IMac :: How Do I Diagnose Occasional Failure To Power Up
Jan 4, 2010
Have a white iMac (2Ghz Core Duo, 20" screen). It has started misbehaving slightly: it usually takes two or more tries to start from off, and has to have a hard restart if I've let it go to sleep on its own.If I have made it sleep myself, by pressing the power button, it always comes back, but it refuses to do so if I let it sleep on its own.My local reseller suggests that it may be a logic board fault: I'll have to pay ?70 to diagnose this and, if that's the case, the repair is uneconomic, meaning I've also wasted

I left my iMac on overnight last night to finish downloading some stuff. I woke up and all our clocks are flashing, so we must've had a blackout. Anyway, I went to check the progress of my downloads, and the iMac was off. I pushed the power button and nothing happened. No fan noise, HDD noise, nothing. I've been trying for almost two hours now and nothing is working.

My IMac crashes sometimes very suddenly, like in a power failure. It doesn't force quit or shut down, it just goes like somebody pulled the plug. It's usually possible to start it up again after 30minutes or an hour. The plug and lead seem to be fine. I tested it on another mac. The obvious suspicion would be overheating, but how can that be caused so suddenly (and how can I fix it)? It's an IMac Intel core duo, 20", 2 ghz, 2gb ram from 2006. I'm running Mac OS X (10.4.11) 2006.

While installing windows 7 via bootcamp tonight, I suffered a power failure a minute or two into installation. Upon reboot, I have only a black screen with flashing curse. I have attempted to reboot in safe mode, recovery mode and diagnostic mode, but I think the machine is not recognizing the keyboard.

a friend recently gave me a g5 power mac that had some issues, and the failure was described as intermittant. The machine supposedly would work properly when booted and start freezing up after time, but if turned on the next day it would work properly for some time. I assumed it was an overheating issue, but apperently there is more to the picture. I have tried booting the machine quite a few times and the display always reads no signal. The machine sounds as if it were booting normally, but there is not output. At first I assumed it was my display cable, which was a DVI-D single link, however the DVI-D dual link cable leads to the same result. Is it nessicary to have a DVI-I cable? None of the error LEDs light up on the motherboard. After doing some hunting I haven't found anyone with the same issue, but I am wondering if I should assume the graphics card is dead. What steps do I need to take to isolate a graphics card failure in a power mac g5?

I've been playing a bit of Poker using the PKR application (It's a cider port from what I've seen). I'm finding that on my iMac (and not my MacBook Pro), after playing for a while the graphics go a little bit screwy then it freezes the entire system. To try and diagnose the problem I want to see if it's the app or the GPU which is causing the problem. Does anyone know how I can stress test the GPU?
What's odd is that even though the app seems to be very CPU and GPU heavy, I don't really notice any fan noise from the iMac. I'm just concerned that it may be overheating.

I have a G5 Power Mac dual 1.8 running 10.5.8. It powers a radio stations automation system. I have it set to power on after a power failure but for some reason it will not power on. I have to come t the station and reboot the system manually.

I have a 24" iMac which is just over 12 months old. I noticed recently that occasionally the iMac emits a short burst of grey noise, a sort of hissing which distorts whatever sound is being emitted at the time, (music or whatever). This happens at no particular time and when running no particular program. I have tested it with external speakers and also headphones to confirm that it is not the built in speakers that are causing the problem. The sound burst usually lasts just a couple of seconds. It is not particularly loud and is something I can live with. Also recently the same machine has suffered from occasional kernel panics. Usually after being on for some time. Again at no particular time or process. If I restart the computer it often panics again.

G4 733 D/A , 10.4.11. This morning there was a few second power failure according to my wife. Ther G4 shut down from the power failure. I didn't have "restart after power failure" selected in the Energy Saver prefs. I restarted the G4 when zi got home and after I was done with it, selected SLEEP from the menu. The G4 wouldn't respond to sleep. I logged out and tried SLEEP from another user acc't and from the login screen. I then went into the Energy Saver prefs, made sure everything was as I wanted ( 5 min display sleep, 10 min HD sleep, and "put disk to sleep whenever possible". I then rebooted and sleep still wouldn't function.

why i have to unplug the power cable from the back of my imac after every power failure at my home to get the imac to boot up. I've tried resetting the surge protecter and unplugging there. However, the only option is to unplug the cord from the back of the monitor/imac before it will boot up.Â

I have a PowerMac G5 computer, running OSX Version 10.4.11. Up until yesterday, the computer performed flawlessly. Suddenly, yesterday, I get a message from Firefox (the browser I usually use), telling me that my Flash Player had been disabled because I did not have the most up-to-date version of Adobe Flash Player. When I investigated, I found out that the newest version was NOT compatible with my computer. So I tried reinstalling the most recent version of Adobe Flash Player that IS compatible and have had no success. When I go in to System Preferences and click on the Adobe Flash Player pane (under other), I get a message reading "could not load Adobe Flash Player." Someone out there must know how to handle this. I'm not in a position to purchase a new computer, and I desperately need Flash Player for some of the websites I use quite often.

