OS X :: Proper Default Permissions/ Ownership For Secondary Drive?

Oct 28, 2009

I recently bought I new primary sata drive for a MacPro and loaded Leopard on it while keeping a 2ndary internal sata drive ... which included data ... intact.

Now under Leopard, under permissions for the 2ndary internal sata drive, it sees an "unknown" account (which is the previous Tiger owner) and it doesn't allow any writing/ deleting on the 2ndary drive.

I know how to change the permissions and ownership but don't know exactly what Leopard default ownership and permissions I should assign to the 2ndary drive.

The new Home acct name, System, Admin, Everyone etc.
Usually there is a cascading list of 2 or 3 but I can't remember what
they should be.

Software :: External Hard Drive - Change "Ownership & Permissions"

Jun 22, 2008

I was just playing around with my external hard-drive - the "Ownership & Permissions" section of it's Info - and accidently changed it from "You may Read & Write" to "You have No Access" and while trying to change it back it somehow wouldn't work and then as I tried to open folders inside it, everything was missing inside the folders (presumedly not deleted since there was still 100GB of space used). So I restarted my computer as well as the hard-drive and now it won't even show up on the desktop. The odd thing is I still have it as an icon on my dock and when I click on it to open it, it just says "The application "(null)" cannot be launched. -5000". If you need to know, I have an iMac Version 10.4.11. Does anyone know what is wrong and what I should do to get it all back to normal?

MacBook Pro :: Default Resolution On External Monitor - Proper Display

Feb 3, 2010

I have my MacBook hooked up to an external monitor of 1920 x 1080 resolution. I don't use the MacBook screen at all. Every time I turn on my MacBook it displays on the external monitor as it should, but at the MacBook's 1280 x 800 resolution, which obviously looks nasty and stretched on the big monitor. I fix this by simply putting the Mac to sleep and pressing a key on my keyboard to wake it up again; and it loads in the proper resolution. Is there a way to make it display 1920 x 1080 on boot up without having to sleep and wake every single time? Keeping my MacBook in sleep mode when not in use isn't an option.

OS X :: How Do I Enable Ownership Of An External Drive?

Jan 30, 2010

I recently bought a new external drive and am trying to put all my old time machine backups on it. I was on the phone with Apple support for a little bit and they said the best way to do this is to just drag and drop the whole backups folder. When I do that, a little window pops up saying that I do not have ownership of the drive, how do I change that?

OS X :: How To Change Default File Permissions

Sep 21, 2009

Using OS X Leopard 10.5.8 on PowerPC G5. We have 15 people sharing files on a network. If we open a file on the network, work on it, and save it, it is readable and writable for everybody. But if we drag the file off the network, work on it on our own hard drive, and save it, and then drag it back to the network, it is read-only for everybody. Documents made on our own hard drives are, by default, read-only for others. This is a real time waster for us!

This means that every time we make a document on our own hard drives, we have to remember to go to the extra trouble to change it's permissions before we put it on our network. Please, is there some way to change the default settings, so that if I, say, save a Word doc on my hard drive and then move it to the network, it is readable and writable by everybody without me having to change it's permissions?

OS X :: Change Default Permissions When Writing To HD?

Dec 15, 2009

I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.8 and I'm having problems with file permissions. When I save a file, the file is readable and writable by the owner, and read only to all others (which I know is normal), but I would like my files to have read and write access to all upon saving them. Is there any way to accomplish this without simply changing the permissions of all the parent directories?

OS X :: Change Default Permissions With Multiple Users?

Jan 3, 2007

my wife and i share a computer, but use seperate accounts for seperate mail accounts, etc. here is a problem that bothers me from time to time: when one of us creates a new file/folder, by default it is read-only to the other user. we are both administrators on the machine, but still we run into permissions issues. for myself, i can override the settings for a particular file/folder by changing the permissions, but my wife is not so technical. we trust eachother and prefer to have complete access to eachother's files, since we share many.

is there a way to set default permissions for new files/folders to be more open, easier to share with multiple users? also a related question i've had is, is it possible to share a common iphoto/itunes library between two different user accounts? for example, when one person uploads a new itunes album or new photos, for the other person's library to be automatically updated as well?

After searching the web, I can't seem to find Mac drivers for this drive. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, maybe they are not there.

IMac :: Unable To Use TV As Secondary Monitor / Switch Between Primary And Secondary Display?

Feb 2, 2009

we are trying to hook up our TV as a secondary monitor (for hulu, netflix, etc) but it defaults as the primary monitor. We would like to keep the imac as the primary monitor, and have the TV as a secondary, but cannot figure out how to do it! The only way we can get the imac back to primary status is if we use mirror mode. Once we take it off mirror mode, the TV becomes the primary monitor again, and there appears to be no way of switching it in OSX display preferences.

