OS X Mavericks :: Apple Logo And Spinning Wheel After Hard Drive Replacement And Restore

Aug 26, 2014

I replaced my hard drive at the weekend in a mid 2010 MacBook Pro with a Samsung/Seagate 1TB 2.5 inch 5400RPM SATA II Hard Disk Drive.  The install of the hardware went fine, and the computer recognised it no problem.  I went through the process of formatting which again went ok, then I moved on to the restore of the old image from my time machine.

After the 4 hours or so it said restore successful and a restart was required - after the restart I am presented with the apple logo and spinning wheel and can make no progress beyond this point.

I have tried 3 restores now - all of which were 'successful' and have the same issue.  I have checked the disk using the repair tool and there are no recoded issues so I'm at a loss.

OS X Mavericks :: Independently Backup Two Internal Drives On One External Drive

Jun 21, 2014

My Computer: Mid 2010 - 15" MacBook Pro - OSX 10.9.3 My Past Issue:

I have two internal drives, one SSD one HD. I have my OS and applications on the SSD and my home folder on the HD. I have an external drive that I was using as a time machine backup and had no issue backing up both drives. The problem arose when I needed to restore my computer. Time machine had backed up the data as basically one drive, so when trying to restore it wanted to load all the data onto either the HD or the SSD ONLY. I was unable to restore as the combined data was to large for either drive. I was able to get my computer back in working order, but would like to avoid such a catastrophe in the future. My Current Issue:

What I am hoping to accomplish would be to partition the external drive, and then have two independent time machine backups. One for the SSD and one for the HD. This way I would be able to restore the drives separately in the future if needed.

IMac :: Unable To Use TV As Secondary Monitor / Switch Between Primary And Secondary Display?

Feb 2, 2009

we are trying to hook up our TV as a secondary monitor (for hulu, netflix, etc) but it defaults as the primary monitor. We would like to keep the imac as the primary monitor, and have the TV as a secondary, but cannot figure out how to do it! The only way we can get the imac back to primary status is if we use mirror mode. Once we take it off mirror mode, the TV becomes the primary monitor again, and there appears to be no way of switching it in OSX display preferences.

I've done similar hookups with my laptop, and the TV defaults as the secondary monitor. Why isn't this happening with our iMac? Any ideas?

Power Mac G5 :: Different OS On Secondary Hard Drive?

Nov 29, 2007

Have successfully installed a Seagate Barracuda 160GB internal HD (2nd HD) and it's icon is mounted on the desktop. I used Disc Utility to format the drive (Mac OS Extended-Journal), but was unable to install Tiger because of a faulty install DVD (I think). I tried the Panther install DVD's that came with the G5, but am unable to open the the first DVD of that set either (get the grey screen with no wheel, with strange color lines).

More importantly, the drive somehow has a complete duplicate of my other drive. Everything! Also, it updates with things that that I download or add to my Panther drive. How is this, if I did an erase and format using Utility? I'd like to use this 2nd HD as a backup HD (if I can ever get an install DVD to open). Why doesn't the 2nd HD show in the Start up Disc Window? How do I successfully erase it and format this 2nd HD? How would I run a different OS on this 2nd HD?

Intel Mac :: How To Transfer All Data From Old Internal Hard Drive To A New Internal Hard Drive?

Feb 10, 2012

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

OS X :: Proper Default Permissions/ Ownership For Secondary Drive?

Oct 28, 2009

I recently bought I new primary sata drive for a MacPro and loaded Leopard on it while keeping a 2ndary internal sata drive ... which included data ... intact.

Now under Leopard, under permissions for the 2ndary internal sata drive, it sees an "unknown" account (which is the previous Tiger owner) and it doesn't allow any writing/ deleting on the 2ndary drive.

I know how to change the permissions and ownership but don't know exactly what Leopard default ownership and permissions I should assign to the 2ndary drive.

The new Home acct name, System, Admin, Everyone etc.
Usually there is a cascading list of 2 or 3 but I can't remember what
they should be.

Hardware :: Adding Time Capsule As Secondary TM Drive

Dec 19, 2008

I recently had to erase the HD on my iMac and do a complete restore from my external Time Machine drive. Luckily everything, including programs, were restored to where they were during the last backup. This mishap underscored the importance of having everything backed-up and made me truly appreciate Time Machine. As a result I'm considering adding Time Capsule as a secondary Time Machine drive (in addition to the G-drive I have connected via firewire),to act as a back-up to the back-up. I was wondering if I'd be able to do that if I install TC using the "Bridge to an existing network" option during setup.

