My iMac does not start up as usual. I now get a ' start up disk is full. You need to make space available on your start up disk by deleting files' message. Â I am able to key my log on password however I just get the purple galaxy screen with no desktop.Â
If I try to use the keyboard I get a tone when pressing the keys. Â
Has worked perfectly well up until I got this dusk full message. Â
Getting the message, "your start up disc is full."

My mackbook air keeps telling me that my start up disk is full. I delete items daily but keep receiving the same message. I have found that the problem may be that items are being saved in multiple areas on my computer. I don't know why this is happening and so I don't really know which copies to delete and which to save. It this point I cant even get software updates or compress files since there is not enough space available at this time.

then I get "Your start up disk is almost full" message, stating I have a few hundred MB's left, I know this isn't true so after a restart I get my many GB's back, anyone know why I keep getting the message? I've not come across this before & don't know how to stop it.

I see a lot of people suggesting that perhaps because the poster had less than 10gb (which is my case as well-- I have around 8), that this is why this message is happening. Well, my response to that is:
1)I have had around 8gb free for months, and these messages only started appearing in the last week. Each time I go "???" and look at my finder to see 8.4gb free or whatever, and I am like "WHY ARE YOU TELLING ME I AM OUT OF SPACE?
2)in the terminal, I was trying to download a few 20-30mb files, and wget quit out on me saying "insufficient storage space left on device".and doing "df -h" shows me that I have almost 10% free.. and again this is a 20-30mb, so this is total nonsense.
Are there any suggestions as to what might be causing this and a course of action, other than being told: "copy your files to an external hard drive and delete them on your startup disk".
I have taken everything off my desk top and backed it up and it's still saying the same thing! I've also emptied the trash. I get it when I try to use Photoshop.

Whenever I boot up the SL install disk (either plugged in via USB drive or remote disc from my iMac), I select English as my language, "Continue" on the welcome screen, and when I get to the portion where I have to choose a disk to install onto, my MBA's hard drive has a yellow triangle on it and a caption underneath that says "Mac OS X Cannot Start Up From This Disk".
I've used Disk Utility to Verify and Repair, but still get the same result.
My MacBook Air is a 2nd generation machine, 120G hard drive (45G free), and MS Office 2008 installed. Other than that (and all my music and files), it's exactly as it came from Apple when I ordered it.
this isn't an isolated issue - there are threads about this over at Apple and InsanelyMac: I'm unable to install Snow Leopard. When I run the installer, it'll tell me that "Mac OS X cannot be installed on "Macintosh HD", because this disk cannot be used to start up your computer" (Macintosh HD being my OS X volume, obviously). I'm seeing this issue on a relatively new 1.8ghz Macbook Air with a 128gb SSD - however, as far as I can tell from the other threads, the problem also affects iMacs and Macbooks.
Some people apparently attributed the issue to a PGP installation they had on their harddrive. Others found a file called backup.backupdb in their root - deleting it fixed the problem. However, most people don't have any of that installed on their computers and the upgrade still won't work. - if anyone has found a solution to the issue, please let me know :-( I'm stuck here. I don't have an external drive for the MBA and booting from a network drive has never worked on this particular machine - so I can't do a clean install, either.
I am most certain that this is the case: foolishly, I didnt leave much free space and now the disk doesnt want to mount. I tried the single user mode, I also booted from DVD, they appear but the disk utility shows the disk but I cannot repair the disk, because it is unmounted. I tried the basic commands in single user mode, no effect either. I still cant get over the blue screen with the apple logo and a circle running. I need to free up some spasce. Unforetunately, important files were not backedup, so I really cant delete the whole disk. I need to delete specific files.  I dont know where are my big files located - so, how do I orientate myself among the folders? Lets say I would delete my itunes libary, which I would later on renew thanks to the back/up, how would I delete them?Â

I just got a message that my startup disk is full. It happened while I was importing some videos. I do have a lot of videos on there. It's my daughter's macbook, but I use it for video editing. Is the startup disk the hard drive on these things? I'm not completely used to Macs yet, I was planning on deleting some of the older video files that are no longer needed, but should my daughter delete photos, etc. too?

I am getting a message that my startup disk is almost full. My HDD is roughly 500GB and 327GB are free. Doesn't make much sense to me. Something strange in one of the latest updates? Is there some setting I need to change in order to open up more memory for system files?

I ran SuperDuper last night and the backup failed with an unknown error. After, Spotlight didn't find files. I rebooted and at the login screen was given the error message 'backup disc full, delete some files' - problem is, OS X won't boot beyond the starfield screen, so there's no way of deleting files or running the system. I took the drive out and put it in a USB caddy on another machine and ran Disk Utility - it said repairs were needed, so I did this. However, putting it back into the MBP nothing has changed, it still won't boot and insists the disc is full - there is over 180GB free! (I can see this when I mount it on another machine.)
View 4 Replies View RelatedAt work I am using a Mac os 10.3.9 and I have been getting a message telling me that the start up disk is full. Usually when I delete messages from the mailbox it gives me most of my memory back, but this time it didn't. I called my server and they deleted the messages from there, but that didn't do anything either. I have about 88 MB in my memory. Does anyone know what I can do to gain the memory back? I have went and repaired permissions, but that didn't do anything for it. I am not very computer literate and right now I am at home and do not have access to the computer.
