OS X :: Master Boot Record Not Found / Put It Back?

Jan 30, 2010

Ok here's the situation. I'm trying to fix my brothers laptop at the moment and reinstall Leopard. He installed ubuntu and it seems to have deleted the Master Boot record. I've managed to get Leopard to install but the mouse clicker doesn't work. I've managed to narrow down the problem to the MBR, the master boot record.

In terminal I've typed in sudo fdisk -u /dev/rdisk0

This has come up with the error "master boot record not found". I'm now trying to find a way to put the Master boot record back.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this?

I am looking for a used Mac for my folks, and someone has posted an imac that they have converted to a PC, having change the master boot record. OS X V10.7 Lion :: Change From Master Boot Record To GUID Scheme?

Jun 6, 2012

I've downloaded Lion and the first "complaint" the installation software has is that neither my Mac hard drive nor Time Machine drive uses the GUID partition scheme. The software instructs me to use Disk Utility to select the appropriate format but Disk Utility states that I can't re-size the partition because it uses the Master Boot Record scheme. Further, it tells me that the drive can't be erased because it's the start-up disk.

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed on my MacBook (Core 2 Duo, 4 GB). The Mac HD has 220GB available.I waited for Lion to be reasonably fault-free and carefully looked at Lion's requirements only to find out too late about this GUID scheme business. I haven't seen anything about this requirement until I tried to install. I have great fear of re-formatting the drive as that always seems to be the beginning of many problems that take months to resolve. Maybe the choices are to forget Lion or get a new drive and format it to GUID before restoring from my Time Machine

Power Mac G5 :: Boot From Slave Or Master - Performance Options

Oct 25, 2007

I have a 1.8 duel G5, 3 gig of ram, and 2 internal hard drives, a 120 gig and an 80 gig. My question: does anyone know if it makes a difference (performance wise) which drive I boot from? The 80 was the original boot drive, but due to space problems, now I boot from the 120. I've run every diagnistic imaginable, including Diskwarrior. I have the identical machine at work, and that one just seems snappier. I maintain both machines the same, cocktail, MacJanitor etc. There is plenty of room on both drives. So the last thing I can think of is the master/slave thing.

I've given up waiting for a new desktop and they are priced out of this word.

I had a presentation today, and plugged my MacBook Pro ('06 version, and 10.4.10) laptop into a projector. Right as I did that, things went a little crazy, the audio was coming out with hissing, it was running very slow, and overall just went from running great to disfunctional. It finally froze, and I shut it off. A couple of hours later, I'm failing to get past the blue screen during the start-up. When i run in safe mode, its just shuts off while i'm holding the shift key

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Downgrading Back To 10.6 - Support Files Could Not Be Found?

Apr 30, 2012

OS X 10.7 is clearly the most advanced operating system ever (until the next one) but I'm not digging it at all. I wanna go back to 10.6. I still have my 10.6 disk. Upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7., and am now on 10.7.3. Tried running the 10.6 install disk at boot-up and the 10.6 install was all going fine but then nearly at the end Installer said "Installation Failed. Some support files couldn't be found."

Windows On Mac :: No Audio Devices Found In Boot Camp Vista On New Mini

Jun 29, 2010

i'm a HUGE gamer, so the first thing I did once I loaded this new computer up was install my copy of Windows Vista on it using Boot Camp Assistant. The installation went completely smoothly, so I then proceeded to install the Boot Camp Drivers onto my new and fresh and clean Windows Installation.

I restarted the computer and everything seemed to be in working order...but there are two relatively MAJOR problems:

One, the one that is the most pressing, is the sound. When I started up after installing all of the boot camp drivers, I couldn't get a single audio device to get recognized by my Vista Home Premium installation. I tried disabling and re-disabling other drivers in the Device Manager, and when I try to download new drivers for the one audio device that has an error sign next to it, Vista claims that it is already updated to the latest drivers, so it will not install new ones. I even went onto cirrus' website to download their official drivers, and the same thing happened.

MacBook :: Won't Boot / Tried To Start It Back Up It Would Not Boot Up?

Feb 10, 2009

Ok so my macbook just froze up on me, and I shut it off manually. However, when I tried to start it back up it would not boot up. I am just receiving a message telling me " You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button. "I did what the message told me to do, and when I started the computer back up I just received the same exact message. I tried to take the battery out and hold down the power button to discharge any electricity in the laptop, and then I plugged in the power cable with the battery still out, and I am still receiving the same error message.I have tried the same process a couple of times and put the battery back in and then I decided to try inserting the Installation DVD, and it did nothing different then what I have been getting.

Mac Pro :: Try To Boot It Back Up, It Comes On And Chimes And Hear The HDD Spin Up?

Jun 16, 2009

I'm having a worrisome problem with my MDD dual 1ghz g4. It will sometimes turn off when in sleep mode. When I try to boot it back up, it comes on and chimes and I can hear the HDD spin up, but then it will just turn off. Usually after about 3 or 4 attempts it will boot up just fine.I thought it might be the battery on the logic board, since the clock would re-set every time the machine was powered down, so I replaced it. That fixed the clock issue, but the machine is still turning off and taking several attempts to start back up.

I have no idea what is causing this. One thing I do know is that this house is pretty old and the wiring seems iffy. I have a battery backup on another machine and sometimes it will start beeping like it's lost power, but it's still plugged in and the light indicating that it's receiving power is on, so I think sometimes the power from the wall fluctuates. This might explain the MDD spontaneously shutting off, but does it explain the difficulty restarting?BTW, I searched the forums to see if anyone had asked this question, but found no threads,

PowerPC :: Unable To Boot Powerbook / Gray Screen Turns Computer Back Off

Nov 1, 2006

So I've got a powerbook G4, thats 8 days past its warranty. Conveniently, it now won't turn on. It won't wont boot from CD. If I turn it on, I get a gray screen that usually just turns my computer back off, if thats not the case I get a screen that shows the finder icon and a question mark and then turns off.

All it will do is boot into open firmware mode. Currently the install disc is inside of it and I've tried booting the cd using "cd:, bxi" and "dir hd", and it can't open both. Does anyone know how to wipe the HD, and start the installer using firmware? Otherwise, I think I'll have to take out the harddrive and plug it into an external case and then wipe it.

Mac Pro :: Jumper Set To Master Or Slave?

Jan 15, 2009

I just was given a G4 that is not recognizing the Hard Drive. I was able to connect a drive through fire wire to load Tiger OS, but I still can't seem to figure out why I can't see the internal hard drive on the desktop or why it didn't pop up when asked where to install the OS. There is a hard drive there and it is connected, but how do I know which is the correct connection?

By reading some other threads, I saw that someone asked if the Jumper was set to Master or Slave? If this is indeed something that this could be, how can I determine that?
