Just a quick question.... when you install a new OS you have the opportunity of copying all your stuff over from another drive via Migration Assistant. Where does it dump all the files? Does it mirror how it originally was, only in the new OS, or is it put all in the Home folder?
Secondly, when we install Snow Leopard we're supposed to get 6GB more space than before. Would this be the case with any type of install, be it erase and install, archive and install or just upgrade?
Basically I'm wondering how you go about getting the extra 6GB space plus having all my stuff and settings as it was it was in the previous OS?
In my office one of my iMac's suffered a complete system crash. I am reinstalling OS X Lion as I write this post. The iMac was backed up to an external hard drive using time machine. After the new install of Lion how do I grab my user files from the machine backup?
I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard and I'm wondering if I can just make a copy (to my external HD) of my entire Music and Pictures folders, and then drag them to replace the new ones created in the clean install? If I do so, will my photos and music appear in iTunes/iPhoto as it should?
I own a MBP 2009 and assuming I get the newest one 2012 ... will the installation be as straightforward as running Time Machine restore against the new one? or will it get a bit more complicated given the hardware differences?Â

I am doing a clean install on my Mac Pro and want to bring in my user directory onto a 2nd drive (where it was originally).During the install, should I point to an external drive where I know have my user directory cloned and allow OS X to restore it?Should I just copy my user directory to the 2nd drive after doing the install?
Other caveats? I can foresee all sorts of potential problems. Anybody have any experience with this?I know that I will lose my apps in the process.
I had to give up my Macbook Pro and am now going back to my Macbook. I have everything loaded on a Time Machine backup, but am having trouble getting to my Macbook. I bought a Leopard Install DVD back when they were released, but when I pulled it out I saw it is now scratched. Can I use a Macbook Pro Leopard install disk to restore my Time Machine backup to a Macbook? If not, is there any way to completely restore a computer from a Time Machine backup without an install disk?
I recently decided to partition my hard drive on my macbook in order to install Windows 7, but upon doing so I was greeted with a message informing me that some files couldn't be moved and that I would have to reformat my HD. I created a backup disk image using disk utility and proceeded to erase and reinstall my OS. My OS is now reinstalled but I don't know how to go about using my backup to add all my old preferences, files, and applications. I've tried using restore through the disk utility but it isn't allowing me to do so. All I want are my old files and the ability to partition my drive!
First timer Here so be gentle. I was creating invoices using quickbooks and for some reason decided to exit the program without saving the invoices I just created. Can I recover the work that I did? It was a lot of work I do not want to have to do over again. Does time machine back up EVERYTHING on my computer? PLease help, I am stressing out
I just got a new macbook pro with a larger hard drive! I used time machine to restore all my sytem settings etc from my old macbook, but it didnt have all my videos and music etc because the hdd was too small. I used ccc to clone my hdd every once in a while to save all my videos. I now want to restore everything on my mbp that I couldnt keep on my macbook because of the size. How can I do that with my ccc clone? I choose the ext hdd for the source but then my macintosh hdd doesnt show up in the target?
I bootcamped my Macbook Pro with minimal assistance from my mac geek husband tonight - and messed up - BIG TIME. When in the "partition mode" of windows it asked which of the systems I wanted to FAT or partition. Well - me not knowing - thought the 200mb space was a little small and deleted it.
When the system restarted and I read the error - I knew I was in BIG trouble. So I went to boot camp assistant and got this message:
The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
I am FREAKING out BIG TIME! Can you help me to restore the information - so I may go and humbly as my husband to help me do it right - or maybe google the directions before starting.
I accidentally deleted all my iTunes music, movie, app, etc files while trying to move it to an External HD. I was able to restore the files using third party software, from the sql layer. However, each fille now has a name like "54678990.m4v" as opposed to "Thor.m4v" and it appears they all need to be "re-linked" to the titles in my iTunes window interface.Â
I restored the files to the External HD actually, and when I click directly on them, they do play in iTunes and a little exclamation point appears next to the name of the file (eg, 'Thor' in the iTunes window). That is telling me, I think, that there is some kind of issue with naming and linking to the actual file on the External HD.Â
Is there some relatively easy way to do get this all straight and clean and seamless for like 1000 files?

I am organizing all my pictures fro1999 to the present. Some exist only in backup files. Is it possible to restor only picture files (not the complete backup) from older backup files from my earlier iMac
I bought a used late 2009 MacBook & Mac Mini HTPC loaded with apps/programs and this is my first run with Macs. The previous owner didn't restore them at my request as part of the deal, all of the software discs and serial numbers went with his other MacBook when he sold it and if I restore I will lose everything but iwork and snow leopard, I can't afford to buy new and don't want illegitimate copies of CS5 Master collection and tons of others that can't be updated. I have spent two days attempting to remove his what seem to be thousands of files, docs, etc and seem to be getting nowhere and don't want to accidentally remove any operating components either. Is it possible to delete the user that installed all this software to wipe out his info/files without losing the software itself? He is the only user besides "guests", "staff" and "everyone else", I renamed it once but it seems to revert when I go to another app?
