MacBook Pro :: Longer Boot Time After HD And Ram Upgrade?

Apr 12, 2010

i just upgraded my MBP13 with 4gb and a 500 Hitachi drive. the process went smoothly. i didnt quite understand the time machine OSX reinstall process, i was mostly afraid of having to re-install every other programs. So i went the easy way and downloaded super duper to clone my drive and did the switch.

it use to take around 25-30sec to boot. now it takes more like 45+. I also noticed a few setting had changed after the upgrade. namely, little snitch (i think..) was opening a window showing me inbound transfers, my desktop image was reset and other small things like that. is it all normal? is there anything i should do to speed the boot time?

another note, there is a cd in the drive at boot, but its always there as it was when the boot time was faster. i just dont have anything to put it in so it seems like the best option to always keep it there.

MacBook Air :: Boot Time 2x Longer Since New EFI/SMC Firmware 1.1 ?

Dec 19, 2008

I have a Rev B 1.86 SSD.

Can someone else please use a watch and post your times?

BEFORE the 1.1 firmware update

10 seconds from power button to apple logo - 17 more seconds to load to my desktop = 27 seconds

After 1.1 update

45 seconds from power button to apple logo - 15 more to load my desktop = 60 seconds

I just used a stopwatch 2 times - same results....

UPDATE: tried SMC Reset - same result.

It takes really longer time to boot up. Eventually it gets boot, but i am unable to access Mail app. Sometimes the booting is faster. In this case, i can use the Mail app. I tried to shut down, restart many times, but the boot up takes longer time or even lesser.

MacBook Pro :: 10.9.4 Upgrade Locked Out Many Of Files - Can No Longer Login To Network Accounts

Sep 10, 2014

I upgraded to 10.9.4. Now, I can no longer log in to "network accounts". I am lucky in that my school district gave me administrator access, so I am currently logging in that way. Big problem though- the permissions on EVERY SINGLE FILE AND FOLDER are set to read only, so any time I want to access anything, I have to change the permissions on the folder/document. I have tried doing this en masse to no avail. How to log in to my original account so I can function the way I did before 10.9.4 hit.

MacBook Pro :: Can No Longer Boot From Hard Drive

Mar 27, 2012

I wanted to get my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6.8) to boot from a CD, which it did (turns out CD was faulty and didn't work). In order to do this I went to the System Options and selected boot from Disk option.

Only problem is now my Mac will only boot from a CD and not from the hard drive! How do I get it to boot from the hard drive again?

OS X :: Certain CDs No Longer Work Since Upgrade

Mar 9, 2009

I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger, and am now having a problem reading certain CD-ROMs. Each month, I receive a CD from a guitar instruction site. When I was using Tiger, I had no problems reading any of these CDs, but, since the upgrade, I've become unable to open the most recent few. They aren't even recognized by the computer, and are ejected automatically, although they work perfectly on two other Macs running the same version of Leopard. Older CDs from the same company still play fine. My drive is a Matshita DVD-R UJ-857D.

OS X :: Upgrade 10.4.11 To 10.5.8 - Scanner No Longer Visible

Dec 8, 2009

I upgraded my PowerMac Dual G5 2 GHz from OS 10.4.11 to 10.5.8. Now the Mac can't see my SCSI scanner (Epson Exprerssion 836XL). It doesn't show up under the system profiler.

Before upgrading, I cloned my 10.4.11 installation. When I boot from the clone, I can use the scanner with no problems. So the hardware is working and connected properly.

What is there about the Leopard system I can do to help it recognize the scanner?

The problem has survived system restarts, including restarts after complete shutdown.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Time Machine May Display 'Preparing' For A Longer Time

Jun 21, 2012

None of the issues discussed in the apple support page on this issue seem to apply to me (except one below regarding not completing the 'prepare for backup'). It still takes way too much time (a night is not enough) to prepare for time machine backup, even though there was a backup recently, and it is not a one-time event but a recurring problem, and there are no big changes to my files or disks. And of course because most days it does not complete the backup before I have to leave to work, the condition on 'not interrupting the backup' cannot be respected. This looks like plain poor design. The only thing that helps is to connect my laptop directly to the Time Machine by Ethernet but it is very inconvenient.

MacBook Pro :: 15" No Longer Recognizes Primary Display After Boot Camp/Linux Installation?

Mar 9, 2012

So my old 15" early 2006 Macbook Pro (1,1) no loger recognizes the primary display. I can use an external monitor just fine, but when I go into System Profiler, it's like my primary display disappeared. I reinstalled Snow Leopard, reset PRAM, NVRAM, repaired my permissions, tried to update my mac, but litterally nothing I have tried has worked.

