OS X :: Produce Occasional "Funk" Built-in Sounds?

Nov 26, 2009

This was already occurring in Leopard and now in SL as well - occasionally, sometimes even more than that, the "Funk" built-in sound comes out of nowhere - at times even several times in a row. Why?

For those who don't know what I'm talking about: it's the sound you hear when you for example get disconnected from iChat or MSN, etc. You can listen to it if you go to System Preferences Sound Sound Effects.

Why does it sometimes occur out of the blue, even with no apps running?

My new MacBook Pro runs perfectly. However, it makes the "funk" alert sound effect on a random basis and it is getting pretty annoying. Why is this happening? I am apparently not the only user experiencing this issue, but they did not identify the sound as being one of the built-in sounds.

IMac :: Which System Produce The Less Heat?

Sep 28, 2010

I'm planning to buy a new iMac in the next week but I'm looking for the one that will produce the less heat so that will make less fan noise. I'm only using it to watch YouTube and play World of Warcraft. Anyone know which one will produce less heat, i3 or the i5 or even the i7. Budget is not a problem. I prefer to pay a little more if I know I will have less fan noise so less heating. Anyone maybe have different model at home or at the office and noticed a difference between all the models ? Maybe it's more a size question between the 21.5 and the 27 inch iMac and less a cpu question ?

MacBook Pro :: Computer Doesn't Seem To Have The Appropriate Soundcard To Produce 5.1 Sound

Sep 4, 2010

I have just purchased a set of logitech x-530 speakers to go with my 2010 MBP. It was a bit of a rushed buy without much research and as such I have realised that the computer doesn't seem to have the appropriate soundcard to produce 5.1 sound (is this correct). At the moment I can only play 2 channel sound leaving the other 3 speakers hanging about. Do I need to buy a external sound card or is there an adaptor

OS X :: System Sounds Via Remote Speakers / Run System Sounds Through Airport Express

Jan 22, 2010

I punch my iTunes music through an Airport Express to a remote set of speakers in the kitchen, which works wonderfully, but I'd like to know if there's a way to run the system sounds through the AE as well. In particular, I listen to Pandora (through a browser) on my laptop, but would love to listen in the kitchen. Any way to do this? System 10.4 I believe...

OS X :: Unable To Run Old Occasional Application

so here's my problem- when I installed Snow Leopard recently, I opted to not include X11 as one of the "optional" components, and now I am unable to run one of my old occasional-use applications (assuming this is because I don't have X11 available). what I need to know is whether it is possible to simply add that onto my current SL install or if I need to do a complete re-install in order to gain access to the additional components again.

Mac Pro :: Start Up Not Reliable & Occasional System Freeze

Jul 22, 2008

My Mac stats: Mac G5 DT/1.8 GHz / OS 10.5.4 / 2.0 GB SDRAM with all current system downloads; I bought this Mac new from Mac connection approximately three years ago. The problems I've been experiencing for many months:

1. Seldom, but occasionally my Mac will fail to start up causing me to do a forced shutdown by holding in the power button. If I delay doing this for a while (a minute or two), the Mac fan comes on rather loud. After a minute or so after the forced shutdown, I try start up again and Mac starts up OK.

2. Seldom, but occasionally my Mac 'freezes'/cursor will not move, causing me do perform the forced shutdown as described above.

3. When I wake Mac from Sleep mode, there is a 'pop/snap' sound which is very audible depending on the volume setting I am using.

NOTE: In case I had any defective SDRAM modules, I replaced them with new high quality ram modules.

Software :: G5 Occasional Boots Up To A Grey Screen

Dec 21, 2008

I did a search but I would like to know why occasionally my 1.8 single G5 fully updated 10.4 boots up to a grey screen with a prompt> message says

to either type mac-boot (does not work) or shut-down (does work)

It happened at any stage since I bought it (second user) years ago since panther 10.3.. It even happens after repair and verify is checked.

It gets a lot of use maybe 6 hours a day so am I about to meet thy doom?

I can usually press the power button and boots ok but recently 2-3 times
to get going

I am considering getting more ram and leopard and want to find out whats causing this issue first?

MacBook :: Occasional Pixelation On Darker Colors?

Mar 21, 2012

I am having a display issue with my MacBook (mid-2007) I am getting occasional pixelation on darker colors. The pixels turn redish/purplish/pinkish...If I press on the screen near the Apple logo (on the top cover) and on the lcd screen I can sometimes get the issue to go away.  When I plug in an external monitor the pixelation does not show up on the external monitor but will stay on the laptop lcd display.  I do have windows also installed and the pixelation shows up in windows as well.... So my thinking that it is likely an issue with the LCD cable or LCD display....