My Time Machine external drive is flaky so I'm replacing it. What I did was copy my backups folder to my iMac's main drive temporarily because I was unsure of the process. Will I be able to move that folder to the new drive and restore Time Machine or not? If there's another process, please advise me. I don't trust the old drive another day, its working intermittently and making clicking noises of death for a week now. BTW, how many are using USB vs FireWire for a Time Machine Backup Drive. Would a FW (for whatever reason) drive be more reliable than a USB one? Or vice versa?
Has anyone heard of some third party software used to help simplify the process of restoring or retrieving individual files via TIME MACHINE?
I have some trouble sorting out the navigation window, when it offers choices between KEEP BOTH or RESTORE ORIGINAL. I seem to end up not finding the earlier file. Then a friend said he had heard of software that simplifies this process. I've tried Forum search but no luck yet.
I lost the main HDD on my Mac G5 running Panther 10.4. I have a TM back up onto an external drive and bought a new internal drive. How do I restore all my files from the external back up to the new internal HDD so I can run my computer as it was.
I have copied many Cd's and digital music files to iTunes but since restoring my hard drive, this message appears every time I click of most songs in my library: "...original file can not be found. Would you like to locate it?" However, I can't find it.
I just bought and installed snow leopard and when i did i restored to factory settings so i could start fresh. However i wanted to restore my itunes back to how it was, but i can seem to work it out. If someone could tell me an easy way to do
I have an external hard drive that I use to watch movies on a Nintendo Wii and some of the movie files are over 7GB, which means when I format the drive to FAT32 I cannot copy the larger files. What are my options for getting around this problem? I have VMware fusion but I cannot easily see my external drive in XP. Is it possible to format the drive in XP and then transfer everything via VMware on XP?
i'm planning to format my mac book pro, as in, reinstalling leopard and erasing all the files and applications since my mac is getting really slow. I was wondering if the applications ( adobe photoshop, illustrator, final cut etc.) that i backed-up in my time machine will still work on a formatted mac.
I have a time machine backup I need to restore. It's a backup from an external drive that has failed. Â
When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted. It's not mounted because it has failed. I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect. Â
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?Â
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive? Then will it show up?Â
I have the latest MacBook Pro Retina 15 with 16gb of RAM but am having problems with one of my external HDDs (1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0). I was using 500GB for Time Machine and that seemed to be working well but when trying to write to the other 500GB I have been getting write errors with some files of late.Â
I have now bought another LaCieRugged Thunderbolt 1TB HDD and want to copy files from the 500GB partition (non-TM) to that before doing a complete reformat of the now 2 partition drive(1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0). Then after restoring the files to the reformatted HDD I want to use the new Thunderbolt drive for Time Machine. Any free/non-free 100% reliable backup software.
I have a ".iso" installation file and I just can't read it in my Mac (Mac OS X). When I double-click on the file, it doesn't work. The message I get says it's "not recognized". That ".iso" file installs properly in my PC. I searched this forum and learned that normally, ISO files should automatically work with Mac OS X. Well, it's not the case for me! I have a 4 years old Mac book with Mac OS X.
Ok, so I know that this shouldn't be a problem, but I just wanted to make sure. My sister's Macbook is currently a mess and I want to do an archive and install on her system. She keeps absolutely everything on folders on her desktop. Will the archive and install keep all of her files even if they are in the desktop?
I am new to mac, I have a macbook on 10.4.11 OS. I am unable to install any .pkg files, I tried to install a driver for wacom tablet ( I get the file from wacom website, apple site directed me to there), my laptop cant open the file, it gives no error code neither, it gives no respond no reaction to my click, double click and try to use open with "installer" move. I did check, in my utility dir there is a installer, but I dont know why it cant install/pkg files for me. I also checked crash reporter under log, there is no crash report log for installer. Same story happens to canon printer driver .pkg file too. I also lose the disks went with laptop so I may have difficult to reinstall the system.
Just wondering if you can play MP4 video files on OSX without having to install or buy anything. I've had such a pain with my windows machine in trying to find codecs to play these files.
Just wondering if the Mac is also easier on this end too. I can't wait till Leopard because I'm jumping off this windows ship asap.
i just got my mac book pro a few days ago, does anyone know how to get rid of some unecesary files to clean up the hard drive? leopard takes up so much room
