So I have an external drive that I want to be able to copy some files to. I use it for my Windows PC, and i have some of it set up for time machine too. When I plug it in, Documents, Pictures stuff show up. I can drag files off onto OS X but I cant drop other files on it. It says I only have READ permissions. How do I change this? Fully updated OS X SL.
View 7 RepliesI got a macbook pro and a My Book 1tb. Want to finally put away my old PC (which is running only on UBUNTU) away but I need to get the files off my PC onto the My Book. Well after setting up the time machine and what not I move the HD & connect it to my PC & attempt to drag files onto it. Says it's read only. Tried changing the sharing options to read and write for everyone on my mac. Still the same. Used disk utility to wipe clean the entire HD. Still read only. Posting this on Ubuntu forums but I'm positive the problem is on the Mac.

i backed everything up on an external hard drive so i can keep it until i received my imac. now i have my imac, and when i try to transfer over the files to my imac, or another external hard drive, sometimes the copying stops and says something along the lines of "you do not have permission to copy this file"
so i guess some of my files got messed up, putting them in "Read only" mode.
i know i can go to "Get info" and then manually change it to "read and write" mode but honestly theres so many files it would take a lot of time.
is there a script, or an app i can run that could scan my whole external hard drive so it will go thru each file in their own specific folder and change the permissions to "read all write all" without me doing it manually one by one?
After some various installations and file copy from/to external hard drives i ran the repair permissions on the bootup hard drive.
There was a listing about a mile long. Whoa, that does not look good to me.
So, i ran the persmissions repair again: another mile long listing: yikes.

How many times do you have to run permissions until it just show a few permissions that had to be corrected ? Or is this a sign that the system is in trouble.

I have a external drive that is locked by a permissions error. I need to reset the permissions on this drive. I know it can be done through command line, but I dont know code. Disk Utility only repairs permissions on system files and since there is no system I am hoping there is third party software.

I can share the drive across the wifi network just fine if I have the guest account turned on, but I want to restrict access to certain folders using "sharing only" user accounts.I want to use SMB sharing.What I have is a folder called Movies that I want to share across the wifi with my housemates via a user account called "house" only I have another folder called "iPhone shite" (no kidding) that I want to share via a user account called "devacct" only I have set permissions for Sys Admin(Read and Write). Admin(Write Only Dropbox), and Everyone(No Access)When a user logs into the mac over the wifi, what happens is that even though I have enabled sharing for both users, and turned off the guest account, regardless of what permissions are set for each of these users, "devacct" can see the Movies folder and "house" can see the iPhone shite folder. This is not what I want. What also happens is that when I set the permissions, they do not save even though I click the lock. The extra user permissions disappear and the basic permissions reset to default.

I have recently upgraded my computer. My external hard drive, a LaCie 320GB, is full of stuff that I want to get rid of. Can't delete it. Looked into the permissions and it turns out they belong to an unknown user. I tried clicking the little lock and trying to change permissions, but it will not let me interact with the drop down menu.
I believe there is a terminal command to reset permissions locally, however, I cannot figure out how to do so on an external drive.

I'm having a series of problems. First some intermittent audio problems with Garageband, then, then some external drives won't mount, and now I can't sync to my disk from the iMac. I've run Disk Utitilies a few times and when I do Verify Disk Permissions, it finds a list of things to fix, I then hit Repair Disk Permissions and it fixes them, and then hit Verify Disk, and it say the disk appears ok. When I do Verify Disk Permissions again though, it finds another long list of things to fix. Is this serious? What should my next step be? Should I reinstall the entire system?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a g5 ppc running the newest OSX. Somehow my startup folder got corrupted and my computer would not start up. so I did a restore from time machine. The restore worked ok. I have 2 external hard drives attached to my computer, one for time machine and one for iTunes and movies. After restore and restart my computer said the hard drive attatched could not be repaired by disk utility. I did not ask it to fix anything. Now, I don't have permission to write to my external hard drive on the non time machine hard drive. When I get info, the lock on the bottom is not available, and I can't modify anything. Can I fix this by going into the terminal?

