In my office one of my iMac's suffered a complete system crash. I am reinstalling OS X Lion as I write this post. The iMac was backed up to an external hard drive using time machine. After the new install of Lion how do I grab my user files from the machine backup?
View 2 Replies View RelatedEver since I downloaded iplayer - my mac has been running slow. I have followed a few tips to remove it and all other related files - but it still runs low (spinning wheel of death) and now pdf's dont download correctly (I guess I have deleted too much).Â
My ideal would be to start from scrach - although I want to keep my itunes and iphotos files as well as my documents. Is there a way to reload back to factory settings then add selected programs and folders from timemachine? I am in the process of timemachine backing up everything now.Â

Updating lion and the blue installation bar has moved to abou1cm from the right and has reached the "Âoving items into place..." location. The blue color is still flowing like it is installing, but the bar has moved for over an hour. I'm afraid to shut the machine off.
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust a quick question.... when you install a new OS you have the opportunity of copying all your stuff over from another drive via Migration Assistant. Where does it dump all the files? Does it mirror how it originally was, only in the new OS, or is it put all in the Home folder?
Secondly, when we install Snow Leopard we're supposed to get 6GB more space than before. Would this be the case with any type of install, be it erase and install, archive and install or just upgrade?
Basically I'm wondering how you go about getting the extra 6GB space plus having all my stuff and settings as it was it was in the previous OS?
I'm trying to update my Macbook Pro to the new 10.7.4 I have downloaded the update twice (no interruptions during download) and when i click to restart the computer to install the update, the update dosent install. I keep getting an error message saying the download is corrupted, when the update tries to unpack to install. Â

I downloaded a Zip archive file, but when I double-click on it to unzip, it turns into another zipped file (CPGZ Archive). I tried the download twice, with the same result. I don't have the Archive Utility?

I have a ".iso" installation file and I just can't read it in my Mac (Mac OS X). When I double-click on the file, it doesn't work. The message I get says it's "not recognized". That ".iso" file installs properly in my PC. I searched this forum and learned that normally, ISO files should automatically work with Mac OS X. Well, it's not the case for me! I have a 4 years old Mac book with Mac OS X.

My sister's Macbook is currently a mess and I want to do an archive and install on her system. She keeps absolutely everything on folders on her desktop. Will the archive and install keep all of her files even if they are in the desktop?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am new to mac, I have a macbook on 10.4.11 OS. I am unable to install any .pkg files, I tried to install a driver for wacom tablet ( I get the file from wacom website, apple site directed me to there), my laptop cant open the file, it gives no error code neither, it gives no respond no reaction to my click, double click and try to use open with "installer" move. I did check, in my utility dir there is a installer, but I dont know why it cant install/pkg files for me. I also checked crash reporter under log, there is no crash report log for installer. Same story happens to canon printer driver .pkg file too. I also lose the disks went with laptop so I may have difficult to reinstall the system.

Just wondering if you can play MP4 video files on OSX without having to install or buy anything. I've had such a pain with my windows machine in trying to find codecs to play these files.
Just wondering if the Mac is also easier on this end too. I can't wait till Leopard because I'm jumping off this windows ship asap.
i just got my mac book pro a few days ago, does anyone know how to get rid of some unecesary files to clean up the hard drive? leopard takes up so much room
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was just wondering how it works using Time Machine to get everything back on my Mac after installing SL via a clean install.. Will everything be exactly as it was before the wipe and install, or are there certain things, like Mail for example that will need to be reconfigured?

Are you allowed to install Lion on a vmware workstation?I know earlier version you were not allowed via licensing issues.

So my hard-drive died. Luckily I have a Time Machine backup of my system. I bought a new HD and tried to restore from the backup. No-go. It complains that it can't restore certain file, so it snorts the restore. I tried an older backup, no help.
So I decided to do a fresh install instead. But once I have OS up & running again, can I restore files from my old Time Machine backup? How does the process work? I'm afraid if I point Time Machone to my old backup, it will overwrite it.
I do have my files backed up manually as well, so I can always copy them by hand. Bit that backup is not as recent as the TM backup.
I am trying to install Wireshark. The directions say to open a Finder window and navigate to /usr/local/bin. I cannot find where this is in Finder. Can someone provide me a detailed path how I can find this folder to copy Wireshark files?

I ordered the $29 upgrade online. I was wondering if I could do a hard drive format and fresh install then restore my photos and documents and mp3s from my Time Capsule using Time Machine. This would probably free up even more HD space and make the OS cleaner and fresher, no? Would this be possible?
View 12 Replies View Relatedwhen I lost my entire collection of PC games, I've gone through the process of making a .iso file of all of the games I've purchased. I have a few games in .iso files sitting on my mac desktop. For some reason, I cannot install Windows Vista on bootcamp anymore, as whenever I try to start up, I get an error saying something like the file "Wmilib" is missing or something, and I can't repair it using the startup disk no matter what. Which leads me to crossovers. I spent my money on it, and am hoping I didn't waste it. Whenever I tell Crossover to load from my mounted .iso file, and hit the "proceed" button, it takes me to the top drop-down menu, where it asks me to select a program to install.
The only problem is that I want to install from my mounted .iso file, and not from the list of supported programs, which is stupid. I've also tried just directly opening the "Setup.exe" file right with Crossover, and that still does nothing, which is very frustrating. Is it even possible to install games on crossover using a .iso file? And if so, what am I doing wrong, that whenever I hit "proceed" button it takes me right to the list of supported software and WON'T LET ME INSTALL without choosing one?
At first, I tried to upgrade and the upgrade failed to the point of rendering the system useless. I then decided to reformat the drive using disk utility and try a clean install. I then got this error and I'm stuck and have no clue what to do now: "The installer can't extract files from the package for BaseSystem. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." I have never encountered anything like this before.

Own a late 2011 macbook pro. want to install Lion on new SSD. Also have Lion thumb drive pruchaced from Apple and stuff to mount an external drive. Figure to just install new SSD drive and keep working old one as a backup (not a time machine backup) and use Lion thumb drive and do a cleaninstall. Also have latest iLife on dvd. ? Will this put me back in the same shape as I was before I switched drives?

I have tried twice to install Lion back up on a USB and in both cases, the USB became unrecognizable after the first two steps. The first USB was a 4gb and the second was a 16gb. Â
All I want is a back up in case I have to reinstall Lion at some future time. Â
