossible. Even upgrading from 2.0GHz to 2.26GHz is said to be impossible. I was told that if I want the 2.26 GHz CPU, I have to decide so before I buy, as it is not possible to upgrade later.

I've already opened the mini and added memory so I'm confident enough with that. I just need to know what I need to be aware of when upgrading. For example, will ant 2.5" SATA disk do the trick? Mac Mini :: Unable To Get Dual Displays / Using Mini DVI And Mini DisplayPorts

Sep 12, 2010

I have an Early 2009 Mac Mini with Mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort. And I have two 1080p HDTVs. The Mac Mini is capable of dual display, and I've gotten it to work before, so the issue is not the TV or Mac. And I have tried both Mirroring and No Mirroring.

I got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (#5311) and a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter (#4852) both from MonoPrice. And for some reason I can't get the Mac Mini to dual display, it's only one or the other.

Before I had a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male AUDIO to HDMI Female Converting Adapter (#5969) and I got video on both HDTVs, but not audio at the same time b/c one was USB and one was TOSLINK.

I'm not sure why I can't get video on both monitors. Any help?

Mac Mini :: How To Conncet HDTV Using Mini Display Port Or Mini Dvi?

I need to connect my 09' Mac Mini to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which outputs to my Sony XBR HDTV. I know the mini has both mini-dvi to dvi and mini-dp to dvi or hdmi available via adapters. I was thinking to go with option 1 however I was wondering what is your opinions? Is mini-display port better over mini-dvi or are they the same? Audio will be carried over optical toslink.

Option 1:
Using mini-dvi adapter to dvi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.

Option 2:
Using mini-dp adapter to dvi or hdmi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.

problem is,... i hear people say that you have to have os 10.3 installed before 10.4. is that true?

i just want to buy a full 10.4 upgrade package and do it then and there.

Mac Pro :: RAM Upgrading To More Than 8gb?

Dec 16, 2008

Is there a tool or utility to check to see if adding 8GB of ram to my current 2GB ram will speed up my computer?

I currently have a 3 week old 8-core 2.8 mac pro. Before I had a G5 with 8GB ram and I could open up many of my RAW images from my camera at once without noticing an uber amount of lag time. I noticed once getting the new mac pro with 2GB ram it took longer to load up the images. Now I'd think it would use processor power more than the ram but I could be wrong. I always set photoshop to use the most amount of ram which is around 3GB plus I could run safari and dreamweaver, illustrator and some other apps all at once without wanting to toss my computer out the window for lag. (I have little patience btw)

So I was just talking with someone saying that if I add 8GB of ram its overkill for me to have 10GB ram. Though I also plan on running a virtual machine that will run a couple design apps that are windows only.. plus I use maya... but besides that. If it were 10GB or ram I have and its all to just run my browser, adobe design suite and maybe a couple chat clients it may be over kill but wouldn't I be right in saying that they would all run smooth all at once using 10GB of ram instead of 2? and yes I know its only 32 bit so each can only suck up 3GB ram. Just figured to me I could run many apps and have no issue with my computer with more ram. I found online 2 4GB sticks of ram and I plan on getting them this year so even though im buying them.. just wanted some input.

Mac Pro :: Upgrading/First Gen MP?

Feb 4, 2009

I have the Mac Pro dual core, 2.66GHz. It has the ATI 1900XL.

It's still running strong, however I've become addicted to more monitors and I'm planning on getting a second one however I've been screwed by the discontinuation of the 23" DVI version because that's what I have as a main monitor.

So my choices are 20" or 30" now, or the new one with some adapter that isn't shipping.

So I'd like to get a 30" I think, and put the 23" to the side instead. yes I know there are cheaper monitors but I'm looking for some commonality out there.

However I also have a 19" LCD 1280x1024 I use for 'junk' (non-photography) things like iCal, mail, etc. To hook that + the 23 + the 30 up can that be done without investing in another video card?

Mac Mini :: Good High Resolution LCD Monitor Compatible With 2010 Mini Server?

Jun 23, 2010

The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

Mac Mini :: Mac Mini Server 2009 Main Drive Replacement

Jan 9, 2011

One of the drives in our 2009 mac mini server 2009 has died. I have taken apart many minis so have no problem taking it apart to replace, but does anyone know which drive is the primary, "Server HD" drive? Would it be the top drive (first drive you come across during disassembly) or the bottom drive closer to the logic board with the two pads stuck on? Just wondering if anyone knows for sure so I can avoid removing the drive that's still working fine.

Also, to keep the server running in the mean time, I am booting to the second drive which is working fine. Just curious, once the dead primary drive is replaced , can I simply use carbon copy clone to copy back from the 2nd drive, or will I need to install snow leopard server back onto the new drive?
