Mac Mini :: Won't Boot After RAM Upgrade
May 21, 2012
I just recently bought 8gs of Corsair Mac RAM, links at the bottom. So they I changed the RAM sticks, not the first time I've upgraded RAM, just like I have every other time. But after switching the RAM the mac won't boot. Tried swapping back the old ones and still nothing.

I was upgrading rame in my 2011 mac mini and removed the first module without incident but upon removing the second module the clip on the left broke and upon trying to reseat the 2 new ram modules so I could at least boot my mac the lower one is loose (which I expected but upon inserting the top one the clips did not grip it and not they are both stuck loosely in the mac mini which will not boot.Â
After having installed rame in a PC laptop and my mac ro I have had 2 successful ram upgrades so was not impressed to find that the ram upgrade process in the mini has some really bad clips.Â
So now what do I do and to complicate things even further there is some stuff on the mini I need.

i accidentally hit the power switch on the wall during an upgrade (might even have been a firmware upgrade, I didn't really look at what was going on). Anyway, now it hangs on the silver Apple logo screen with a spinny wheel on reboot. It's only 3 months old, it's the $599 model.Â
What to do? I see that you can download firmware restoration disks but they appear to be limited to earlier versions of the Mac mini.

Just installed the 8gb RAM kit in my mini and WOW everything is SO much faster! Literally took 2 minutes for the upgrade, bottom cover off, old ram out, new ram in, and cover back on. Couldn't have been easier!
Here is the kit I bought from OWC:

Absolutely no problems booting up or anything. So far very happy!

Okay I'm writing this for anyone who feels the same as I did about doing this and is unsure whether or not to do it. Maybe it can help someone
Last night I finally got round to upgrading my mac mini to 4GB of crucial memory using a 1.5" putty knife, mini screw driver set, pizza cutter, bright LED torch and towel. And boy was I pooooooping it during the whole process!
But don't let that put you off as if you do your research, take your time, double check everything you do, then double check again, have all the tools by your side and you are not a clumsy oath then you should complete it with out any problems.
My main concern is how much pressure you have to put on parts to remove them, compared to how easy they seem to come off on the vids I've watched. And how easy they seem to put the frame and memory in and out. As this is certainly not the case for a newbie!
The main outer casing for a start takes a lot of force and you are not quite sure how far down to put the putty knife. You think your going to damage the clips or case, but it seem really robust, you just have to trust it and do a little bit a a time working your way around the base.
The 2 small antennas seemed like they were going to snap on removal, really where attached well. One more than the other which caused me some stress
The bigger corner antenna, comes of okay, just don't squeeze the clips in to hard, as I did and managed to bend one in to much so when re-fiting I had to bend it out so it locked into place.
The next bit - the screws... make sure you have plenty of small screw drivers, all the ones I had were not small enough, so had to make a quick trip up to the DIY store half way through the job! The screws are impossible to get out unless you have a magnetic screwdriver, I could only get one out, left the other 3 un-done but still in the frame
The ribbon cable came of easy taking my time with a small screwdriver. After all this the whole frame came out giving me access to the ram - this took some jigging, be careful of the antenna wires and the ribbon.
Ram came out easy, but the 2 sticks I put in were not so easy. I could not see exactly where they had to go in, and took some force to get them in. Think it's all about getting the right angle though.
Everything went back pretty easy apart from the frame, this was a bit awkward getting it to fit exactly, but eventually it popped in to place.
I now have 4GB and intend to do the same process again when I can decide on what hard drive to buy to replace the 120GB internal + I am going to do my brothers.
Overall I am very happy I have saved my self money doing it myself, and learnt about the inside of a mac mini.

