OS X :: Mac PC - Changing Master Boot Record?
Mar 18, 2009
I am looking for a used Mac for my folks, and someone has posted an imac that they have converted to a PC, having change the master boot record. They say I have to take it to the apple store to get it changed back, but couldn't I just start it up in target disk mode, and reformat the internal drive use carbon copy cloner or something like that?

Ok here's the situation. I'm trying to fix my brothers laptop at the moment and reinstall Leopard. He installed ubuntu and it seems to have deleted the Master Boot record. I've managed to get Leopard to install but the mouse clicker doesn't work. I've managed to narrow down the problem to the MBR, the master boot record.
In terminal I've typed in sudo fdisk -u /dev/rdisk0
This has come up with the error "master boot record not found". I'm now trying to find a way to put the Master boot record back.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this?

I want to delete a partition and create a new one, but I need to be able to click option in able to do this. For whatever reason, disk utility will not let me edit my external in any way without deleting the whole thing which I do not want to do.

I've downloaded Lion and the first "complaint" the installation software has is that neither my Mac hard drive nor Time Machine drive uses the GUID partition scheme. The software instructs me to use Disk Utility to select the appropriate format but Disk Utility states that I can't re-size the partition because it uses the Master Boot Record scheme. Further, it tells me that the drive can't be erased because it's the start-up disk.
I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed on my MacBook (Core 2 Duo, 4 GB). The Mac HD has 220GB available.I waited for Lion to be reasonably fault-free and carefully looked at Lion's requirements only to find out too late about this GUID scheme business. I haven't seen anything about this requirement until I tried to install. I have great fear of re-formatting the drive as that always seems to be the beginning of many problems that take months to resolve. Maybe the choices are to forget Lion or get a new drive and format it to GUID before restoring from my Time Machine
Info:MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I have a 1.8 duel G5, 3 gig of ram, and 2 internal hard drives, a 120 gig and an 80 gig. My question: does anyone know if it makes a difference (performance wise) which drive I boot from? The 80 was the original boot drive, but due to space problems, now I boot from the 120. I've run every diagnistic imaginable, including Diskwarrior. I have the identical machine at work, and that one just seems snappier. I maintain both machines the same, cocktail, MacJanitor etc. There is plenty of room on both drives. So the last thing I can think of is the master/slave thing.

My G5 2.5 has sprung a leak and is now kaput (no parts, no one can service). What I's like to do is pull the drive with some legacy stuff I need (Quickbooks and years of business stuff) and boot a new mac mini or imac from this drive. I've given up waiting for a new desktop and they are priced out of this word.

I have change my C: drive name (was in past "Untitled"... eww) and it shows up changed as this new volume name on both my Mac and Windows sides. I also changed my Mac side harddrive name and it shows up changed on my Mac and PC sides. So this is all good and correct.
But when I boot up holding option, and am able in choosing which volume to use (Mac side or Windows Partition) the Mac side choice will be named whatever I have named the main drive which is what I expect. But the Windows Partition will just be named "Windows". It will not be named what my C: drive is named (which is what shows up on my Mac side desktop and what I want it to show up as).
This probably all sounds silly and of trivial but it would mean much to me if any one knew a way in changing so that when I choose which drive to use "Windows" will show up as C: "Drivename" would be much appreciated. If this could be a complicating issue I will let you know that the harddrive name for my Windows side contains a ' if that would cause a problem (but my Mac side name does too so it doesn't make much sense to me).

I have the latest generation Mac Pro with the stock drive. That's the 300GB WDC drive. It seems a little slow in terms of response time and at times loud. I have been eyeing the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000340AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive. I could either replace the stock boot disk with the 7200.11 and use the stock disk as a scratch disk. If so, what it's the best way to move over my boot data from one disk to another? (if possible)
Or I could just use the 7200.11 to store my applications and run them from that disk. Is that as easy to just copy over the Applications to the other drive? PS: I use my Mac Pro for Final Cut for HD (audio/video) editing and Web development (Photoshop, Textmate) and run Windows under Parallels for IE6/7/8 testing.

