In my office one of my iMac's suffered a complete system crash. I am reinstalling OS X Lion as I write this post. The iMac was backed up to an external hard drive using time machine. After the new install of Lion how do I grab my user files from the machine backup?

I had to give up my Macbook Pro and am now going back to my Macbook. I have everything loaded on a Time Machine backup, but am having trouble getting to my Macbook. I bought a Leopard Install DVD back when they were released, but when I pulled it out I saw it is now scratched. Can I use a Macbook Pro Leopard install disk to restore my Time Machine backup to a Macbook? If not, is there any way to completely restore a computer from a Time Machine backup without an install disk?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Time Machine external drive is flaky so I'm replacing it. What I did was copy my backups folder to my iMac's main drive temporarily because I was unsure of the process. Will I be able to move that folder to the new drive and restore Time Machine or not? If there's another process, please advise me. I don't trust the old drive another day, its working intermittently and making clicking noises of death for a week now. BTW, how many are using USB vs FireWire for a Time Machine Backup Drive. Would a FW (for whatever reason) drive be more reliable than a USB one? Or vice versa?

I have some trouble sorting out the navigation window, when it offers choices between KEEP BOTH or RESTORE ORIGINAL. I seem to end up not finding the earlier file.Then a friend said he had heard of software that simplifies this process. I've tried Forum search but no luck yet.
i'm planning to format my mac book pro, as in, reinstalling leopard and erasing all the files and applications since my mac is getting really slow. I was wondering if the applications ( adobe photoshop, illustrator, final cut etc.) that i backed-up in my time machine will still work on a formatted mac.

When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted. It's not mounted because it has failed. I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect. Â
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?Â
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive? Then will it show up?Â

I have an old MBP that I am replacing with a new Retina Display MBP. Last night I did a full backup of my entire MBP (there are actually 2 hard drives in it, I took out the optical drive and used an OWC kit). Today, I restore that backup to my new MBP. I set it to restore everything. However, it only restore the one drive as my new MBP does not have 2 hard drives. I know the 2nd drive is in the Time Machine backup. So how do I manually go in and retrieve those items?

I have TM running and I have restored the INBOX.mbox file to the finder just in case. And here are the steps I have followed:Â Tried to restore all the emails into the inbox in question through TimeMachine in Mail.Tried to restore the entire INBOX through TimeMachine in Mail.Tried to restore email via importing the recovered folder.Tried to do a test import of 1 email through TimeMachine in Mail.Â
All failed.Â
The sent items are still OK and present, and the account is in active use, so if I could just restore the inbox emails that would be the best.Â
I understand that when they are restored they will need to upload to the server and populate there, but 2 hours should definitely be enough and there is no visible activity in my mail to indicate that is happening.Â

I don't want to restore the whole shebang from my Time Machine backup because I want my apps to be installed clean. So my first question is about restoring my mail. I understand that I should make Mail my current application, then click on "Enter Time Machine."When I do that, I see "Today" which is my current setup - nothing much on my computer. I try to go back in time, but I can't because Time Machine thinks "Today" is the only existing backup. How can I get Time Machine to restore Mail from my hard drive before it was wiped clean?Â

This morning I thought I was deleting the keychain password to one account, when I accidentally deleted all of my keychain storage items. I followed the directions from the Support Community to restore the Keychain Folder using my Time Machine backup. I even restored the .plist files. Â
However, now when I open a site in Safari, only the user name is pre-populated, but not the password. When Safari asks me if I want to save the password in my Keychain, an error message pops up telling me "A keychain cannot be found to store password."  I'm given the option to Cancel or Reset to Defaults. I'm not sure what to do. I'm even afraid to restart my Mac fearing I won't be able to log in or connect to my wifi network.Â
I also cannot get any of my emails through the Mail application. It keeps prompting me to enter my password, but then won't allow me to hit the Okay button b/c it's grayed-out.Â

Ever since I downloaded iplayer - my mac has been running slow. I have followed a few tips to remove it and all other related files - but it still runs low (spinning wheel of death) and now pdf's dont download correctly (I guess I have deleted too much).Â
My ideal would be to start from scrach - although I want to keep my itunes and iphotos files as well as my documents. Is there a way to reload back to factory settings then add selected programs and folders from timemachine? I am in the process of timemachine backing up everything now.Â

I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.
I was just wondering how it works using Time Machine to get everything back on my Mac after installing SL via a clean install.. Will everything be exactly as it was before the wipe and install, or are there certain things, like Mail for example that will need to be reconfigured?
View 10 Replies View RelatedSo my hard-drive died. Luckily I have a Time Machine backup of my system. I bought a new HD and tried to restore from the backup. No-go. It complains that it can't restore certain file, so it snorts the restore. I tried an older backup, no help.
So I decided to do a fresh install instead. But once I have OS up & running again, can I restore files from my old Time Machine backup? How does the process work? I'm afraid if I point Time Machone to my old backup, it will overwrite it.
I do have my files backed up manually as well, so I can always copy them by hand. Bit that backup is not as recent as the TM backup.
I ordered the $29 upgrade online. I was wondering if I could do a hard drive format and fresh install then restore my photos and documents and mp3s from my Time Capsule using Time Machine. This would probably free up even more HD space and make the OS cleaner and fresher, no? Would this be possible?

