OS X :: Need Original Leopard To Install SL?

Oct 21, 2009

At the moment, I am using the Unibody MacBook Pro with Leopard (OSX 10.5), but I would like to install Snow Leopard. How does it actually work? Do I have to install Snow Leopard over my existing Leopard? And if I want to reinstall Snow Leopard while using it, will I have to install Leopard again in order to be able to install Snow Leopard? The problem is that I heard that Snow Leopard checks whether you have original Leopard installed on your mac in order to progress with the installation. So will I always have to install it over Leopard so that I will need both dvds (Leopard and Snow Leopard) in the future?

PowerPC :: Any Way To Wipe Install Without Original Disks

Sep 5, 2010

I have a summer 2005 14" iBook G4 that I'd like to wipe and give to a friend, but I seem to have lost my install disks somewhere in one of my moves in the last 5 years. The Apple Store employee I talked to said I should make an appointment at the Genius Bar and they'll do a wipe and reinstall for me, but I'm not interested in putting much more money into this since I'm giving it to a friend as a favor (hers just died). Any suggestions for how to get a copy of the right OS and all the iLife software, too? It has Tiger, but I could put Leopard on it, if that's easier to get a hold of.

Software :: Ibook Not Booting From Original Install?

Aug 23, 2009

I have an ibook g4 early 2004, my computer had problem with the HD and i had the change ir for a new one. After I installed the new hardware (samsung IDE 160 GB) my mac wont boot from the original installation CD's. It boots up, shows me the apple logo, stays there for a while and then shows me a forbidden sign. I have tried with Disk Warrior and the same thing happens. In a desperate move to see if the disk was correctly installed, i booted up a version of yellow dog linux, and it can recognize the newly installed HD. I have tried booting up the machine, pressing option button to display boot up options, but the machine freezes everytime i do that. I have also tried to run Apple Hardware test but keeps freezing also in the splash screen that shows a little mac with the words "loading...". The disk is recognized by yellow dog, so i dont think is trashed... how can i format the disk and install panther?

Desktops :: Cannot Start IMac Even With Original Install Disks

Oct 29, 2009

I have a 20" Intel based iMac (model A1224) running Snow Leopard. It is just over a year old and only had the original Apple keyboard and mouse plugged into it. Today when I tried to start it I got only a blank gray screen. I tried all the keyboard combo start-up suggestions in the Apple help screens, unplugging/replugging everything, and booting with the Original disk and the Snow Leopard disk. A couple of those attempts produced a minute of the gray apple logo screen, then back to blank. While the disks were in it did sound like it was trying to read them, but spit out the disks after about 5 minutes.

PowerPC :: Setting Up A RAID On G4 / Don't Have Original Install Disc

Nov 20, 2008

I wonder if anyone can give me the basic steps to setting up a RAID array on a Powermac G4 (I think I mean a Raid 0 ie one extra hard drive).I have looked up a couple of articles but they advise to use the original install disc during the set up process. Unfortunately I don't have the original install disc. I have available one extra internal hard drive and one external hard drive.

I would like to set it up so that there are two internal hard drives with one replicating to the other one.

Intel Mac :: Using Original Install Disk To Reset Password?

May 26, 2012

I have a 2008 iMac running Lion 10.7.2. I am trying to reset my Admin P/W,( I do not remember setting one up in the first place, but trying to use Terminal recently to do Maintenance scripts, it asked for one, which I cannot oblige it with). (I only put in a Master P/W).

The method  I have been reading requires using the original software disk supplied with the Mac. My iMac came with Leopard, whch I upgraded to Snow Leopard and now to Lion.

Will the original Leopard disk be suitable for the above? or do I require the Lion recovery or whatever to do this task.

I just experienced the 8600m GT video failure and am bringing the computer to Apple tomorrow. Over a year ago I replaced my stock drive with a WD scorpio black drive 320gb over a year ago. Do I need to swap out my WD for the original HD? I have a recent time machine back up of my data, but I'm more concerned about someone denying warranty service because I swapped out my drive. What have you guys been doing when bringing your machine in for service? Does it matter that my original drive has not been updated for over a year?

MacBook Pro :: How To Move Original Files To External Drive, Not Just Copy And Delete Original

Dec 31, 2009

I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.

