OS X :: How To Change Ownership Of All Files And Folders Under Another User?

Mar 8, 2010

Not too long ago I went through a process of changing my user in OS X to another name. It seemed to go smoothly enough. However many of my old applications are owned by an "_unknown" now. This is fine and dandy, except that every time I go to rename or move something in these places, it either has to authenticate or just tells me I'm not allowed.

What would be a simple, effective way to change ownership on all files/folders tied to "_unknown" to my current user?

Software :: External Hard Drive - Change "Ownership & Permissions"

Jun 22, 2008

I was just playing around with my external hard-drive - the "Ownership & Permissions" section of it's Info - and accidently changed it from "You may Read & Write" to "You have No Access" and while trying to change it back it somehow wouldn't work and then as I tried to open folders inside it, everything was missing inside the folders (presumedly not deleted since there was still 100GB of space used). So I restarted my computer as well as the hard-drive and now it won't even show up on the desktop. The odd thing is I still have it as an icon on my dock and when I click on it to open it, it just says "The application "(null)" cannot be launched. -5000". If you need to know, I have an iMac Version 10.4.11. Does anyone know what is wrong and what I should do to get it all back to normal?

MacBook Pro :: Steps To Transfer Ownership?

I may be giving my macbook pro away as a present (so surprise will be involved). It's approx. 2 years old and there's only a few applications installed on it (I haven't used it much). After I remove the applications, what steps do I take to prepare for the ownership transfer? Do I have to call Apple support for this?

OS X :: How Do I Enable Ownership Of An External Drive?

Jan 30, 2010

I recently bought a new external drive and am trying to put all my old time machine backups on it. I was on the phone with Apple support for a little bit and they said the best way to do this is to just drag and drop the whole backups folder. When I do that, a little window pops up saying that I do not have ownership of the drive, how do I change that?

OS X :: Proper Default Permissions/ Ownership For Secondary Drive?

Oct 28, 2009

I recently bought I new primary sata drive for a MacPro and loaded Leopard on it while keeping a 2ndary internal sata drive ... which included data ... intact.

Now under Leopard, under permissions for the 2ndary internal sata drive, it sees an "unknown" account (which is the previous Tiger owner) and it doesn't allow any writing/ deleting on the 2ndary drive.

I know how to change the permissions and ownership but don't know exactly what Leopard default ownership and permissions I should assign to the 2ndary drive.

The new Home acct name, System, Admin, Everyone etc.
Usually there is a cascading list of 2 or 3 but I can't remember what
they should be.

Applications :: How To Give Ownership Of An Entire Folder Strucrture?

Dec 16, 2009

I have recently started having a problem in that I don't have administrative write ability on certain folder structures. This problem is predominately in folder structures which are associated with a Sync app that I use called Super Flexible File Synchroniser. I am not able to save new files or edited files into this folder structure from any applications on my Mac i.e. Mail, Parallels, Office, iWork. I have had to save it somewhere else on the hard drive, then drag it into the folder I want it in, then Finder asks me for my password to "Authenticate" this change.
Is there a way to give myself ownership of an entire folder structure?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: "Ignore Ownership" Setting Lost After Restart?

Jun 1, 2012

I'm using Lion 10.7.4 with an external Drive on which I've set a partition to store my iPhoto and iTunes Libraries. I called this volume "Media" and checked "ignore ownership ont his volume" as I wanted to share these libraries between my user and my wife's one.Until a few days ago everything ran quite fine, then I noticed I had read errors running my rsync backup. In fact, "ignore ownership" was off, and is reset to off upon each reboot

I haven't searched if there's a way to enable it by using a command line tool, which could be an acceptable workaround by launching this command line at each boot, but I'd be interested in knowing why this is happening, I could try to move all data to another partition forth and back and recreating the volume in between, but as I'm talking about 100+ GB I'd be glad if there's another way?

Software :: How To: Delay Printing Change Name Change Setting Of Printers

Apr 29, 2002

Q1: how can I delay printing? This was possible in OS9.

I have a thermal printer wich permits me to change the ribbon (Black, CMY, CMYK). If I have a mixed type of files to print, I'd put on hold (in the "print" window) the files that requires the unloaded ribbon while waiting for the other to print.

Of course, I can print all the CMYK, wait until it's done then print the B/W ones but I don't find it practical. Or I can also rush to the print center and hope to have the time to suspend manualy the ones that need it.

Q2: Once a printer is created, how can I change the associated ppd? This also was possible with OS9.

Q3: It is possible to change the printer name once it is created?

Software :: Change Permissions Whenever Access And Change By Another Account

Jun 6, 2009

I've been changing the permissions on some of my folders and files in my normal user account so they can be accessed and changed by another account. Problem is, I have a program that saves new files into a particular folder. When it saves the new file, the permissions are the default, meaning I have to change them myself in order to make them writeable by the new account. So my first question is - is there a way to make my first user account always save files with a set of permissions that I specify?

My next question is - what should these permissions be? Both of the accounts are admin accounts. Should I therefore set group to be 'admin' and give rwx permissions to the group? Or is it possible to set owner to 'admin'? Can a file be owned by a group? Looking forward to your answers! This UNIX stuff is fun!

OS X :: Can't Change Em Back After Change Permissions

Dec 12, 2009

On the Get Info tab of my Applications folder I changed the permissions so that I have all the read and write rights of the whole folder. The it somehow changed to Name: system, and the Privilege: Read and Write. I didn't know that I was NEVER supposed to do that until I googled the issue. I googled a lot, and most of the solutions says that I need my mac DVD. I am currently in North Africa visiting my parents, and my Disks are back home. I tried many things, but the more I try, the more I seem to mess up my macbook. I have a macbook white with Mac OS X 10.5.8. Some suggest to go to Terminal, and use chown -R, but as soon as I open Terminal, i get the following:

-------
login: PAM Error (line 400): System error
login: Could not determine audit condition

[Process exited - exit code 1]
-------

I tried many suggestions, namely: "http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=804099&highlight=application+folder+-permissions But I can't use Terminal.......................

MacBook Pro :: Change F Key ?

Apr 2, 2010

I just bought a new MBP 15" from the refurb store. im loving it so far.

But one thing is really ticking me off, big time. There are F keys for Expose (F3) and for Dashboard (F4) but none for spaces!

First, i don't use Dashboard at ALLLL, expose I will use sometimes... but i can just swipe down on the trackpad.

I Went into keyboard shortcuts and made Spaces pop up by pressing F3, but it requires me to press fn+F3 to bring up spaces.

There has gotttttta be a way to change this? On my old mpb I Was so used to just pressing F12 (the only open F key to bring up spaces) but on this one, there is not one "open" F key.

I just reeeeally want to be able to press F3 and F3 only to bring up spaces, U use spaces like 20 times more than expose, and it's really bugging me pressing fn+F3 everytime, when the function of the F3 key alone can easily be accomplished by a downward swipe with all 4 hands on the keyboard.

Or is there a way I can change the 4 finger swipe to bring up spaces instead!

If I simply have to keep pressing fn+F3 I might just live with it, but there has GOTTA be a way to get around this.

MacBook Pro :: Wallpaper Set Up To Change Every 10 Min?

The first picture is my desktop. I currently have my wallpaper set up to change every 10 min. There are 3 pictures that rotate and as you see in the first picture, they are merging together...The second picture just shows some weird 5h*t. This happens almost every where. It happens a lot in YouTube. I have a MacBook pro i7 (2010). It's only 1 month old and this has been happening for like 2 weeks but it does not happen everyday. More like every 2-3 days. I have to restart my computer to fix.
