MacBook Pro :: After Restoring Files To Reformatted HDD / Use New Thunderbolt Drive For Time Machine

I have the latest MacBook Pro Retina 15 with 16gb of RAM but am having problems with one of my external HDDs (1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0). I was using 500GB for Time Machine and that seemed to be working well but when trying to write to the other 500GB I have been getting write errors with some files of late.Â
I have now bought another LaCieRugged Thunderbolt 1TB HDD and want to copy files from the 500GB partition (non-TM) to that before doing a complete reformat of the now 2 partition drive(1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0). Then after restoring the files to the reformatted HDD I want to use the new Thunderbolt drive for Time Machine. Any free/non-free 100% reliable backup software.

My Time Machine external drive is flaky so I'm replacing it. What I did was copy my backups folder to my iMac's main drive temporarily because I was unsure of the process. Will I be able to move that folder to the new drive and restore Time Machine or not? If there's another process, please advise me. I don't trust the old drive another day, its working intermittently and making clicking noises of death for a week now. BTW, how many are using USB vs FireWire for a Time Machine Backup Drive. Would a FW (for whatever reason) drive be more reliable than a USB one? Or vice versa?

I have a time machine backup I need to restore. It's a backup from an external drive that has failed. Â
When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted. It's not mounted because it has failed. I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect. Â
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?Â
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive? Then will it show up?Â

My time machine backups to an external drive stopped with a message that the backup could not be done because the drive could not be repaired and needed to be reformatted. Prior to reformatting I copied the TM backup file of 250GB to my desktop. My internal drive is 500GB and this only leaves me with 33GB of available space. I then reformatted the drive with the proper OS extended journaled and GUID partition. The external drive is 500GB. When I try to copy the backup file from the desktop to the reformatted drive the process begins normally with the message "preparing to copy files" but as the preparation process reaches 13,000,000 files it stops with the message "there is not enough sufficient space to copy files" even though it never even got to the actual file transfer. I have tried copying the backups in small batches to the new drive but I get an error message that backup files cannot be modified.Â

First timer Here so be gentle. I was creating invoices using quickbooks and for some reason decided to exit the program without saving the invoices I just created. Can I recover the work that I did? Has anyone heard of some third party software used to help simplify the process of restoring or retrieving individual files via TIME MACHINE?
I have some trouble sorting out the navigation window, when it offers choices between KEEP BOTH or RESTORE ORIGINAL. I seem to end up not finding the earlier file.Then a friend said he had heard of software that simplifies this process. I've tried Forum search but no luck yet.

i'm planning to format my mac book pro, as in, reinstalling leopard and erasing all the files and applications since my mac is getting really slow. I was wondering if the applications ( adobe photoshop, illustrator, final cut etc.) that i backed-up in my time machine will still work on a formatted mac.

I have a question about upgrading the harddisk on my unibody macbook (last year's model). I have done a time machine backup and the macbook is running snow leopard. However, I currently don't have the snow leopard DVD with me, only the leopard DVD that came with the macbook. Can I still do the hard disk upgrade? In other words, can I boot with the leopard DVD, and restore back to snow leopard via time machine or do I need the snow leopard dvd?

I changed my HD in my MacBook Pro to a bigger one and then wanted to Restore the System via Time Machine onto that new HD. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?

I cannot believe I am actually in this position, but I accidentally reformatted my lacie 1TB external HD. The files were not overwritten as it was the most basic and quick format option, but they are not accessible.
Can anyone recommend a good data recovery app that works for OS X?
Anyone know what the best course of action would be?

I have an imac and a few months ago I wiped the computer using a 7 pass wipe or whatever it's called - i totally wiped everything off the computer as i thought it had a virus. I also then reformatted my external hard drive. My mac and my harddrive now have new data on but can you beleive it, I have lost a very important document which was on my mac before it was wiped and was on my external hard drive and I really need it back.

My hard drive crashed. Luckily I have a recent Back up made on an external USB drive made under 10.4. The new hard drive has had 10.5 installed on it. However, I need to restore from the 10.4 back up. Migration assistant doesn't see the back up disk.

Today, I bought a 500gb Western Digital 5400rpm hard drive to replace the 160gb hard drive in my MacBook (a late 2008 2.0ghz unibody macbook). My MacBook has Snow Leopard 10.6.2. on it btw. I took the new hard drive, placed it in an enclosure and formatted it to Mac OS Extended (journaled), and turned off and replaced the old drive with the new one. I then took the disk that came with my mac, inserted it, and chose to restore from Time Machine to copy it to my bigger hard drive. It finished and, as the computer restarted I got this error, which an Apple rep. told me was a "Kernel Panic" or something along the lines of that.
He told me to try clean installing Leopard onto the new HDD to see if it would work. I did and, sure enough, it worked, When I chose though to restore my files from Time Machine when it finished, it said that "Time Machine could not restore the files because the version of OS X on the Time Machine disc is different than Leopard 10.5." Thus, to work around this, I installed Snow Leopard (the $29 upgrade) and it booted into SL fine. It is a clean version of Snow Leopard and I cannot get my Mac restored how it was.
Migration Assistant will only move files but my computer was very personalized and I want to restore it from Time Machine. Apparently though, the only way to do that is through the original disk that came with the machine and I cannot do that as it won't recognize the fact the the Time Machine backup is of an Snow Leopard MacBook and the software to re-install OS X is for Leopard only. What can I do to restore from Time Machine now?

