OS X :: SuperDrive Only Reads Disk On Second Attempt
Apr 8, 2009
My MBP has been acting up lately. It seems that whenever I put a DVD into my drive, it sounds like the computer is reading it or attempting to and then spits it back out. When I put the dvd back in a second time, it reads it just fine and mounts it on desktop without any problems. Doesnt seem to matter what kind of dvd it is; game, movie, etc. The SuperDrive only reads it when I put the disk in the second time. I'm running 10.5.6.

I have a mac pro 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon box. Tonight I replace my 8 g memory sticks with 16g memory sticks. After rebooting my super drive will no longer mount any disk that is put in the tray. I close the tray then after several seconds the try pops back open. I have tried cleaning the drive with a cleaning disk, it does not work. No sound comes from the drive, in other words I don't hear it attempt to spin up. The super drive shows up in disk utility and under Disc Burning in system information.

I am trying to upgrade my Dad's mac mini to Snow Leopard and have encountered a problem. When I insert the Leopard disk I cannot get it to read the disk, the box comes up as if I have inserted a blank DVD. I have also tried inserting ilfe09 disk and have the same problem. The drive does appear to be making an odd bleaping. I have tried resetting the PRAM and cannot get it to bleap?

I've got a MacBook that is a couple of years old now. I'm trying to burn about a dozen copies of some audio from a conference I ran. I've tried burning directly from iTunes and by using Toast. In both cases it's hit and miss. Sometimes I'll get one or two copies burned, and then an error message will come up saying that the disk can't be burned. The error messages are different with both programs, but in either case, I'm stuck. The MacBook is no longer under warranty, so I'd like to avoid having to take it in to be repaired. Could it be something as simple as needing to be cleaned?

I shoved a mini-cd into my MacBook pro's SuperDrive and, when nothing happened, used another dick to push it in further. It doesn't show on the desk top and I'm at a loss as to how to retrieve it. ( yes, I know this was a numb move.)

The last time I tried to insert a disk it would not go in, something (not a disk) was stopping it once it had traveled about half way in.
I then noticed that when waking from sleep or turning on, the normal noise was very different, cut short, and sounded like it was struggling against something.
I believe the mechanism of the drive has somehow failed. Does anyone have any solutions?
It is a iBook G4 1.33GHz with 1.25GB ram installed if that helps.

I have never had any problems with this SuperDrive, until I installed Toast last week. I went to burn a disk, and it failed the burn; then after that any kind of disk I inserted into the drive would be ejected.
The drive doesn't even try to read it, nor does it try to spin up whatsoever... I put the disk in, it makes an 'accepting' noise, then less than two seconds later, it rejects it. I'm running 10.6.4, with HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N running AP12 firmware.
Like I said before, the disk drive never had trouble reading anything, but all of a sudden decided to reject every one under the sun.
Restarting in Windows doesn't effect it, nor does inserting a disk before the computer boots. Everything appears normal in diagnostics, but the drive is not even trying to read it.

I have a problem on my IMac 27" (early 2010) when I want so listen to some CD. The Superdive doesn't read the disc (is clean of course) and it ejects after a few tried. On the other hand, no problems with DVD. So I don't know if is a software problem.

It's been almost over 6 month, I didn't run "Disk Utility" on my Early 2006 Tiger MacBook.
As of tonight, I I just run "Verify Disk" .... FAILED to complete. So it won't let me click "Repair Disk" (inactive; no way to click).
That means I have to use my Tiger DVD boot up from superdrive!
Problem is my superdrive has been not responding at all for a couple of month. Since I don't use it at all, I didn't care.
... but now I need to run my Tiger original DVD
What should I do?
Please let me know how to proceed to repair my HD without using superdrive as it is not working. Any alternative?

I just added a pair of Kingston 2GB FB DIMM PC2 6400 sticks of RAM to my Mac Pro 8-core on top of the two 1GB RAM sticks that the computer came with. I was expecting a total of 6 GB of RAM but when I go to computer info it says I only have 4GB which means that the new Kingston sticks are reading as 1GB each instead of 2GB.
Is this bad memory or am I missing something?

I bought my Mac Mini in late 2006 and have had very few problems with it up until recently. I installed Boot Camp with Windows XP on the computer and have been using both operating systems fairly equally until the Windows XP operating system stopped working correctly. I decided it would be best to back up my data and reformat, so I erased the Windows XP partition and am currently trying to make the partition again. Heres the problem: Whenever I insert the Windows XP install CD (or any CD - music or not) it just displays as 'blank cd/disc' and when I try clicking it, the Mac Mini says there is nothing on the disc. I have tried burning the Windows XP operating system to several discs as well to see if my copy was faulty, and yet it will not work.

I just got my new MBPR in the mail today and figured I'd drain the battery to 0 before fully charging it for the first time. Only problem is, the charger doesn't seem to be working properly. The light on the magsafe never turns on and the computer reads "Not Charging" for the battery status, yet it is still charging the battery VERY slowly. I've tried many different outlets throughout my house, and have taken off the extension for the power cord also. Nothing can get that light to turn on!

