OS X Mavericks :: Restoring Time Machine Files From Unmounted External Drive
Aug 31, 2014
I have a time machine backup I need to restore. It's a backup from an external drive that has failed. Â
When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted. It's not mounted because it has failed. I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect. Â
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?Â
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive? Then will it show up?Â

My Time Machine external drive is flaky so I'm replacing it. What I did was copy my backups folder to my iMac's main drive temporarily because I was unsure of the process. Will I be able to move that folder to the new drive and restore Time Machine or not? If there's another process, please advise me. I don't trust the old drive another day, its working intermittently and making clicking noises of death for a week now. BTW, how many are using USB vs FireWire for a Time Machine Backup Drive. Would a FW (for whatever reason) drive be more reliable than a USB one? Or vice versa?

I have the latest MacBook Pro Retina 15 with 16gb of RAM but am having problems with one of my external HDDs (1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0). I was using 500GB for Time Machine and that seemed to be working well but when trying to write to the other 500GB I have been getting write errors with some files of late.Â
I have now bought another LaCieRugged Thunderbolt 1TB HDD and want to copy files from the 500GB partition (non-TM) to that before doing a complete reformat of the now 2 partition drive(1TB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0/2.0). Then after restoring the files to the reformatted HDD I want to use the new Thunderbolt drive for Time Machine. Any free/non-free 100% reliable backup software.

Recently my iCloud account was hacked and all my Contacts were erased. This also caused all my Contacts on my iPhone and iMac to be erased as well. I can restore my Contacts from a Time Machine Back up to my iMac "Address Book", however as soon as I connect back to iCloud, all the contacts are erased. I tried to restore my iPhone from an earlier iPhone backup which restored everything, as far as I know, except the Contacts. I don't have a huge number of contacts or groups, so I don't care if the group information is lost. There seems to be some conflicting information on how to do this correctly, so I'm asking what the current best practice is to restore all my contacts from a Time Machine Backup to iCloud.Â

Why does my external hard drive back up on time machine ok, but when I enter time machine (and the external device isn't plugged in) i can't see it?Â
It appears in time machine fine when the external drive is plugged in, but just not if it's been ejected or Â
I want to have the ext drive backed up in case I lose it or it corrupts....and if that happens I won't be able to plug it in to see the drive in TM - does that make sense?Â
I am running OSX 10.9.3 on a Mid 2010 Mac Book Pro. The external drive is a samsung and is formatted to Mac OS Extended (journaled). Time Machine is a standard Apple one and has been working fine for a couple of years

I have a Macbook Pro 13.3" running 10.6.4. I've had this computer for a year now and I have always wondered. Can my 500 GB Toshiba Hard Drive be used for Time Machine and for storing files at the same time?
I've heard about partitioning it, but will that delete the files on there? I dont have enough space on my hard drive to backup my external HD.

My time machine backups to an external drive stopped with a message that the backup could not be done because the drive could not be repaired and needed to be reformatted. Prior to reformatting I copied the TM backup file of 250GB to my desktop. My internal drive is 500GB and this only leaves me with 33GB of available space. I then reformatted the drive with the proper OS extended journaled and GUID partition. The external drive is 500GB. When I try to copy the backup file from the desktop to the reformatted drive the process begins normally with the message "preparing to copy files" but as the preparation process reaches 13,000,000 files it stops with the message "there is not enough sufficient space to copy files" even though it never even got to the actual file transfer. I have tried copying the backups in small batches to the new drive but I get an error message that backup files cannot be modified.Â

I have just installed a Lacie Thunderbolt external drive as I want the speed to access large volumes of photographs. If I configure it as RAID 0 I will need to back up the data on that drive. I have a NAS drive which I already use for Time Machine and which works well. Can Time Machine be configured to include the external drive in the backups to the NAS?

Okay I've had it with VMware Fusion 3, tried Parallels. The graphics capabilities are poor for my standard of work (we use 3DS Max and Maya for intensive modelling during studies). I know my graphics card is quite outdated (ATI X1600) but a lot of the graphics-intensive apps on the Mac side run very smooth.
So I'm going down the Boot Camp route since graphics-wise, it'll use the actual X1600 instead of some virtual one. It's telling me that I need to reformat into Mac OS Journaled or something, and some basic research tells me the only way to achieve this is a fresh install.
My question is, if I perform a Time machine backup onto my external drive, will it restore the applications/settings/files completely how they were, after I reinstall OS X?