I have a 2009 Mac Mini 2.26 with the stock 160 Gb hardrive. I'm quickly running out of space and want to put in a bigger drive. I also like to have a faster drive, since I think it would make a difference in Photoshop and just make the mini feel a bit snappier.I originally was going to but in a 7200 drive such as the WD Scorpio black, but then I got concerned about the additional noise. I really like how quiet the Mini is. Therefore I started looking into 5400 drives. I even considered putting in a sdd plus an external am not sure it is worth the extra expense.
I have been looking though the forum but still can't figure out which option to go with.My specific questions are.
1. Would a 7200 drive be significantly faster than a 5400 drive?
2. Would a 7200 drive be noticeable nosier that a 5400 drive?
3. Which specific drives are recommended for speed and quietness.

iMac intel core duo...
My computer had 1GB of RAM, so I just bought a 2GB RAM card. When I installed both cards together i can hear the hard drive start up and then nothing, no boot up, just a black screen and the "sleep" light is just solid. I know both cards are fine because I tested each by themselves and they both started up and worked well, its only when they are both in at the same time does it do this. also both slots work because i tested both of them! I tried to do the PRAM reset and it doesnt work, and I tried to do it with one card in and then reset and then shutdown and install the 2nd card and still nothing. Please give me some advice, i am soooo frustrated!!

I tried searching up this question but could not find any results.
I was watching the youtube video on the ram upgrading and I noticed that the person took out 2x 1GB ram pieces and put in 2x 2GB ram pieces.
The ram I purchased is 1x 4GB piece and I am just wondering if there would be any drawbacks for using 1x 1GB and 1x 4GB in my set-up. I remember that for PC, it's best if the RAM is the same size/speed/manufacturer. My newly purchased ram is from OWC.
Additionally, if I decide to only have 1x 4GB left in there, does it matter which slot I put it in? There are two slots that are empty and I'm not sure if there is a primary slot or secondary slot.

So today i was upgrading my new mini and everything goes great (or so it seems) it boots up just fine and then i try and play a song..nothing, no sound at all the volume changer is gone and everything. I take it back apart to take a look to see if i just missed something and i see this little wire dangling from where the HD is but i don't know where it goes or if it has anything to do with my problem. So if anybody has any ideas about this let me know.

I still don't see what the excitement is about going to the trouble of risking a Mini upgrade. It's supposed to be non user-serviceable anyway.

I am thinking of buying a mac mini with these specs
1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo Processor
2GB 667 MHz DDR2 RAM
Intel GMA 950 Graphics
250GB Hard Disk Drive
4 USB Ports
DVI Connector
I am wondering if I could upgrade the processor to i5 and the HD to a 1TB because I plan to use it for basic movie editing and I am on a $600-$800 budget (the computer cost $250)

For some time I have been wanting to upgrade my G4 Mac Mini. So yesterday Amazon sent me an ad for $30.00 off. Not much but enough to get me to order. Now all my main computers are Intel two core jobbers. Now what can the old G4 1.42 Ghz mini be used for without having to buy another monitor, keyboard and mouse?

Just got my MacBook Air back from a certified Apple repair shop - I'd had maintenance done, including upgrading to Mavericks (10.9.3). Plugged it in, started it up and never got beyond the startup screen - Apple logo and spinning wheel after 5, 8, 10 minutes...Â
Tried starting in Safe Mode, but once the load bar progresses about 1/5 of the way, the bar disappears, the wheel spins and then the screen goes black.Â

Hi guys, just wondering could I upgrade my mac mini 2.4 processor to a Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.66GHz Socket 775 1333FSB 4MB L2 Cache? I saw it for a good price and it's got me thinking. Not planning on it right now coz it's pretty fast after I upgraded it's ram to 4gb just thinking for the future, if not what's the best upgrade I could give it?

I upgraded the RAM in my 2006 Mac Mini 1.83 a year or so ago. Thing worked fine until the other day. I purchased Applecare for this Mini in case anything went wrong. Something finally did-system will NOT boot, nor even power on, but the cooling fan runs at high speed continuously when the Mini is plugged in. Took it to a "genius" bar, and the guy was THE BIGGEST ASS ever. He FLIPPED THE HELL OUT when he found out I had opened the case. Took him 20 minutes to hunt it down, but he finally found some terms and conditions that state moding a Mini voids the warranty. I have had many people tell me, including Apple resellers, that adding RAM to a mini does NOT void the warranty. So anyway, I guess I am mostly pissed because the IDIOT DOLT at the "genius" bar knew less about computers than my 11 year old son and was determined to not give me the time of day because I had "sinned" and gone against Almighty Apple's wishes. The JERK had no interest in helping trouble shoot once he found out I opened the box. ALL HE DID was plug the stupind thing in, never even LOOKED inside it. Just put the top back on and plugged it in. I wish I could get the mini fixed, but they wanted nearly $400 for out of warranty service to which I politely declined. It had become a spare computer anyway. I own FIVE minis, TWO Macbooks, TWO iPhones, and at least FOUR iPods. I have spent in excess of $5,000 on Apple stuff in the last 18 months........