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 15 inch, and the Messages application has been installed and functioning well for the past year. A few hours ago, my MacBook ran out of battery and died on me. This caused a number of applications to function incorrectly, however, after a restart all of the applications EXCEPT Messages work correctly. Now whenever I start up the messages app and try to send a message to one of my contacts, their name appears in red and I receive a message that says "###-###-#### is not registered with iMessage." This occurs even though the contacts DO have iMessage and were working in the past. None of the contacts work currently.Â
I tried signing out of Messages, restarting my computer, restarting iMessage from my phone, deleting my plist file, but none of these seem to alleviate the issue.

I'm going to be setting up a dedicated server on a LAN soon. It's only going to be accessed by a handful of computers, all of which will be controlled by the client. Based on cost and complexity of other options, we've decided on a normal Mini, rather than a Mini Server or an Xserve.
The one feature that concerns us, which is included with the Xserve but not on either Mini, is the redundant power supply. We would like to avoid downtime in the event of a power supply failure. Are there any third party options to this?
(A battery backup with a limited run time would not be sufficient.)

I have a 2009 2.26 Mac Pro with 4x4Gb Apple/Hynix RAM and 4x1Gb Apple/Hynix and Samsung RAM. I have been having occasional kernel panics (once/twice a week). I tested the 4x4Gb with memtest in single user mode and got a kernel panic with all 4 sticks in. However, when testing the modules individually or in pairs, they all pass memtest (at least 3x each). But testing all 4 causes a panic every time. Is there something wrong with the motherboard or RAM board, or could it still be the RAM? Should I be trying the RAM in 3s instead of 4s?Â

My son has a 2010 iMac and it crashes about once a week. I've serviced it with Disk Warrior twice. The first time it found a problem with the Volume map, but the second time nothing. How to read the Console crash report? As this is a total crash, I can't find any reports under the various application tabs that fit the dates in question.

My Mac is OS X version 10.5.8
It powers down constantly and I was advised to check the box that restarts it automatically after power failure in order begin to ascertain what the problem is.
I cannot find the darned box to check!
I looked in the "energy saver" category where my computer tells me the box is, but there's no option anywhere to be seen.

The string of problems I've encountered started a few days ago. I normally let my imac go to sleep by itself but, on this occasion I told it to sleep via the apple menu. When I awoke the imac the screen was frozen. No mouse movement, no clock movement, nothing. At this point I turned the power off and back on again. It didn't get past the white screen (before the gray with apple logo). I then tried resetting the PRAM, booting in safe mode, and booting from my os disc. Nothing worked.
After several tens of tries it magically booted. It stayed active long enough for me to back up all my data (transferring at least 100GB), reformat the hdd, reinstall leapord, transfer data back, and use it until I let it sleep again.

I need your expertise in figuring out whether my 12" PB G4 is worth salvaging. I tripped over the cord a few nights ago and it came crashing to the ground, landing open in a V. I was sure the screen's hinge would be damaged, but it wasn't, and the screen appears to be a little blurry in the middle, but avoided catastrophic damage. Here's what happens, though. When I turn it on, it loads, though it takes 20 mins to get up and running. Then it loads my background picture, but nothing on my desktop. And the toolbar at the bottom shows up, but if you click an icon, the computer does the spinning wheel for about 5 mins and then the spinning wheel disappears and you're still just looking at the background picture.I'm really upset at the prospect of having lost all of my files. At the same time, this computer is 4+ years old, so it seems silly to spend $500 on getting it fixed. Does anyone recognize what might be wrong here -- is it something I might be able to repair on my own? Or that could be done cheaply at a repair shop? Or is this poor laptop finally d-e-a-d ?

I have an IMac OS X 10.5.8. It's about 4 years old. Recently I subscribed to a DSL through AT&T and purchased an At&T modem. The AT&T tech support was unable to help me set up my wireless connection. My AirPort in on and I have a full bar signal. My network has a check next to it. When I turn the AirPort on, it automatically comes up with the network. There is no way to remove the check next to the network unless I turn the AirPort off.
The issue comes when I disconnect my ethernet cable. I loose my internet connection. The AT&T tech support told me to contact Apple but my computer is older then 90 days.
Also, I have an I phone that does the same thing. My wifi connection works everywhere I go with no issues but will not work in my home. All the wifi bars are up but it says connection failed.