I noticed in setting up the new machine that I could migrate old user data to the new mac, and one of the options was via a Time Machine disk. Does this work, even if you're going between machines?
The old computer is a PowerPC laptop and the new one is Intel. Are there differences in things like drivers and stuff or would all the data and settings transfer over no problems? I always figured that the restore from Time Machine was to restore a backup onto the same machine (i.e. recover from a crash or OS corruption) but don't know if it works from going between an old machine and a new one?
I'm running on an iMac and my system recently crashed. I went through the whole process of trying to reboot in Safe mode, then running Disk Utility, then 'fsck'. Looks like my drive should work, but it still freezes upon startup.
So. My last option is to reinstall OS X from my install disk. Not a big deal since I've been running Time Machine backups on an external drive. Here's the problem: my install disk is 10.4.10 but my backups are from Leopard. I upgraded to Leopard online without purchasing a disk.
Is there any way to do a full system restore from my Time Machine backup without the 10.5 disk?
Can I reinstall 10.4, then upgrade to Leopard (or Snow Leopard), and then run my full restore? Would I then need to clone my system to a separate drive before restoring to my internal drive?

If I had to send the laptop in for service I would be without my data for possibly quite some time. So I'm wondering - if I owned a second Mac (maybe an iMac), could I plug in my Time Machine drive and access the data? Could I selectively restore files and folders to the iMac?
View 1 Replies View RelatedToday, I bought a 500gb Western Digital 5400rpm hard drive to replace the 160gb hard drive in my MacBook (a late 2008 2.0ghz unibody macbook). My MacBook has Snow Leopard 10.6.2. on it btw. I took the new hard drive, placed it in an enclosure and formatted it to Mac OS Extended (journaled), and turned off and replaced the old drive with the new one. I then took the disk that came with my mac, inserted it, and chose to restore from Time Machine to copy it to my bigger hard drive. It finished and, as the computer restarted I got this error, which an Apple rep. told me was a "Kernel Panic" or something along the lines of that.
He told me to try clean installing Leopard onto the new HDD to see if it would work. I did and, sure enough, it worked, When I chose though to restore my files from Time Machine when it finished, it said that "Time Machine could not restore the files because the version of OS X on the Time Machine disc is different than Leopard 10.5." Thus, to work around this, I installed Snow Leopard (the $29 upgrade) and it booted into SL fine. It is a clean version of Snow Leopard and I cannot get my Mac restored how it was.
Migration Assistant will only move files but my computer was very personalized and I want to restore it from Time Machine. Apparently though, the only way to do that is through the original disk that came with the machine and I cannot do that as it won't recognize the fact the the Time Machine backup is of an Snow Leopard MacBook and the software to re-install OS X is for Leopard only. What can I do to restore from Time Machine now?
I have a Feb 2008 MBP which died and I had some questions about restoring a similar state to a new i5 MBP. I do have the old hard drive (not sure if it works yet) and Time Machine backups.
I was wondering if it is safe to do a complete Time Machine restore because I do not know if any of the files are model specific (and the old laptop does not have the newest version of 10.6.x likely to come on my new MBP). Also, how can I preserve my boot camp partition? Ideally, I would like a slightly bigger boot camp partition on the new laptop, but with an exact clone of the data on the old one. I do know that Time Machine will not restore my Windows partition.
Apple replaced my hard drive and logic board. I tried using my Time Machine to restore everything. It appears as though my internal hard drive is full with my old information that was transferred over from my Time Machine, but I can't seem to access the information. I need to know how to get everything back to where it needs to go. Also, when I go to the internal hard drive and look at things like my ical to see if my calendar is there, the ical is blank. If it was transferred from my Time Machine, shouldn't it be full?Â

My MBA Mid-2011 seems to be running hot and it gets hung up on just about every application I try to use. I am current on all updates and clear of any viruses. I was going to restore but wow what a pain and I was wondering instead of restoring to factory I was going to restore from my back up in Time Machine, but if I were to do that wouldnt I just be restoring the same issue I am currently having?