I have an older Power Mac G5 that I had problems with, and hoped I could get a little help.I wanted to start fresh, so I booted the Mac OSX software disk that came with the computer, and I was able to get my computer back to factory fresh (software-wise). After I reloaded the OSX (and did all of the software updates from Apple), I tried loading a program from an original installation CD/DVD. It would not load--it tried, but eventually ejected the disk. This happened over and over--I tried different types of discs (music CDs, DVDs, software), and the ONLY CDS/DVDs that work are the MAC OSX installation discs. I have tried using a DVD lense cleaner and compressed air.

I replaced my Cd-rom/DVD player a month ago after it was giving me trouble. I bought a Superdrive on ebay and installed it. I'm still having problems though, and I can barely use it. I have to tilt the laptop back to get it to read or eject a disc. Do you think it's the drive or is it some other problem since I am on my 2nd drive? I don't have the money to have apple fix it, it's only 1.5 years old.

I installed new RAM. BUT, there is some trouble that I hope you can help with:1. My G5 sometimes reads 6.5 gigs of RAM, and sometimes 5.5 gigs of RAM. NOTE: Slots DIMM6/J43 & DIMM6/J44 vary in gig size (see at bottom)2. I can't shutdown. The icons disappear from screen, but, fans rev-up, and screen background remains, but, computer won't shutdown. I have to shutdown with power button.3. I've Reset PRAM, unplugged power and disconnected all plug-ins,and then started again. No change.4. I've done disc repair off of OS X disc. No change. Size: 512 MB

I have a Quicksilver 933 with 1.5GB ram and 2 internal hard drives (WD 320GB, Maxtor 80Gb). Operating system is 10.4.11, Boot ROM is 4.2.5f1. It's my understanding that some QS were produced with the ability to use larger hard drives. Mine does not and I am wondering what I can do to correct this. Computer sees and writes to both drives. The 80 is fully usable but 320 only allows 128 of storage. Disk utility sees whole drive as just under 300Gb but I can't use more than 128. I have ATA HiCap driver that will allow me to partition into sections but it's a pain. Is that my only option or buying a card?

I have a macbook pro operating on OS X software, version 10.6.8. I am trying to upgrade to the newest version (I'm clearly behind, I know) and when I click "get" in the app store the download drops into the dock and reads "OS X Yosemite--waiting" and the only option is to click "cancel download". I've restarted the download twice and restarted the computer once.

So my installation of OS X decided to stop working correctly today and after some trouble shooting I found I needed to re install. I decided to Archive and reinstall, my backups are not as recent as they should be. During the first reinstall attempt it froze when I tried to view the install log. I now on my second attempt at reinstalling and a again choose archive (this time the option to preserve user setting is greyed out). With the trouble I had my old files should still be there right?

I would think the answer would be yes, but all the info I find on Apple's website and the search results I browsed through on the formums only mention SD cards. No mention of SDHC. My old computer only read regular SD cards, which was a real bummer. I have a SDHC card for my camera, and am hoping the new Macbook Pro I'm going to buy can read the cards.

never really had a terrible problem with this computuer until the last few months with the battery wearing out and having to replace the charging cord twice but now it seems like I have a problem here. Earlier today, less than an hour ago, i burned a CD for my buddy, when i went to burn the second disk, it didnt want to accept it. Finally, when it did, it wouldnt read I had a disk in it. When i got home, i tried other cds/dvds and it wouldnt read them either. It was making a rather bad sound, kind of like an alarm sound. The CD will not spin and is ejeceted shortly after. I was planning on bootcamping my Macbook Pro later this weekend, but if i can not get this to work, I wont be able to. I dont think i have Apple Care and the nearest apple store is about a 2 hour drive from my house.Â

A few weeks ago I began to develop a problem when using Google search in Safari. It takes me there. However, when I enter my search term and submit, it just returns me to Google. I then reenter the search term again, and this second time, it always works. I have tried clearing cookies and cache. Firefox does not display this behavior nor other Macs I have even under Safari.

I have a mac mini G4 with Mac OSX 10.4.11. I have Safari 3.2.1 and Mac Preview version 3.0.9. Beginning last week when I attempt to print a page or article from online using Safari and Firefox the browser crashes. Likewise, when I attempt to print from a PDF file loaded in Mac Preview, the file crashes. I thought it was a printer issue until I realized that I can print Word documents without issue. I have had no problems with printing in the past, but now I do for no good reason. It is curious that printing PDFs and webpages does not work, but printing Word documents does.

I own a Macbook Pro, it's a A1150 model with an Intel Core Duo processor. I'm trying to use my install disc but every time I try to use it, the cd drive reads it for a few seconds but then just ejects it afterwards. What can I try to get it to work? My laptop came with the 10.4.5 install disc and I upgraded to 10.6 Snow Leopard via disc (the disc itself just says 10.6). I have all my software updates and it shows I have OS X version 10.6.8 currently installed.
When I turn on the computer with the 10.4.5 disc already inserted and hold C it just boots up like normal and ejects my install disc. Likewise when I try with the 10.6 Snow Leopard disc it does the same thing. I've tried holding the option key and it still just ejects the disc after it reads it for a while. Both discs are genuine (not copies) in pretty much like new condition without and scratches/smudges/dirt and my Superdrive reads/burns cd and dvd's just fine.
