OS X :: Clean Install - Restoring User Directory To 2nd Drive?

Oct 3, 2010

I am doing a clean install on my Mac Pro and want to bring in my user directory onto a 2nd drive (where it was originally).During the install, should I point to an external drive where I know have my user directory cloned and allow OS X to restore it?Should I just copy my user directory to the 2nd drive after doing the install?

Other caveats? I can foresee all sorts of potential problems. Anybody have any experience with this?I know that I will lose my apps in the process.

I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard and I'm wondering if I can just make a copy (to my external HD) of my entire Music and Pictures folders, and then drag them to replace the new ones created in the clean install? If I do so, will my photos and music appear in iTunes/iPhoto as it should?

IMac :: Unable To Install Clean Snow Leopard / Instructions To Install On Internal Drive?

Dec 20, 2009

The internal hard drive on my early 2009 iMac is being replaced but I have to reinstall Snow Leopard myself.I did search in MRoogle and at Apple and cannot seem to find instructions on how to perform a clean Snow Leopard install on an iMac internal HD.

Can I do this? And if so how? Or do you think I should try and install Leopard on the existing Hd in the iMac? I still have these discs but have to get the SL applications install disc out of my drive (it's stuck and the iMac won't boot past the blue screen).

IMac :: Clone Vs Clean Install When Going From Hard Drive To Sdd?

Nov 1, 2010

I'm drop shipping my 27" imac refurb to OWC for them to install the sdd, ram, etc. Someone here said OWC will clone the hd to the ssd and then the end user went back and did a clean install. Wouldn't it be better if OWC just installed the SSD, left it clean, and I did the install from the disks myself? I mean I assume it's a time issue why they would clone, not fresh install. I have plenty of time to do it. Is it not that simple? Is there something more fangled to it, or is it just running the disks and doing what they say?

Mac Mini :: Cannot Format Hard Drive And Do A Clean Install?

Apr 27, 2012

I'm in a pretty big mess right now.  I was using boot camp with lion and Windows 7 no problem and I wanted to edit the sizes of the partions.  It didnt go so well and I ended up losing both operating systems.  Now the big problem is when I boot up from the recovery partion I cannot do any sort of formating from the disk utility, it always give me some sort of error.  When I try to install lion via web there is no partion that I can Install it to.  I can install Windows no problem from a USB drive whcih I have done already.  When managing the disk in windows I see 2 of the windows partions, the mac recovery partion, and an 80 GB partition that I can format but I cannot do anything else with.  I dont have any images or recovery devices other than the recovery partition.how to get the drive back to mac format so I can re install lion.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Simply Clean Install On A Fresh Hard Drive?

Apr 21, 2012

This nonsense: To upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion, you must be running OS X Snow Leopard. If you have OS X v10.5 Leopard, purchase OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard now and install it on your Mac. Then buy OS X Lion as a digital download from the Mac App Store- seems very very un-apple.

So let me get this straight: I have to install an outdated OS (snow Leopard) in order to install Lion. ???

Remember when an OS was self contained, not an add-on upgrade feature?

I am puzzled- I would simply like to boot my mac pro from leopard (current os), and install LION on a newly placed, freshly formatted internal hard drive on same computer. Why would i need to have the intermediary step?

The folks at apple store couldn't answer- even the genius folk weren't sure- dissappointing at best-

Software :: Restoring After HDD Change And Clean System Installation

Mar 9, 2009

I have just upgraded from a 60GB HD running OS X 10.4.11? to a 250GB drive.

Before changing HDs, I backed up the old HD onto an external FireWire drive using Retrospect Express 6.1.
I made a clean install of 10.5.6 onto the new HD, installed Retrospect Express.

I then restored my entire old HD to a *folder* on my new HD. There is room for it on the external FireWire disk also if that is better.

I expected wrongly to be able to use Migration Assistant to integrate my applications, e-mails, calendar, bookmarks, etc. into 10.5.6 but it did not allow me to select a folder to migrate from (I think it is looking preferably for another Mac attached via FireWire or at least an external disk, but I'm not sure what it's limits are).