On my macbook pro laptop, I can only read. It will not let me write or erase anything to the drive. Does this have to do with the drives formatting? View 14 Replies View RelatedI just got hit with a double whammy. :Imac running Panther did something odd to the it's external drive. That was formatted fat 32. I plan to see if anyone in the nearby computer repair class can recover those files, but in the meantime (days!) the gremlin also hit the macbook, putting it in range of a spill. So now the only backups I have are on the second external drive formatted with a mac format on the macbook. This one was done with 2 partitions, one for Time Machine, one for the stuff I was yanking over from the other hard drive.
So now I find that Imac can't even SEE the second drive. (Not that I expected it to see or recognize Time Machine, just the other part.) My macbook is on downtime until it gets checkup/cleaning (with all mac places nearby apparently closed thru New Years and classes I need it for starting right after) Does anyone know a way to get "Ye Old Imac" to see the other drive? Is there a driver or something? I know it's very hard to find older software (most online sites don't go back past Tiger), but it is a mac format for goodness sake! I can't even be 100% sure if it's something to do with a newer mac format for the external drive or "Ye Old Imac" is just being grumpy. It seems to see the other USB stuff but it has been known to lose touch with them.
I have an external hard drive, it's formatted in NTFS, sort of like a 'bridge' between my Macbook and my Windows machine. I was able to write to the NTFS drive from my Mac using MacFUSE and NTFS-3G. A few days ago, the hard drive showed up as 'read-only', and is still that way now. I've tried repairing disk permissions, reinstalling the NTFS applications, nothing seems to change the write permissions back.

When I attach to a usb ion my windows PC it wont read or even pick up either external discs, is this normal. How do I get files from my mac to windows based PC, it does work using a memory stick. View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently borrowed my brother's laptop to use as a media station for listening to music from, and watching movies, in order to free up some space on my main macbook. In trying to migrate some files over, I discovered that my hard drive, a 320 GB WD Elements drive, is having some problems which I've never encountered before. It has always worked fine in the past, but now I can't transfer any files to or from it, from either computer. In all of my troubleshooting, I've gotten various errors, (-36, -50), and various messages saying how the device can't be read or written from, or how some files contian unreadable data, etc.Disk Utility found an unused node when verifying the disk, and notified me that the disk needed to be repaired.I then used Disk Utility, which said it was able to successfully repair it, but the same problem remains, and after verifying the disk, it still says it needs to be repaired.I've tried to find any files that may be causing the problem, and was finally able to delete a seemingly troublesome file that was stuck in my trash bin from the external drive after trying various apps, (ie Trash It, Cocktail, What's Keeping Me?).This didn't end up solving anything...I've used terminal to eliminate some other potentially problematic files, with no luck still, and I'm not too confident with Terminal so I don't want to be messing around too much without more guidance.
I've used Disk Warrior to try to solve the problem, but still with no success.When I use the app to Check All Files and Folders, it does so for only a few seconds, then reports that "An unexpected error ocurred while attempting to perform file operations" for several files, and that several files' "Property list is damaged and cannot be repaired". When using Disk Warrior to REBUILD the drive, the app pauses for about 15 seconds, then says that it can't be rebuilt because it is in use.Again, I've used the What's Keeping Me? app to kill any activity with the drive, and the same error occurs.I've spent a lot of time trying to sort this out.

I am copying files from older DVDS onto an external hard drive attached to my computer. All the files are coming across as read only. How can this files be easily be made read/write?
There are a very large number of files in many folders, so save as or anything similiar is not an option.
I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD.
When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??

Ok so I have an 8800 GS imac, 3.06 intel core 2, 4 gigs ram. Running snow lepord. I need to resolve an issue where I can not get into OSX. At first I got error messeges saying my external HDD could not read, now it looks like its my primary drive because when I restarted I got the progress bar under the apple logo, indicating that something is wrong with the OS. The bar when to full 100% but then I got stuck at never ending spinning wheel. I restarted and no more progress bar but still the spining wheel of death. I really dont mind refomrating its just that I had some important text documents and other files that I cant get back without recoving them some how. How to proceed? I held down cmd v or s (i forgot) on startup and got a black screen with several problem statements. One reads the system boot strapper has crashed trace BPT trap.