Would I be able to manage my backups by changing the volume in Time Machine's settings from TC to my G-Force HD, or vice versa? To be clear, i want two full back-up records on separate drives at any given time. I am accustomed to doing my back-ups manually as I don't want my back-up HD running continuously or every hour or so as is suggested by Apple. My feeling is that my external HD will last longer by not being powered-on 24/7. Another reason why I like TC over simply getting a second external HD is because of the networking capability of TC. I get a very weak signal as it is in my basement and I'm hopeful this will improve streaming to my ps3 and iPhone when I'm downstairs.

Software :: Cannot Find / Access Secondary Hard Drive?

Nov 20, 2009

I have a G3 mac blue. About 4 years ago my ex-husband installed a new hard drive and upped the memory as far as it would go. I am currently using Mac 4.11 system I think. This morning the computer was making an odd noise and wouldn't move off the screen saver mode. I rebooted. When it came back up, the odd noise was there for a minute or so and then stopped. However, it will only access the original hard drive, which I haven't saved anything on for 3 years. How can I find my secondary hard drive? Incidently I wasn't able to access the old hard drive for about 2 years. Sure it would be nice if i could access the both of them but i just want my new one back!! I live in a small town where no one is mac proficient. I replaced the power unit a year ago myself.

OS X Mavericks :: Consistent Spinning Beachballs In Pages / Numbers / Preview

Aug 29, 2014

I have an early 2008 imac, running Mavericks.I can open existing Pages and Numbers documents and everything seems to work fine. (using Pages 5)But I can't open a new blank document in Pages or Numbers. (I get spinning beachball, 99%+ cpu, must force quit) Also I can use preview to open any document (pages, numbers, text, jpg), but if I try to export as pdf, it freezes using 99%+ cpu, and must be force quit. I deleted and reloaded Pages, also reloaded Mavericks. it didn't work.I replaced the containers and preference files. No difference.Fontbook did find like 100 warnings in my 800 fonts, no errors though. Other weirdness: Quicktime has lots of weird behavior - opening windows for previously viewed videos, cursor unable to operate the controls or close/minimize windows) I have to use quicktime player 7 instead.

OS X Mavericks :: (10.9.3) Colour Wheel Spinning When Opening Files Using Finder

Jun 2, 2014

I am a novice Mac user. I think I was using Mountain Lion (i paid for it - about £20) but upgraded to Mavericks last year when prompted by my software update. I now understand from reading various online posts that this means I am now stuck with it. At first I had lots of problems with PDF files crashing but this has been fixed. Today I am not having a nightmare trying to use Finder. Any time I click on a file or folder the colour wheel spins for about 10-20 seconds. This happens for every command I make. I just tried to access my files directly from the desktop and the same thing happened. I am not sure what to do and I dont want to end up deleting something important!

OS X :: Hard Drive Makes Clicking Sound / Move Apps From Internal Drive To New One?

Now my question is how do i move all my application from the old internal drive to the new internal drive. From what i have researched it seems that using a enclosure is the way to go but all the info i have seen is referring to replacing the drive rather adding a new one.I would like to move everything to the new drive and make that a master. What is the best way to perform this task?

Hardware :: Unable To Transfer Music From External Drive / Reformat The Internal Drive?

Jun 13, 2010

I recently bought a macbook pro and am making the transition from a pc to mac. It's all gone well so far, but I'm not sure what to do with my music. I currently have about 200 gb of music on my external hard drive (connected to my pc.) The internal hard drive on my pc does not have space to accomodate the files on my external.

I do not have the "Copy files to iTunes music folder" currently enabled because my internal doesn't have space. (And I like having the original music files in a separate location as I have over 30,000 songs). I don't know how to transfer my external and music to my macbook, since I will have to reformat the drive (which would erase everything on it, therefore I somehow have to make a backup either on my mac or on my pc. but what to do about the iTunes .xml file and iTunes folder on the internal pc drive??).

IMac :: Second Internal Hard Drive In Place Of Optical Drive?

Feb 5, 2010

I did a search but couldn't find any specific info as related to the 20" (late 2006) iMac. Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. If anyone has any experience or insight regarding this, I would greatly appreciate your input. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?

OS X :: External FW800 Drive Almost As Fast As Internal Laptop Drive?

May 16, 2010

I just bought a 640gig Samsung 2.5 inch / 5400rpm drive and threw it in a FW800 case from Other world computing. Running some test using the QuickBench 4 and AJA system test shows me that this little bugger is almost as quick as my internal drive on my MacBook Pro (Model number: WDC WD6400BEVT-00A0RT0). How can this be???? I did a varity of test with different file sizes and the Samsung get 70 MB/s vs about 84 MB/s for the internal drive.

My internal drive is pretty full vs this external drive that is currently empty. I do a lot of video work / large gigabyte files on the drive so perhaps I have a defrag problem? I really expected my internal drive to blow the FW800 connected Samsung out the water?