I have a Mac Pro from 2006, and it has hard drives in all four bays. The first drive is the 250gb default drive from Apple. The rest are Seagate and Samsung. The setup is: 250 (Mac) / 320 (Empty) / 750 (Backup) / 1000 (Media) The 250gb is getting full every once in a while, and I might wish to replace it with another 1000 or even the new seagate 1.5TB one. Whatever .. but since it only has the OS + Program files and some stuff in /home, I want to use the bigger drives for the data. And use the 320gb as the boot drive.
Move (clone) the 250gb to the 320gb Reboot and boot from the 320gb, replacing the 250gb. Which I can then make empty and use until I replace it with a 1000gb drive. I can use CCC to clone the 250gb to the 320gb. But is that enough? How can I then reboot and have the 320gb as if it was the 250gb,. And how can I be certain it is booting from the cloned 320gb, or the original 250gb once I am back into OSX? And can I then repartition the 250gb and still reboot, or will this ruin the master boot record or boot menu setup, etc?
I have no experience with this (yet). And am afraid to end up with a non booting system and a long night of trying to restore using the retail disk for leopard. I hope I am making sense. I just want to move my boot to the 320, and get more space for my boot hd.

So I have Windows 7 installed with bootcamp, and of course OS X. But, when I turn on my computer, if I do not hold down the option key, my MBP automatically loads Windows. Is there a way to change it so that it will automatically load Mac OS X if I do not hold the option key?

I have my laptop which is Powerbook G5 version 10.3.9 Panther. For the last two months the PB didn't boot up and it was beeping three times and white lid blinking. After going through internet i notice the problem was RAM and i need to change it. I bought another RAM 1GB (the old one was 512MB) and inserted it in the lower RAM slot.
Thank GOD the mac boot up properly and everything was fine. I charged it to full capacity and shut it down. The next day i started my mac as usual but surprisingly it beeps three times and it didn't boot up again.I open the RAM cover tried to remove it and replaces it again but it didn't work out and i am totally devastated and i don't know what to do any more. The brand name of the RAM i used is TRANSCEND.

I just was given a G4 that is not recognizing the Hard Drive. I was able to connect a drive through fire wire to load Tiger OS, but I still can't seem to figure out why I can't see the internal hard drive on the desktop or why it didn't pop up when asked where to install the OS. There is a hard drive there and it is connected, but how do I know which is the correct connection?
By reading some other threads, I saw that someone asked if the Jumper was set to Master or Slave? If this is indeed something that this could be, how can I determine that?

I have seen a few videos about mastering and gave it a try myself. It can be done by clicking the master tab, then going to the Input 1-2 column setting and then clicking setting - mastering, etc.
When I first did this a few weeks ago, there were many options such as hip hop mastering, electronic mastering, etc.
Now, when I do so, I have different - much less enticing options and have no idea where the good ones went.

I have an existing macbook 2007 model, and am looking to upgrade. Would you:
A). Keep the MacBook for now and get a new iMac i5 (so you had a big one for home, and could carry the small one around to school etc)
B). Upgrade to a new MacBook Pro when they get released and just have 1 computer.
I figured that if I sold my macbook it would bring the MacBook Pro option down to the same price as the iMac (taking into account increased amount for Applecare etc.). So out the pocket choices A and B would cost within a hundred bucks. I do need a laptop for my master's program, but it's mostly taking notes etc. So any laptop would do, but at home I play games and mess with video and photography, so would like a computer that could handle that as well.

I recently purchased a used imac g4 from a friend but I cannot seem to get it started. I tried to log in with the master password but do not have the password or install disk for OSX. I asked my friend about it and he said the same thing, he lost the user and master password including install disk. I took the comp from his hands anyway, it's in new condition and he never really used it, just forgot about it I suppose.
It also seems that on startup the mac searches for disks and servers, so it could of been a part of a network system? I would like to know if there is a way to get into the bios and reset the whole system without password prompts and all that. Which is the best way to do this? I have the mac osx install disk from my ibook but I tried to boot the disk and it's not booting. I also have the install disk for os tiger and that's not booting either. There must be a super secure lock on the system.

We migrated MobileMe family pack accounts (1 master, 2 sub-accounts) to iCloud when iCloud became available. Everything seems to work ok except when a sub-account holder logs into iCloud on the web. The welcome screen shows the name of the master account holder instead of their name. Seems like a bug from the migration from MobileMe.
