OS X :: Remove All Previous Owners Files, Docs, Etc Without Restoring?
Nov 22, 2010
I bought a used late 2009 MacBook & Mac Mini HTPC loaded with apps/programs and this is my first run with Macs. The previous owner didn't restore them at my request as part of the deal, all of the software discs and serial numbers went with his other MacBook when he sold it and if I restore I will lose everything but iwork and snow leopard, I can't afford to buy new and don't want illegitimate copies of CS5 Master collection and tons of others that can't be updated. I have spent two days attempting to remove his what seem to be thousands of files, docs, etc and seem to be getting nowhere and don't want to accidentally remove any operating components either. Is it possible to delete the user that installed all this software to wipe out his info/files without losing the software itself? He is the only user besides "guests", "staff" and "everyone else", I renamed it once but it seems to revert when I go to another app?

I bought my MBP 2.8 second hand a few months back. The seller created an account under my name - which all works fine. He also left a bunch of graphics apps that I want to keep ( so I'd rather not re-install OS X ) - when I start the computer I get the log on panel - and just above the name field where you put in your account name, it says " Joe Bloggs Macbook Pro ".
How can I change this so it says my name?

We have purchased a 2nd hand iMac from Amazon and have been trying to download from the Mac App Store, we both have Apple IDs but when we are trying to download/purchase an app that was previously downloaded by the last owner it is only giving us the option to Accept and not purchase, after signing in it then gives us the error message that it has already been downloaded to the previous ID and if we want to download it we need to re-purchase it, which is fine.we did not get any original media in the box so cannot factory reset and redownload.Â

So I took an account photo when i recently installed leopard at the start up...when it's creating the account and all of that stuff...
I was messing around with Photo Booth, and clicked the account photo button, and it replaced the old one that i like with a new one...
How can i get my old one back? where was it located? I have made time machine backups, so maybe if i knew where the old photo is stored at, i could retrive it?

Now, when I hit the "Remove From List" button, the entry disappears, but it reappears the next time I check the Previous Recipients List. I simply cannot get rid of obosete entries.

I know; there's the "Save as PDF" in the "Print" dialogue. But, is there a plug-in/add-on for Office 2004 that allows for some additional features?

Basically, before I started using AppZapper for complete removal of the programs, I was just doing the drag'n'drop thing to the Trash when uninstalling programs.
Now I do not wish to keep my MBP polluted with unnecessary cache and other "remnants" of the previous programs that might not have been removed completely by the drag & drop method.
I've downloaded CleanApp, but from the looks of things it seems just like another AppZapper type of a program - for deleting current applications. However, I'd need something to look for possible remains of my previously installed programs.
Is there such a program?

Just a quick question.... when you install a new OS you have the opportunity of copying all your stuff over from another drive via Migration Assistant. Where does it dump all the files? Does it mirror how it originally was, only in the new OS, or is it put all in the Home folder?
Secondly, when we install Snow Leopard we're supposed to get 6GB more space than before. Would this be the case with any type of install, be it erase and install, archive and install or just upgrade?
Basically I'm wondering how you go about getting the extra 6GB space plus having all my stuff and settings as it was it was in the previous OS?

I run Microsoft Office on my MacBook Pro. I routinely "print" Word documents to .pdf files. My conversions to .pdf are now resulting in two .pdf documents rather than one multipage document. For example, a two page Word document about puppies would be converted Puppies and Puppies.2 rather than just one 2-page .pdf file. A 14-page file just also saved as two separate .pdf files; the first was only one page, and the second contained the other 13 pages. This is a new problem as of tonight; I've never previously had any difficulty. It's quite frustrating, and I can't seem to determine the cause.

I bootcamped my Macbook Pro with minimal assistance from my mac geek husband tonight - and messed up - BIG TIME. When in the "partition mode" of windows it asked which of the systems I wanted to FAT or partition. Well - me not knowing - thought the 200mb space was a little small and deleted it.
When the system restarted and I read the error - I knew I was in BIG trouble. So I went to boot camp assistant and got this message:
The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
I am FREAKING out BIG TIME! Can you help me to restore the information - so I may go and humbly as my husband to help me do it right - or maybe google the directions before starting.