OS X :: Reinstall Original Leopard Disc

Oct 16, 2009

I have got my first mac (imac) so sorry if this is a really simple question. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard but I am having bits of trouble with printing. As I have not yet got much data on my Mac I am thinking of going back to my original installation that came with the imac. I have backed up my data I want keep photos, music etc; onto DVD. When I put the installation disc in what is the best option to pick ? I do appreciate that I will have to re-install photoshop and other apps; I have installed. Will I have to re-configure my internet again? Basically I want to re-install the operating system I am also thinking of buying Superdupper any thoughts on this product.

All well and good, but I don't think I have any of the original dock image files anywhere. Short of reinstalling Leopard from scratch, is there any way (or utility) to get my dock back to the default Leopard version?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Fixing An Alias By Editing Path Of 'original'

Mar 19, 2012

I had to move around data and now I have a ton of aliases to fix. I know you can fix an alias by doing "get info" and find original but the window that opens hides the original path and can't be moved. Further more I'd simply need to edit out the first part of the "original" location. I thought opening an alias in textedit would allow me to do that easily but it's unreadable. how I could fix these quickly instead of browsing deep in folder structure to find them again?

OS X :: Installing Leopard Back On Original HD / SuperDuper Unable To Perform Operation

Aug 7, 2010

I'm planning of sending in my white macbook to AppleCare for a few repairs regarding the white casing (cracks) but do not want to send in my Western Digital 500GB Hard Drive.

I called AppleCare and they said they prefer it when you send in the original hard drive, for whatever reason they stated. My personal reason why I don't want to send in my 500GB Hard Drive is that I have a ton of files in there that are important and don't have another 300+ hard drive lying around to back everything up. Another reason is that my Leopard Family Pack disc I purchase years ago is at my parent's house in New York and I live in California, so getting it would be a huge hassle considering it's somewhere in boxes of storage and my folks are in Venice till the 15th of June.

Look, essentially what I'm freaking out over is that I've heard many cases that when you send in your computer to applecare, its not uncommon to get a macbook back with an erased hard drive.

I just don't wanna deal with the hassle. So am looking to avoid it altogether. Doing so bytaking out my 500GB HD and popping in the original 80GB HD that the Mac came with. I thought I had Leopard in there but when I put in the 80GB HD in the Macbook and turned on the Mac, a confused faced folder came on and turned off.

I want to send in my Macbook with the 80GB HD and that HD to have Leopard on it...so I decided to do the same method I used when I transferred everything from my 80GB HD to my 500GB HD when I first purchased it.

I used SuperDuper! application, free version...but it didn't work.

I set it up to "Copy: Mac HD to Untitled" (Untitled was the name of the 80GB since I erased it when I got my 500GB HD hoping to use it for Time Machine but never did)

I tried this twice, each time taking about 2 hours to transfer and copy to the untitled HD. I tried "back up all files" & "back up user files." But after this process was done and I popped in the untitled HD into the Mac I continued to get the same confused folder face..twice.

Any help on the matter is really appreciated as I'm highly considering not even sending my Macbook in with the 500GB HD to completely avoid any possible frustation if that HD was to magically erased.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Migration Assistant - Data/content Files Isn't Recognizing The Old, Original Contents?

Mar 13, 2012

I had an Imac running Snow Leopard... I mistakenly(?) thought i could change Permissions by selecting "Everyone" from the startup volume HD icon's Permissions panel and in turn, chose "Apply to All Enclosed Files and Folders" option thinking this would allow all other computers on a small office network to have total free and clear no-security-required, file-sharing read/write- access to this Imac's contents. After doing this and attempting reboot, I couldn't get access to the OS  at all even after i ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtilities, so, wound up doing Archive/Install - but used an OS 10.5 disk because i (mistakenly)thought that my 10.6 Snow Leopard disk was only an Updater.  So after installing 10.5 again I ran the OS 10.63 disk's installer, bringing the new System Folder up to Snow Leopard. I'm up and running - most system software updates downloaded/done.  Problem is now this --  stuff like:  Email Clients,  Itunes, Browsers, any Apps  that had associated data/content files isn't recognizing the old, original contents that belonged to them - instead, these apps all