It started when I tried to install both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. After completing the Windows 7 installation, I restarted my computer and it just hung on the Apple logo. I could feel the fans begining to spin really fast and it felt like my laptop was on fire. I restarted my computer, let it cool down, and it hung at the Apple logo again. I rebooted it a final time, and nothing. Black screen. No backlight or image...nothing.

ITunes :: 10.6 Upgrade - Library No Longer Getting Recognized

May 23, 2012

Well subsequnt a recent upgrade to iTunes 10.6, my Library is not recognized. I have tried various ways of loading the xml file, and it just comes up as a blank/ new Library. The other day, for no reason I could tell, I launched iTunes and it created a new Library and will not open my usual Library. This problem did not exactly coincide neatly with updating to 10.6 either, so frankly I have no idea what happened. So, maybe I could restore using iTunes 10.5. But I can't find any download links for 10.5. Is there somewhere to download previous versions of iTunes? Or do they remove anything and everything for previous versions with each update?

OS X Mavericks :: MacBook Air Won't Boot After Upgrade

Jun 25, 2014

Just got my MacBook Air back from a certified Apple repair shop - I'd had maintenance done, including upgrading to Mavericks (10.9.3). Plugged it in, started it up and never got beyond the startup screen - Apple logo and spinning wheel after 5, 8, 10 minutes...

Tried starting in Safe Mode, but once the load bar progresses about 1/5 of the way, the bar disappears, the wheel spins and then the screen goes black.

MacBook Pro :: Lion Freeze On Boot After Ram Upgrade

Apr 25, 2012

I have a mid-2010 13" Macbook Pro. I wanted to upgrade to 8G of ram so I bought this: url...When it arrived in the mail I installed it and booted the laptop. The apple logo comes up, the spinner starts spinning and then after awhile freezes. I figured that I recieved bad RAM so I sent it back to apple and they sent me new memory. I installed the new ram and the same thing happened again. Booting in verbose mode (Apple-V) doesn't give anything useful. This time I decided to run memory tests. I booted into single user mode (which sees 8G of memory and works fine) and ran memtest overnight. It ran 6 or 7 passes without finding any memory errors. My next plan is to try to my DVD reinstall/repair the OS to see if that will help but I don't want to do that because I would have to downgrade to Snow Lepoard and then reinstall Lion and that takes long enough to try to avoid.

OS X :: 7200RPM Drive Taking Longer To Boot Than Old 5400?

Apr 22, 2009

I used CCC to clone my Hitachi 250gb 5400 rpm macbook pro drive to a Hitachi 320gb 7200 rpm drive.

I installed it myself (it's not hard to do at all took 20 minutes) and everything went fine but it seems as though before I see the Apple logo appear, my MacBook Pro now sits at a blank gray screen right when I turn it on for 10-15 seconds longer than it ever did prior to this upgrade.

Another interesting tidbit is that even though I made an exact clone of the drive with CCC, it seems that ALL of my LittleSnitch rules were dumped as LS asked me to verify everything all over again for MobileMe, Safari, FireFox, SimplifyMedia, Time.Apple.com, etc... Not sure why that happened.

I also noticed that on my original HDD it says "Apple Firmware Version" on the HDD label, is this why the new drive takes longer to boot? Does apple have a special firmware for it's drives that it's sourcing from Hitachi?

Windows On Mac :: Boot Camp No Longer Sees WINXP64 Install?

Feb 11, 2009

I'm using an early 2008 Mac Pro with plenty of RAM and an 8800GT graphics card.

I used Boot Camp to make a partition on the main system drive, put Vista 64 on there. It worked fine, except a lot of the software I need doesn't work in Vista 64.

So I put a new drive in there (a WD Raptor) And installed XP 64 on there manually - not using the Boot Camp Assistant, just booting from the CD, selecting the drive, and so on.

After getting all the drivers to work, the system ran really well. It was amazing! However, the Vista partition stopped showing up when I option-started the machine. No big deal, however, because I was no longer using it.

Yesterday, I used Boot Camp Assistant to remove the older Vista 64 partition.

The next time I option-started the machine, the XP 64 partition was gone. I only had the option to start from the OS X system drive.

The drive is also not available as a startup disk option in System Preferences.

The drive is still in the machine, all the files seem intact.

I tried removing the OS X drive, leaving only the XP 64 drive, this left me with zero options when I option-started.
