I have a external drive that is locked by a permissions error. I need to reset the permissions on this drive. I know it can be done through command line, but I dont know code. Disk Utility only repairs permissions on system files and since there is no system I am hoping there is third party software.
View 1 RepliesI use an external hard drive for Time Machine backups and to store some larger video files in a folder called Videos. The Videos folder on the external drive is now locked and I can't unlock it. I go to Get Info, hit the lock icon and enter my password, but the "Locked" checkbox is greyed out in the General section. In the Sharing and Permissions section, instead of displaying my name, it says "Fetching . . ." and I can't change the Privilege from "Write Only".

Here in the office we have 2 macs and a server. When I create any kind of file (Photoshop, After Effects, FCP etc.) The default permissions are locked down for others and is locked up. See pic. How can I open all this up so it can be read write for anyone by default?

When I plug it in, Documents, Pictures stuff show up. I can drag files off onto OS X but I cant drop other files on it. It says I only have READ permissions. How do I change this? Fully updated OS X SL.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've restored my Mac OS x (10.6.8) from a time machine backup after reformatting the iMac's hard drive.After restoring all my files the external drive that time machine uses is locked and I cannot seem to get it to unlock itself. I've tried resetting the permissions on the "get info" panel without any success (Did a restart after every change- it just seems to go back to custom priviledges). I've also toggled the "Ignore Ownership" toggle on and off- again followed by a restart each time.
The external drive is connected by Firewire 800 and is a RAID 1 configuration using two 2Tb drives.I don't want to lose my existing time machine files on that external disc- hense formatting it is out of the question..

I inherited a 3+ year old MacBook (2GHz Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM) that was working fine until I dropped it! After that, it was very slow to start up and wouldn't open some applications, so I bought a new hard drive and reinstalled the OS and now it's back on its proverbial feet. The problem is, since it was actually not my computer to begin with, when I booted up from the 10.6 SL DVD, I opted to do a full install from the disc and re-register it under my name. Then I used migration assistant to transfer all my applications and data from a Time Machine backup. Now all the disk permissions are off and I'm locked out of some applications and folders. I tried using DiskWarrior, OnyX, and the SL DVD to repair permissions, but they never actually repaired, just detected.

When I try to run iTunes, it claims that iTunes is on a locked disk or that I don't have write permissions. I've went into the secutiry tab and such and gave myself full control, yet it still isn't working. It also won't let me unclick the "Read Only" box. I'm on Windows 7.

After some various installations and file copy from/to external hard drives i ran the repair permissions on the bootup hard drive.
There was a listing about a mile long. Whoa, that does not look good to me.
So, i ran the persmissions repair again: another mile long listing: yikes.

How many times do you have to run permissions until it just show a few permissions that had to be corrected ? Or is this a sign that the system is in trouble.

I'm having trouble setting the sharing priveleges on an external drive connected to my mac with snow leopard.My Drive is an external NTFS formatted drive. I can share the drive across the wifi network just fine if I have the guest account turned on, but I want to restrict access to certain folders using "sharing only" user accounts.I want to use SMB sharing.What I have is a folder called Movies that I want to share across the wifi with my housemates via a user account called "house" only I have another folder called "iPhone shite" (no kidding) that I want to share via a user account called "devacct" only I have set permissions for Sys Admin(Read and Write). Admin(Write Only Dropbox), and Everyone(No Access)When a user logs into the mac over the wifi, what happens is that even though I have enabled sharing for both users, and turned off the guest account, regardless of what permissions are set for each of these users, "devacct" can see the Movies folder and "house" can see the iPhone shite folder. This is not what I want. What also happens is that when I set the permissions, they do not save even though I click the lock. The extra user permissions disappear and the basic permissions reset to default.

I have a mini that had the latest Lion Server installed and was being configured, I know very little about servers and it would appear my friends who were helping set things up know even less. As I have now found out tomy cost. This was a refurbished MMserver direct from Apple - preinstalled with Lion Server. After it was almost configured with admin, users, filesharing, mail, ical etc and ssl authentication, a bunch of new users, groups etc suddenly appeared in the admin interface. All these were deleted to leave only the ones that had been set up.
Now the users we set up along with admin can log and use the machine as a user but cannot do anything that will affect the systemas they do not have permissions. Even the names with server permissions have been restricted access When logging into the server app I get the following message. Msg: This server is not supported. Server supports servers running Mac OS X 10.7.
If I go into Apple Software Update it wants an administrator's name and password...the one used to log into the system in the first place no longer works. Given there is no data / files of importance on this machine, I thought I would use Disk Utility to start again but hit the same issue of not having permissions. I have tried all the names and passwords I know and which were used and non have worked. If I then use cmd+r on boot up nothing happens it just continues to boot to the log in screen,
I looked in server admin and nothing is registered and when i add the server name..it just searches but does not do anything. How can I get this back to to the start - a virgin system....so I can start setting it up?

I have recently upgraded my computer. My external hard drive, a LaCie 320GB, is full of stuff that I want to get rid of. Can't delete it. Looked into the permissions and it turns out they belong to an unknown user. I tried clicking the little lock and trying to change permissions, but it will not let me interact with the drop down menu.
I believe there is a terminal command to reset permissions locally, however, I cannot figure out how to do so on an external drive.