I've done similar hookups with my laptop, and the TV defaults as the secondary monitor. Why isn't this happening with our iMac? Any ideas?

Power Mac G5 :: Different OS On Secondary Hard Drive?

Nov 29, 2007

Have successfully installed a Seagate Barracuda 160GB internal HD (2nd HD) and it's icon is mounted on the desktop. I used Disc Utility to format the drive (Mac OS Extended-Journal), but was unable to install Tiger because of a faulty install DVD (I think). I tried the Panther install DVD's that came with the G5, but am unable to open the the first DVD of that set either (get the grey screen with no wheel, with strange color lines).

More importantly, the drive somehow has a complete duplicate of my other drive. Everything! Also, it updates with things that that I download or add to my Panther drive. How is this, if I did an erase and format using Utility? I'd like to use this 2nd HD as a backup HD (if I can ever get an install DVD to open). Why doesn't the 2nd HD show in the Start up Disc Window? How do I successfully erase it and format this 2nd HD? How would I run a different OS on this 2nd HD?

Information:
G5 dual 2.0GHz
Mac OS X (10.3.x)

Hardware :: Adding Time Capsule As Secondary TM Drive

Dec 19, 2008

I recently had to erase the HD on my iMac and do a complete restore from my external Time Machine drive. Luckily everything, including programs, were restored to where they were during the last backup. This mishap underscored the importance of having everything backed-up and made me truly appreciate Time Machine. As a result I'm considering adding Time Capsule as a secondary Time Machine drive (in addition to the G-drive I have connected via firewire),to act as a back-up to the back-up. I was wondering if I'd be able to do that if I install TC using the "Bridge to an existing network" option during setup.

Would I be able to manage my backups by changing the volume in Time Machine's settings from TC to my G-Force HD, or vice versa? To be clear, i want two full back-up records on separate drives at any given time. I am accustomed to doing my back-ups manually as I don't want my back-up HD running continuously or every hour or so as is suggested by Apple. My feeling is that my external HD will last longer by not being powered-on 24/7. Another reason why I like TC over simply getting a second external HD is because of the networking capability of TC. I get a very weak signal as it is in my basement and I'm hopeful this will improve streaming to my ps3 and iPhone when I'm downstairs.

Software :: Cannot Find / Access Secondary Hard Drive?

Nov 20, 2009

I have a G3 mac blue. About 4 years ago my ex-husband installed a new hard drive and upped the memory as far as it would go. I am currently using Mac 4.11 system I think. This morning the computer was making an odd noise and wouldn't move off the screen saver mode. I rebooted. When it came back up, the odd noise was there for a minute or so and then stopped. However, it will only access the original hard drive, which I haven't saved anything on for 3 years. How can I find my secondary hard drive? Incidently I wasn't able to access the old hard drive for about 2 years. Sure it would be nice if i could access the both of them but i just want my new one back!! I live in a small town where no one is mac proficient. I replaced the power unit a year ago myself.

OS X :: Repair Permissions Again And Again / External FW Drive With Leopard

Feb 11, 2010

After some various installations and file copy from/to external hard drives i ran the repair permissions on the bootup hard drive.

There was a listing about a mile long. Whoa, that does not look good to me.

So, i ran the persmissions repair again: another mile long listing: yikes.

Yep, ran another permissions repair and same thing.

How many times do you have to run permissions until it just show a few permissions that had to be corrected ? Or is this a sign that the system is in trouble.

This was an external FW drive with Leopard run by iMac 3.06GHz.

Intel Mac :: Sharing Permissions On External Drive?

Mar 21, 2012

I'm having trouble setting the sharing priveleges on an external drive connected to my mac with snow leopard. My Drive is an external NTFS formatted drive.  I can share the drive across the wifi network just fine if I have the guest account turned on, but I want to restrict access to certain folders using "sharing only" user accounts.I want to use SMB sharing. What I have is a folder called Movies that I want to share across the wifi with my housemates via a user account called "house" only I have another folder called "iPhone shite" (no kidding) that I want to share via a user account called "devacct" only I have set permissions for Sys Admin(Read and Write). Admin(Write Only Dropbox), and Everyone(No Access)When a user logs into the mac over the wifi, what happens is that even though I have enabled sharing for both users, and turned off the guest account, regardless of what permissions are set for each of these users, "devacct" can see the Movies folder and "house" can see the iPhone shite folder.  This is not what I want. What also happens is that when I set the permissions, they do not save even though I click the lock.  The extra user permissions disappear and the basic permissions reset to default.