OS X :: Occasional Freeze & Repair Disk Permissions Not Repairing?

Nov 10, 2009

I bought this G5 with consistant startup problems but after replacing the hard drive, installing a fresh operating system, re-seating the ram, checking the Pram battery, etc, it was running fine. I now realize that when trying to repair the disk permissions, the same list keeps coming back even though it shows it's been repaired. Also, occasionally it may freeze or go into kernal panic on startup. If the hard drive is new, does it sound like a possible hardware problem? Does repairing disk permissions involve anything hardware?

IMac :: Strange Noise And Occasional Kernel Panics

Sep 30, 2010

I have a 24" iMac which is just over 12 months old. I noticed recently that occasionally the iMac emits a short burst of grey noise, a sort of hissing which distorts whatever sound is being emitted at the time, (music or whatever). This happens at no particular time and when running no particular program. I have tested it with external speakers and also headphones to confirm that it is not the built in speakers that are causing the problem. The sound burst usually lasts just a couple of seconds. It is not particularly loud and is something I can live with. Also recently the same machine has suffered from occasional kernel panics. Usually after being on for some time. Again at no particular time or process. If I restart the computer it often panics again.

MacBook :: Palmrest Scratches On Unibody / Moisture Or Occasional Sweat?

May 24, 2008

A couple months back, I noticed that the right palmrest of my unibody MacBook had a collection of fine scratches, like someone brushed it with steel wool (it can only be see in certain lighting conditions though). At first I thought that one of my siblings had caused the scratches by wearing a metal bracelet while borrowing my MacBook. However, more recently I've noticed that the left palmrest also now has the same type of scratches.

Since I discovered the first scratches I've been careful to make sure that anyone who uses my MacBook takes off any jewelry that might scratch it so I'm sure that that's not the cause. Otherwise I can only think that maybe the moisture or occasional sweat from my hands has reacted in some way with the aluminum. Seems weird but I don't know what else to think. I didn't think aluminum would wear easily either but could that be it? Any ideas would be appreciated.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Occasional Freeze With Spinning Color Wheel?

Sep 17, 2009

I bought my first uMbp the day Snow Leopard came out. Unfortunately, it was not installed on the uMbp. So upon running the mbp for the first time, I proceeded to install SL.

Now occasionally, maybe a once every other day, whenever I open up a few applications like Word or maybe even a new tab in Firefox, everything would freeze and the spinning color wheel would spin for about 30 or so seconds and everything would resume to normal.

Now I ask, is this normal behavior? I have the 2.26ghz uMBP edition with 2gb of ram.

Should I go ahead and do a clean re-install?

Software :: Occasional Files Not Transferring To External Hard Drive?

Jun 18, 2010

I just bought a 2TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro drive. And I'm passing data (mostly video) onto it from a WD MyBook drive. Both use the Journaled HSF format. I'm on a MacBook Pro (10.5.8).

Problem? Every so often I get a message saying "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data......could not be read or written." And once this happens, the transfer falls into some limbo land it won't copy any more but i can't get rid of the "copy" window showing the halted progress. I actually have to reboot just to begin the transferring process with another folder.

So what goes? In the last case, it was some JPG file that appeared to stop the action, usually it's some kind of video file. But I can't find any rhyme or reason to why this occurs, nor can I find any distinguishing characteristic of the offending files.

Mac Mini :: 2011 Makes Odd Occasional Screeching Noises But Is It Not The Hard Drive?

Mar 25, 2012

my 2011 Mac Mini that I bought back in January is making some strange noises occasionally. High-pitched screeching noises with some clicking. It sounds like it should be the hard drive sounds of doom, but what's odd is that I check the drive using SMARTreporter occasionally, and nothing really changes as far as error statistics, and the drive otherwise works fine. So I'm paranoid, just because I wonder – is it potentially not the hard drive and actually something else entirely? Is this even possible?

Laptops :: Occasional Video Editing - Can Handle Running At Least 5 Of Adobe Programs At Same Time?

Feb 3, 2010

I have done alot of research. I have never owned a mac. I haven't used on since I graduated from school 5-6 years ago for graphics. I have no desire if I do get one to boot xp on it I find the mac os to look more clean(yeah if that makes since) My current laptop is a sony vaio. I mean I know its not strong enough to handle the adobe programs, I can barely run flash cs4 and photoshop cs4 at the same time. My specs on my current sony vaio which I got like 2 and a half years ago is 0.99 gigs of ram/1.60 ghz/ginuwine intel (r) cpu. I know its nothing compared to today and with more work from clients I need something that can handle running at least 5 of the adobe programs at the same time with the internet browser opened and maybe a mp3 player like jet audio playing some tunes to get some serious work done occasional video editing but nothing too crazy..