I'm having a series of problems. First some intermittent audio problems with Garageband, then, then some external drives won't mount, and now I can't sync to my disk from the iMac. I've run Disk Utitilies a few times and when I do Verify Disk Permissions, it finds a list of things to fix, I then hit Repair Disk Permissions and it fixes them, and then hit Verify Disk, and it say the disk appears ok. When I do Verify Disk Permissions again though, it finds another long list of things to fix. Is this serious? What should my next step be? Should I reinstall the entire system?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a g5 ppc running the newest OSX. Somehow my startup folder got corrupted and my computer would not start up. so I did a restore from time machine. The restore worked ok. I have 2 external hard drives attached to my computer, one for time machine and one for iTunes and movies. After restore and restart my computer said the hard drive attatched could not be repaired by disk utility. I did not ask it to fix anything. Now, I don't have permission to write to my external hard drive on the non time machine hard drive. When I get info, the lock on the bottom is not available, and I can't modify anything. Can I fix this by going into the terminal?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was just playing around with my external hard-drive - the "Ownership & Permissions" section of it's Info - and accidently changed it from "You may Read & Write" to "You have No Access" and while trying to change it back it somehow wouldn't work and then as I tried to open folders inside it, everything was missing inside the folders (presumedly not deleted since there was still 100GB of space used). So I restarted my computer as well as the hard-drive and now it won't even show up on the desktop. The odd thing is I still have it as an icon on my dock and when I click on it to open it, it just says "The application "(null)" cannot be launched. -5000". If you need to know, I have an iMac Version 10.4.11. Does anyone know what is wrong and what I should do to get it all back to normal?

In order to keep track of what i have copied and what I haven't i thought it would be good to delete the stuff of my windows hard drive once it was copied. I have a Mac Pro and suddenly it won't copy files from any external drive, or write them either. The drives mount and show up in fiinder, and they start copying, but after about 30 seconds they error out with "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 50).
It has done this on two different Mac Pros and 3 different external drives. I don't remember this haqppening before. I have Paragon NTFS running on both Macs and they have worked flawlessly for maqny months but now they won't complete.

I'm trying to edit a .plist file within a application Package (through "Show Package Content"). I edit the file in my favorite XML editor great, but when I go to save it the file is locked. How can I work around this?

The last couple of times I have woken my MBP up a box has popped up with a big red sign in the middle saying my external hard drive was removed unexpectedly and could have caused loss of data. I know this is not healthy and I would like to stop it doing this as soon as possible. It is connected via firewire 800 and is a western digital 250 gig my book pro if that makes any difference. I close the lid of my laptop with it still on and connected and everything is supposed to sleep. It used to work fine, I would open the lid and everything would wake up and I could do what I was doing before with no error messages and the hard drive would still be mounted on the desktop.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a USB 2.0 hard drive that I have been using to back up movie files. It has let me transfer files from my Macbook Pro HD to it hundreds of times without any problems.
I have this .mkv file that keeps giving me an error when I try to transfer it to my external. I get "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code 0)".
I have transferred plenty of .mkv files to my external with no problems. All other files work fine when I transfer them. It will let me move my .mkv file around my Macbook Pro's internal hard drive but it won't let me transfer it to the external.
I cannot see my external hard drive. I cannot see it in finder. When I started disk utility it says I need to repair but than it says it cannot be repaired. Is there a way I can reach the data? I don't know what happened to the disk.

I have an external 2TB Western Digital Caviar drive hooked up to my 2006 iMac through a docking bay and USB 2.0. I'm running 10.6.6 and the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. It's my media and backup drive and I'm always copying stuff to and from it. All was well and good with the setup and I had no problems for probably 5 or 6 months. Just around Christmas, though, I started getting alerts when trying to copy files over to the drive. Error Code: -50.
Basically, I can still view/read files on the drive and play songs in iTunes, but if I try to rip a CD, iTunes hangs and dies. If I try to copy any file over using the Finder or empty the trash with files from that drive, I get the -50 code and alert. A restart will fix the problem for a little while but then it's back after maybe 30 minutes or so that's obviously not a good long-term solution. This page claims it is an "Error in user parameter list" but I have no idea what that means. I've done a bunch of Googling, but people are saying it's anything from problems with networked NTFS drives (which it's not for me) or that it's a disk permissions issue (no bootable system on the drive).

I start up the hard drive, then it loads up fine and the Mac recognizes it just fine. As soon as I try to copy something - doesn't matter how big it is - I get an error and at the end it says "(Error code - 36)". It just says the file cannot be read or written. Weird thing is I can access everything on the hard drive. Anyone have any tips before I try reformatting the HD?

So here's the deal: I have a 64Gb iphone with 1GB available, and a 256Gb macbook retina with 17Gb free space.
The iphone backups are taking up a lot of space on the macbook. I looked into moving the backup files to an external drive and using a soft link to link it all together, but that's a lot more complicated than is necessary, so I just pressed option when opening itunes and created a new library on the external drive with 1TB free space (as reported by Finder).
I can verify that the computer is using the external library as when I transfer purchases, that library on the external grows in size And doesn't have any of my old content. However, when I try to back up the phone (which is around 30GB) I get the error message that itunes cannot backup the phone because there is not enough space left on the computer, even though the external disk has a terabyte left. I know it's because the macintosh hd has only 17 Gb, is there any way to get round it?

I am trying to copy my aperture 3 library (126GB) to an external hard drive to free up space on my local hard drive.
When it is at the final 1gb of the process I recieve an error message:
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Aperture 3 Library” can’t be read or written.

I have repaired the aperture library and repaired permissions and this did not work.