I have a question concerning memory upgrades on the Mac-Mini 1.83GHz C2D. Some specs state that the 2GBs of DDR2 PC5300 I currently have installed is the maximum memory that the system can handle. There are other sites, though, that state that the system can actually support up to a 4GB kit of the same memory. Has anyone out there had any experience with upgrading to 4GB

Would my 2GB Core i5 Mini benefit massively from a huge memory upgrade? i currently have it processing photos and videos and music while i'm away and remote into it. It very slow on remote but I don't know why that is. Slow as in almost unusable. Would the memory help it? speed it up? speed up my access to it?

I recently upgraded my mac mini from 2gb ram to 8gb ram and noticed that when the mac goes to sleep and the tv ( through hdmi wire) goes into standby that the mac mini will not send a signal to the tv anymore to wake up the tv from standby when I need it too from tapping on keyboard or moving mouse. At first I thought it was because of a software upgrade on the mac mini but when I switched back the ram to 2gb the mac mini will send the signal to wake the tv. I hav already reset pram setting and the usual things that everyone has mentioned in other posts . This seems to be a major flaw in apple deisgn unless they have a fix . I am stuck with my 2gb ram now in the mac which doesnt even have any speed . the only way I can use the 8gb ram is if i turn the mac on and off everytime I want to use it , as this is the only way to wake the tv with the 8gb ram inside as it doesnt wake the tv from sleep. This totally contradicts what apple say in their manual aswell, they say not to power down your mac if your using it everyday just put it to sleep which wont help me in my case . So at the end of this rant my only two options are to continue to use 8gb ram and have to power on and off mac everytime to wake the tv or use my 2gb ram which makes the mac run really slow as 2gb is not enough but hey aleast my tv will come back on from sleep mode . So I have XP installed on my 27" iMac, and that's is cool news. I also have a windows 7 professional upgrade disk, that bootcamp won't recognize. I would just blow away that partition and put 7 on. I don't care for any of my data on the XP install, I just want to get 7 on there with an upgrade disk.
How can I boot from the upgrade disk inside XP? Or is there another way?
If I try and install from inside XP it tells me it can only be done (configuration sets) from Windows PE (Preinstall enviroment)
as in I need to be booted from the disk.
How do I accomplish this? I also have a 2009 late iMac, which means that the video drivers don't work out correctly, but I already remedied that with making the video driver usb drive that fixes the issue. I just need to figure out how to get to the point to install.

i just upgraded my MBP13 with 4gb and a 500 Hitachi drive. the process went smoothly. i didnt quite understand the time machine OSX reinstall process, i was mostly afraid of having to re-install every other programs. So i went the easy way and downloaded super duper to clone my drive and did the switch.
it use to take around 25-30sec to boot. now it takes more like 45+. I also noticed a few setting had changed after the upgrade. namely, little snitch (i think..) was opening a window showing me inbound transfers, my desktop image was reset and other small things like that. is it all normal? is there anything i should do to speed the boot time?
another note, there is a cd in the drive at boot, but its always there as it was when the boot time was faster. i just dont have anything to put it in so it seems like the best option to always keep it there.

I have a mid-2010 13" Macbook Pro. I wanted to upgrade to 8G of ram so I bought this: url...When it arrived in the mail I installed it and booted the laptop. The apple logo comes up, the spinner starts spinning and then after awhile freezes. I figured that I recieved bad RAM so I sent it back to apple and they sent me new memory. I installed the new ram and the same thing happened again. Booting in verbose mode (Apple-V) doesn't give anything useful. This time I decided to run memory tests. I booted into single user mode (which sees 8G of memory and works fine) and ran memtest overnight. It ran 6 or 7 passes without finding any memory errors. My next plan is to try to my DVD reinstall/repair the OS to see if that will help but I don't want to do that because I would have to downgrade to Snow Lepoard and then reinstall Lion and that takes long enough to try to avoid.
