I can not deselect mute all computer sounds on my Imac with Lion I went into preference and for output the only thing I can select is headphones is there away to get the built in speakers back on this drop down list?

I noticed that my system stopped making system (i.e. Mac OS X) sounds for some reason. Sounds from applications are fine. I checked and unchecked the "play user interface sound effects" check box in the preference panes to no effect.

Today, I got home and turned on my iMac 21.5 inch. On a typical day, I'd here the "BONG" and then everything would be normal. Today, my fans, or something inside the computer, sounded like it was going crazy. I have no idea what's wrong.
My mac is making very loud sounds. Hard drive or fan. comming from the bottom right hand corner.

The sound system on my iMac keeps chirping like a cricket. This happens every few minutes and occurs both on internal and external speakers. It started a few weeks ago and I have made no major changes in the meantime. What is this and how do I make it stop?

Can someone who's 'up' on imacs give me a steer here.At the beginning of the week, with only a 14 days to go on my 3 year Applecare warranty, I noticed a grey streaky 'misting' on the screen when it was turned off. It was really quite bad. Called Applecare, who got their servicing company to collect it, screen replaced with no problems. Got it back today, new screen, looks great.
So far so good. Except that the fan is now whirling around and making an incredible noise after about 10 minutes of the machine being turned on. I'd say it's around 5 times as loud (or hyperactive) as it was before I sent it off for a new screen. One of the things I turned to the imac for was it's quietness, so this is worse for me than a misty screen, to be honest. Sounds like a hairdryer.
Put it this way: I often listen to music late at night, very low, but now the fan would drown out the sound of the music. Called Applecare, who are going to get it collected again, but from what I've read in these forums this evening (& I'm no expert) it could be a software related problem (temperature controls and all that...) I'm not sure that the guy I was talking to at Applecare today quite understood what I was trying to explain, and said it was definitely a hardware problem. I want to call Applecare back on Monday before the mac's collected again to just make sure it has to be carted off again, with a bit of back up info from anybody who might help here.

new imac but for some reason, the notification sounds won't come through. We can't hear them at all.
Downloaded twitter app via app mac store and we set up mail correctly.
Also, went in to preferences on the twitter app and selected that we wanted the notification sound. we did the exact same on the mail app.
But still, no sounds. And yes, we do have the volume up
This week my Mail sound started going off for all types, incessantly, including receipt of the much Junk filtered out of the Inbox into Junk. Formerly I received alert sounds only for new Inbox mail. I have unchecked the "Play sounds for other actions" in Mail Preferences which does no good.

hi there, a strange problem I think here, or maybe not...
when I use a torrent client... when port 52025 that works great download full kb of my conection BUT the hd sounds a lot every kb sounds sounds sounds... I dont why, when downlaod a simple .dmg with safari dont sounds any... why torrents make work a lot the HD.
if I use other port dont sound but donwload are really sucks 20kb or minus.

View 4 Replies View RelatedOne of the front fans on my early '08 Mac Pro sounds like it's grinding. When I first boot up the fans are whisper quiet as they should be, but give it a few minutes and there is a distinct grinding sound and I've narrowed it to the top fan on the front of the case. When the system is turned of, the fan whines to a stop. Is there any way to lubricate the fan to solve this? The access doesn't seem very easy, and I'd rather not have to mess with the case assembly. Or do I have to pay some kid at the apple store a hundred or so to do it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading my MBP to Snow Leopard over this weekend, I have lost some of my system sounds. Specifically, I don't have any sounds for sent mail or when you empty the trash.
I've scoured over several forums where this problem is highlighted, but none of their fixes have worked for me. For instance: I've checked my 'Sound' preference pane to make sure sound effects are on; I've restarted my machine; I've checked the hidden preferences using Tinker Tool; and, repaired permissions through Disk Utility.
Has anyone got any solutions to this problem? Is anyone else experienceing the same issue?
Is there a way to access the sounds of Leopard i.e. error sounds trash can sounds mounting sounds etc.

When it started up, it made a very odd sound that was similar to a CD/DVD being processed or ejected.I thought maybe it was a one time thing, but since restarting it a few times, it's made the same sound each time.Is this normal? I've never heard it before. It's like there's a CD or DVD in there, but of course there isn't.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a iMac g5 and have problems with MSN messenger. Since about 1 week, the sound alert when a contact in my list comes online, doesn't sound any longer. All the other sound alerts still work normally and all the alerts in MSN preference are activated and work when trying them out. I just did a complete reinstall of Leopard and only did the system update and installing the msn messenger and still, that same problem is there. Why is this happening? Is this a bug in msn that started recently?