I accidentally deleted all my iTunes music, movie, app, etc files while trying to move it to an External HD. I was able to restore the files using third party software, from the sql layer. However, each fille now has a name like "54678990.m4v" as opposed to "Thor.m4v" and it appears they all need to be "re-linked" to the titles in my iTunes window interface.Â
I restored the files to the External HD actually, and when I click directly on them, they do play in iTunes and a little exclamation point appears next to the name of the file (eg, 'Thor' in the iTunes window). That is telling me, I think, that there is some kind of issue with naming and linking to the actual file on the External HD.Â
Is there some relatively easy way to do get this all straight and clean and seamless for like 1000 files?

My Time Machine external drive is flaky so I'm replacing it. What I did was copy my backups folder to my iMac's main drive temporarily because I was unsure of the process. Will I be able to move that folder to the new drive and restore Time Machine or not? If there's another process, please advise me. I don't trust the old drive another day, its working intermittently and making clicking noises of death for a week now. BTW, how many are using USB vs FireWire for a Time Machine Backup Drive. Would a FW (for whatever reason) drive be more reliable than a USB one? Or vice versa?

Has anyone heard of some third party software used to help simplify the process of restoring or retrieving individual files via TIME MACHINE?
I have some trouble sorting out the navigation window, when it offers choices between KEEP BOTH or RESTORE ORIGINAL. I seem to end up not finding the earlier file. Then a friend said he had heard of software that simplifies this process. I've tried Forum search but no luck yet.

I have an external hard drive that I use to watch movies on a Nintendo Wii and some of the movie files are over 7GB, which means when I format the drive to FAT32 I cannot copy the larger files. What are my options for getting around this problem? I have VMware fusion but I cannot easily see my external drive in XP. Is it possible to format the drive in XP and then transfer everything via VMware on XP?

I have a time machine backup I need to restore. It's a backup from an external drive that has failed. Â
When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted. It's not mounted because it has failed. I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect. Â
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?Â
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive? Then will it show up?Â

I have the latest MacBook Pro Retina 15 with 16gb of RAM but am having problems with one of my external HDDs (1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0). I was using 500GB for Time Machine and that seemed to be working well but when trying to write to the other 500GB I have been getting write errors with some files of late.Â
I have now bought another LaCieRugged Thunderbolt 1TB HDD and want to copy files from the 500GB partition (non-TM) to that before doing a complete reformat of the now 2 partition drive(1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0). Then after restoring the files to the reformatted HDD I want to use the new Thunderbolt drive for Time Machine. Any free/non-free 100% reliable backup software.

I belong to a camera club and they asked for submissions in sRGB jpegs and not imbedded. I may have been confused when I saw my image show up in the message as well as the attachment above. Any way the fellow I was sending them to said he couldn't open them. I have sent hundreds of jpegs and never had a problem. Has anyone had this experience? I went back to the tiff and turned off the imbed in sRGB and saved in Microsoft preference and then converted to jpeg. I can't believe in this day and age jpegs are still a problem being read.

If I could I would get rid of everything related to Microsoft but unfortunately I need to use Windows applications for my work. Specifically, Autocad Civil 3D, Revit Architecture and a bunch of structural engineering programs. I have tried running these applications on Parallels on Mac systems such as MacBook Pro Mid 2009 (2.93 C2D, 4gb ram) but was not satisfied with the performance. Autocad was lagging even when working in 2D. I don't even have to talk about Revit... I never had the opportunity to test this on more powerful systems and this is where I need your advice. Is it possible for the Mac Pro to run these applications on Parallels seamlessly? That is, as if you were running Windows on a PC? What is more important CPU, RAM, GPU? To catch up with a few possible comments, a) I don't want to run Windows via bootcamp, b) I am aware that Autacad is coming to Mac OS but I need the extra features of Civil 3D and Revit.