Apple replaced my hard drive and logic board. I tried using my Time Machine to restore everything. It appears as though my internal hard drive is full with my old information that was transferred over from my Time Machine, but I can't seem to access the information. I need to know how to get everything back to where it needs to go. Also, when I go to the internal hard drive and look at things like my ical to see if my calendar is there, the ical is blank. If it was transferred from my Time Machine, shouldn't it be full?Â

My MBA Mid-2011 seems to be running hot and it gets hung up on just about every application I try to use. I am current on all updates and clear of any viruses. I was going to restore but wow what a pain and I was wondering instead of restoring to factory I was going to restore from my back up in Time Machine, but if I were to do that wouldnt I just be restoring the same issue I am currently having?

I went to make a copy of an important drive and accidentally re-formatted it (re-formatted mac journaled, originally mac journaled). The drive contained a bunch of important disk image files which I need to retrieve whole. I'm fairly confident that the files are still there and only the table information got overwritten, as the re-format took about 30 seconds. None of the recovery software I've seen however, can retrieve .dmg files, or such large files (these are up to 32 gb each in size).how I can retrieve these disk image files?Â

I'm upgrading my MBP hard drive - I currently have it partitioned into two 120GB drives (Mac/Bootcamp). My new hard drive will be a bigger size - can I boot off the install CD and restore to a new sized partition? Or does the partition need to be the same size?

I've just got a new MBP13 yesterday and was too engrossed in putting every documents and installing every programs that I have into my new MBP13. Until this morning, I just realized that I am hit by this pretty common issue of having a 'wobbly' MBP. Its like, it doesn't seat flat on the flat surface. I've tried a few surfaces from wooden table to glass tops, its still the same.
So, I've called Apple after sales and they are kind enough to do a 1 to 1 replacement, but I have to wait for 4 days without my MBP for them to turn it around. Seems abit long for me to be frank, but AppleCare starts afresh. Alright, long story aside, as I am too lazy to reinstall and putting all my important documents back to the even newer MBP13 that is coming, is it possible for me to do a Time Machine backup from here, then just restore everything to the new MBP13 without any problems? Specs wise its 100% the same.

I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.

Last week my macbook crashed and it turns out its a hard disk failure, so I fixed it and restored it using time machine, after restoring it I restarted it then when the apple logo appears, a box saying to restart the computer by pressing the power button in a couple of messages! I restart then the same thing!!!! what to do! I have exams and projects I need my mac! Just a note: the mac was working properly after fixing the hard disk before restoring!

Besides the programs that won't working jumping into 10.6, are there any other issues i might face? My Macbook has not been running very stable and I decided to restore from a backup via Time Machine. My problem is my install disks are Leopard (10.5) and my backups are from Snow Leopard (10.6). I installed Snow Leopard from an Upgrade disk which I don't still have.
I have no luck restoring the Snow Leopard backups. My question is, how would I recover these backups without the Snow Leopard install disk? Is it possible or do I need to do a fresh install, upgrade then enter time machine via the OS itself?

I did a complete restore with Time Machine after replacing my hard drive with the seagate momentus XT. Now Mail and Safari will not work and crash right away. They crash every time I open them. All the other applications work just fine. Â

I need to use Time Machine to backup my MacBook Pro with thunderbolt.
I would like to use the Promise R4Â RAID that is attached to my Mac Pro 6.1 ( as a set up for the Mac Pro time machine and storage). What is the best way to do this ? I am a bit unsure if I can do this by thunderbolt daisy chaining without disconnecting the Promise from the Mac Pro.
Is there a way to use the thunderbolt capabilities for speed. I am running Mavericks.

I upgraded my old PBG4 to a new MBP yesterday. On my PBG4 I have an external drive with Time Machine backup. I noticed in setting up the new machine that I could migrate old user data to the new mac, and one of the options was via a Time Machine disk. Does this work, even if you're going between machines?
The old computer is a PowerPC laptop and the new one is Intel. Are there differences in things like drivers and stuff or would all the data and settings transfer over no problems? I always figured that the restore from Time Machine was to restore a backup onto the same machine (i.e. recover from a crash or OS corruption) but don't know if it works from going between an old machine and a new one?

I'm running on an iMac and my system recently crashed. I went through the whole process of trying to reboot in Safe mode, then running Disk Utility, then 'fsck'. Looks like my drive should work, but it still freezes upon startup.
So. My last option is to reinstall OS X from my install disk. Not a big deal since I've been running Time Machine backups on an external drive. Here's the problem: my install disk is 10.4.10 but my backups are from Leopard. I upgraded to Leopard online without purchasing a disk.
Is there any way to do a full system restore from my Time Machine backup without the 10.5 disk?
Can I reinstall 10.4, then upgrade to Leopard (or Snow Leopard), and then run my full restore? Would I then need to clone my system to a separate drive before restoring to my internal drive?