I am also now concerned about Migration Assistant losing data (such as filed e-mails) as I have consulted with a tech friend who says it is problematic and I should restore by hand! Can you tell me the most efficient and reliable way to get out of my predicament? I'm crazy busy business-wise and I don't have time to lose wallowing & finding my own way, I can afford the time to do things right though :-) which is why I'm asking.

Obviously I am shut down now, I do not want to start doing "real work" on my computer until all my applications and files are in their proper places.

Applications (Quark, Adobe, Apple), all my Mail accounts, iCal, Fonts, Firefox + extensions & bookmarks are my mission-critical tools.

OS X :: How To Migrate A User Directory Without Migration Assistant

Nov 4, 2010

I recently did a clean install and now I am attempting to migrate user data to the new install. I have a Mac Pro with four internal drives. OS X is on the boot drive, of course, and the user home folder I'd like to transfer is on another internal drive. (This is because I had moved all user directories from the boot drive to a separate internal drive in the Mac Pro. A consultant advised me to do this to increase performance.)

I thought I'd be able to use Migration Assistant to simply migrate the user to the new install, but it appears you can only use MA with a Time Machine back-up or a disk with OS X installed.

So what's the best way to move this user back?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Adding User To Home Directory?

May 23, 2012

On my Mac Mini, I have set up a new user because of problems with the OS. So far, it is working fine. I also have a G5 running OS 10.4.11. There is an account on both machines with the same name. However, the new account on the Mini is a different name. The G5 does not offer the "login as" (at least that I can see, so my access to the new account on the Mini is limited to a dropbox. To simplify: A is the account on both the Mini and the G5, B is the account only on the Mini. I tried extending the permissions on B's home directory, but that did not work. Using get info, I unlocked the file then tried to add A to the list of users. For some reason, nothing happened.

How can I give user A permission to access user B's home directory on the Mini?

OS X :: Lost Write Permission To User Home Directory

Mar 23, 2010

Sometime in the past couple of days I lost write permission to my own home directory (/Users/yalla) - The attributes for my homedirectory are correct, but there are extended attributes as well, and I believe this is where the problem lies.

For Documents, Downloads etc, I am allowed to create/modify/delete files and directories, but under my pure homedirectory ~yalla I am all of a sudden unable to write, meaning I cannot create for instance a new .bashrc (not that I need to since I already have one), or create new catalogues.

I have tried both from Terminal and from Finder, and I am not allowed to create new directories under ny homedir. By going to Finder and going under "Get Info" for my homedir, I have gone to Sharing & Permissions and changed from Read Only to Read & Write which seems to fix it. I have however not been there before and made any changes, and I am therefore worried that by changing this to R&W I am fixing a symptom and not the core problem.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Change User Account Name Or Home Directory Name?

I've a user who has been given a company shared MacBook Air. The account name was previously our company name, but I've sucessfully followed the guide [URL] to change this. Thus, the username is now now his firstname & lastname. The home folder is firstnamelastname. However, the old username (our company name) is still showing up as the username for some email recipients and airdrop.I'm guessing the email name might be saved localy on a few of the users contacts since he's been sending a few emails before the user name was updated. Can this be confirmed in any way?

I have wiped my hard disk clean and reinstalled Lion. I don't want to restore the whole shebang from my Time Machine backup because I want my apps to be installed clean. So my first question is about restoring my mail. I understand that I should make Mail my current application, then click on "Enter Time Machine."When I do that, I see "Today" which is my current setup - nothing much on my computer. I try to go back in time, but I can't because Time Machine thinks "Today" is the only existing backup. How can I get Time Machine to restore Mail from my hard drive before it was wiped clean?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Change User Account Name Or Home Directory Name?

May 23, 2012

iMac OS X 10.6.8.  previously migrated account -- need to rename the account at the destination. Step 6 in the support page does not occur.  I never get a chance to hit OK to this: 6.  Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents. A red flag appears in the field that conflicts (either the short name or the full name). The name(s) cannot be changed! must cancel out.

It says that "the installation failed. the installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. contact the software manufacturer for assistance".

1)normal install - fail

2)repair permission - fail

3)install in safe mode - fail

4) install using another admin acc - fail

5) made an image out of the disc and install - fail

6) used a similar disc(my dad's since we have identical version) - fai

8) reinstall the mac - fail
