Software :: Funk Alert Sound Effect On Random Basis Fom MacBook Pro
Dec 16, 2008
My new MacBook Pro runs perfectly. However, it makes the "funk" alert sound effect on a random basis and it is getting pretty annoying. Why is this happening? I am apparently not the only user experiencing this issue, but they did not identify the sound as being one of the built-in sounds.

I began hearing a sound about every minute that I assume is some kind of alert or notification that something needs attention but I can't determine what it is. It sounds like a single pick of a guitar string. I recently downloaded an upgrade to microsoft office but can't recall if it began right after that or not.

I keep hearing this random sound while using my new MBP. Sounds like a guitar chord being strummed but it's very, very brief. It's happened while in Firefox, iMovie, Findit, etc. What is it?

The "new mail sound" in Mail.app is still very sporadic. When new e-mails arrive in the inbox, the sound signaling that a new message has arrived only works less than half of the time. This was the same problem in 10.5.1. (White 17" iMac C2D 2.0, 3 gb ram) [URL]

I am a new mac user and a sound similar to the "Frog" sound effect keeps playing at random times and with no apparent reason. It just plays and at different times...Sometimes it's every 20 seconds, sometimes more or less. I disabled the sound in System Preferences and it kept playing. I don't know what else to do since i'm new with mac... It's sounding right now, and the only application i have open is safari obviously, and the battery is charging.

What's the default alert sound in snow leopard?
I know it's a dumb question, but I've recently noticed that my mac has been making the most annoying sound quite frequently (i.e. basso). Just wondering what the default was as I'm fairly sure it hasn't always made this sound.

I've been stumped lately as to what in the world is playing a strange sound that i think is a product of Genius. It happens when I:
- Navigate to the iTunes store
- Click on any links in the itunes store, search, account, etc
- when the Genius side bar is out, and tracks change while playing from my Music.
I have gotten it to stop the incessant noise making when tracks change by turning it off and hiding the side bar; but it still makes the noise when i click playlists, my iphone or ipod, other directories, etc.

I have an IMac. When I am in mail and type a word incorrect I get an alert sound. I do not get the red dashed line. I have looked all over Preferences. What am I missing? This is annoying. If I do a manual spell check of a document then it still does not underline misspelled words. I tested it in Textedit as well. No red line under the words.

I realize that I'm opening the door here, but here goes. After my SL install, I'm getting a strange, seemingly random, "ding dong" doorbell noise. Not related to time of day that I can tell. Maybe a coupe of times per hour, maybe less...very strange. The only other thing I did that I'm aware of is installing iStat pro. I have mail running in the background, but it's not any mail noise that I've heard. Any ideas? (I know, I know..."Someone at the door, "My wife calling me, yada yada...).

I searched mroogle for a while and only found one similar thread but there was no answer. I hear a "pop" coming from the front of my Mac Pro case probably 3-4 times a day. It is random and happens whether I have my external speakers on or off. It sounds exactly like it is coming from the crappy internal speaker that the Mac Pro comes with. Anyone having similar issues or know what is going on? Leopard is up-to-date. My second question, which may help narrow down the issue, is how do I disconnect the internal speaker in the Mac Pro? There must be a cord or something inside I can pull to disable the speaker entirely. I don't use it and if it's causing the popping sound, I might as well unplug it.

This annoying bug is driving me crazy when I'm listening to music or watching a youtube video. It seems as if some process is interfering with sound output. I've already tried eliminating the problem by closing all apps, uninstalling perian, quicksilver, to no avail. Is there anyway to see which processes are using sound output at any given time?Â

Where do you sit on the whole Genie Effect vs Scale Effect war that's been raging for the last 8 years? Whilst the Genie wowed me the first time I saw it, I chose Scale Effect pretty much as soon as I got OSX, preferring performance over prettiness. Now, years later, when I occasionally catch it on other peeps machines I think it just looks... tacky. I wonder how many people on here still have it switched on?

My macbook pro came installed with 4GB of RAM but this is slowly being eaten away. Brand new there was 2.77Gb available. Yesterday there was 2.4 and today there is 1.43Gb free. ( I know this as I am using free memory) Nothing is running but Finder and now this browser. Without the browser (Safari) I cannot seem to get more than 1.7Gb free. Something seemnd s to be gobbling up about 1Gb in the background this is not visible to Finder/Force quit

I have a macbook pro mid 2010 model running OS X Lion 10.7.4 with 8GB of RAM (3rd party upgrade), 128 SSD. Up until about 3 weeks ago everything was running fine. Then one day the mac just froze and it's been doing it ever since on an irregular basis. Some days it will happen 10 times in one day, then it won't happen for 3 days. Symptoms:- The mac will freeze completely, no mouse, trackpad or keyboard input, if itunes is playing a song it will just hang and repeat last 1/2 second of the song like a broken record. The only way out of this state is to do a hard reset. ocasionally I get some screen on startup that says I must hold down the power button to restart. It says this in about 5 different languages. Occasionally starting up the mac gets to the grey screen then doesn't move. Again I must do a hard reset.Â
Attempted Fixes: Booting up in safe mode does not fix the issue. It sometimes freezes in safe mode, or gets stuck on the grey screen. Apple Hardware Test - No issues found after running 3 times in extended mode. Verified/Repaired disks - Problem remains. Restored from a time machine backup. I didn't expect this to fix it, and it didn't.Â

I'm aware that with windows computers you need to defragment regularly to keep processes running top notch. However, I read that the macbook runs on fragmentation, thus, defragging is not necessary.
However, I saw in another thread that defragging is also important for a macbook. My question is:
1. Is it necessary to defragment?
2. If so, what is a good program for defragmenting on a macbook?