Has anyone heard of some third party software used to help simplify the process of restoring or retrieving individual files via TIME MACHINE?
I have some trouble sorting out the navigation window, when it offers choices between KEEP BOTH or RESTORE ORIGINAL. I seem to end up not finding the earlier file. Then a friend said he had heard of software that simplifies this process. I've tried Forum search but no luck yet.

I backed up my iMac desktop at work onto an external hard drive. I can see the files, but they are all locked. When I go to open, I receive the following message "The folder (whatever the name is) can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents." I understand that the system I want to transfer to is different, but is there -- shouldn't there be an override asking for the password.Â
Since I am the administrator to both systems, I would hope I could see the documents that I created.Â

I am aware there are others threads of my problem however they date back years ago and after trying their solutions it still does not work.Â
After using Time Machine to restore my hard drive from a backup, I can't get past the white loading screen with apple logo after system restart during restore process. Ive gone into disk utility and repaired hard drive - it's fine. So I know this is a software glitch. I've also tried resetting SMC & PRAM (whatever those mean). No success and i cannot get past the white loading screen.Â
I'm running Mavericks (latest) on a late 2009 iMac

i'm planning to format my mac book pro, as in, reinstalling leopard and erasing all the files and applications since my mac is getting really slow. I was wondering if the applications ( adobe photoshop, illustrator, final cut etc.) that i backed-up in my time machine will still work on a formatted mac.

I have a question about upgrading the harddisk on my unibody macbook (last year's model). I have done a time machine backup and the macbook is running snow leopard. However, I currently don't have the snow leopard DVD with me, only the leopard DVD that came with the macbook. Can I still do the hard disk upgrade? In other words, can I boot with the leopard DVD, and restore back to snow leopard via time machine or do I need the snow leopard dvd?

Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?

I've had my TIme Capsule for a few years now. Last year I decided to self upgrade the internal HDD to 3TB to actually fit back-ups from my two mac's at home. On my MBP the boot drive failed. It's unfixable unfortunately. how to restore full system on a new HDD on my MacBookPro from TimeCapsule, after boot drive failure?
how to connect the laptop with clean/ empty HDD to MBP and make it boot and install it all from Time Capsule. Moreover, I am not sure how to connect it to Time Capsule, so that it doesn't take 3 days to restore. There is both an ethernet port as well as USB 2.0 one too.Â
That 'old' boot driveis still barely running, I wanted to hand copy at least my iPhoto Library of 110GB in size, but it just keeps crashing, as the file is so big. I mean, I should have it all back-ed up on TimeCapsule,

I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?

I have an external hard drive that I use to watch movies on a Nintendo Wii and some of the movie files are over 7GB, which means when I format the drive to FAT32 I cannot copy the larger files. What are my options for getting around this problem? I have VMware fusion but I cannot easily see my external drive in XP. Is it possible to format the drive in XP and then transfer everything via VMware on XP?

I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.

I have an external hard drive where I backup my Macbook Pro. I recently upgraded to Mavericks and now I can't find old files on time machine. I am looking for a file around a certain date, but no matter what date I look at in time machine - the files and data seem to be the same.Â

I recently erased my Mac partition of my hard drive and got a fresh copy on mavericks. I did this believing I would then be able to restore any important backed-up files later, now all I get in time machine is this:Â Â Â
Everything is greyed out apart from all my files and it stays like this for about five minutes. I know all the data is on the hard drive as it says 250GB of data is on it. Is it just searching through the Hard drive and I need to give it time for the files to show up?

I recently did a clean install and to my horror i can see that Time Machine does NOT back up all my files. It seems to be worst in my music library which fortunately is pretty easy to rebuild do to itunes index.Â
But is there any way to make sure that Time Machine does in fact back up all files?
Or is it just broken and should be avoided?Â

I've been using an external HD as my disc image for Time Machine. Recently, both of my USB ports failed due to a juggling accident with cables connected to the ports. I'd like to send my computer for repair, but'd feel safer if I could backup before that.Â
Through file sharing and an ethernet cable I'm connecting to my old mac and can see the my HD for Time Machine, but how do I configure Time Machine to use that disc?
