OS X V10.7 Lion :: Downgrading Back To 10.6 - Support Files Could Not Be Found?
Apr 30, 2012
OS X 10.7 is clearly the most advanced operating system ever (until the next one) but I'm not digging it at all. I wanna go back to 10.6. I still have my 10.6 disk. Upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7., and am now on 10.7.3. Tried running the 10.6 install disk at boot-up and the 10.6 install was all going fine but then nearly at the end Installer said "Installation Failed. Some support files couldn't be found."

I "downgraded" my computer back to leopard (10.5.8) from snow leopard (10.6.1) via the SL install disk and a time machine backup. Now my VMware Fusion virtual machine for Windows XP is missing in action. Where can I find this on my Time Machine backup so that I can see if I can restore it?

A few days ago, ClamXav detected infected files when scanning my mail data base. One of wich was a phishing kind of mesage, and the other was defined as a trojan. It turns out that they were mesages from 2009, by the time when i had a G5 Power PC. I've never open theme, nor clicked the links attached. Now i have a new Mac, but those mails are still in the data base; i think they migrated from my imap account. Any way, i red the ClamXav developper's page and he says that its not advisable to trash out or put this kind of files into quarantine. it bothers me that they still remain in my user's library.

Upgraded to the lastest OS in December and its utterly killed my 1st gen MBA - within 15-20 minutes of watching video its operating at 100 degrees and thermally cuts out. Genius bar has replaced the thermal module and then advised me to go back to a previous OS as they reckon the machine simply can't handle the OS. I'm pretty sure it had Leopard on when I bought it, and I soon after upgraded to Snow Leopard. Can I get hold of installation disks anywhere? I've probably got the originals somewhere, but as half my stuff is in storage, not sure where. Â
Other thing is how do I physically do this? Whilst I've got an external disk to backup to as I don't have the airport extreme I used to have it connected through with me, time machine isn't recognising it as the back up. Presumably if I do back up I won't then be able to restore files anyway to an older OS?Â
My superdrive isn't with me either, so can I load the files from the disk to a USB stick and boot/install from there? I'm going to manually back up and will lose a load of software, but frankly the machine is useless now anyway so I've got to try something. No idea what it will do to my iphones and ipad apps, but again, I'm pretty well stuffed for a laptop as is..Â

I have recently downgraded my OSX from 10.9 to 10.8.5. I downloaded Mountain Lion on another computer running 10.9, and I partitioned a hard drive to boot the software. I was able to run 10.8.5 fine, but finder never opens. When I click on finder, open trash, or open a folder on the desktop, finder becomes the current application, but nothing else happens.Â
I am running an early 2009 iMac with a 20 inch display.Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 DueMemory: 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 (originally 2 GB)Â What works:I can spotlight search any file or applicationI can open any file on my desktop and any application on my dockI can view files in file browsers (such as selecting an image to upload)Â What doesn't work:I can't open finder, trash, or any folders on the desktop.
Preview crashes when I try to open a file.Menu bar items in the dock display differently (see picture)  What I've tried:Creating a new account (still the same)Setting finder to assign to different desktops (doesn't change anything)Hiding and showing finder (no change)Repairing disk permissions in disk utility (nothing)Relaunching finder (nothing)executing killall dock; killall finder in terminal (nothing)booting the mac in safe mode (still doesn't work)deleting finder settings via terminal (no change) Also, when I booted up the mac, it said that the boot-up failed. However, it opened up 10.8.5. Other notes:All administrator accounts were changed to standard accounts. When I create a new desktop, it is labeled as DesktopNum.

I'm one of the unlucky owners of Macbook Retina 15" Mid 2012. I was very satisfied with this computer, everything was great, untill I installed OS X Mavericks. My computer started to have GPU Panics all the time under some "heavier" usage like watching long videos on YouTube. I googled this problem and then I saw that I wasn't the only one, many people had problems after upgrading to Mavericks. I also read that downgrading to Mountain Lion solves the problem, but after the Internet Recovery update, when you are restoring your mac, it restores as Mavericks. I read Apple instruction how to revert os x, but it requires Time Machine backup from Mountain Lion, I already downloaded ML Installer from AppStore but I don't know how to install it.Â

Ok here's the situation. I'm trying to fix my brothers laptop at the moment and reinstall Leopard. He installed ubuntu and it seems to have deleted the Master Boot record. I've managed to get Leopard to install but the mouse clicker doesn't work. I've managed to narrow down the problem to the MBR, the master boot record.
In terminal I've typed in sudo fdisk -u /dev/rdisk0
This has come up with the error "master boot record not found". I'm now trying to find a way to put the Master boot record back.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this?

The backup disk image 'Volumes/Data/John's iMac.sparsebundle' could not be accessed(error-1).
Have tried remounting Time capsule in preferences. Have run Disc utility to verify 'Time Machine Backups'. Sparsebundle is greyed out in Disc Utility.
Time capsule has 1.37Gb free space and is connected via wireless and has a wireless express as a client. Would deleting the last back up be of assistance assuming corruption?

I moved my iphoto library to an external HD (WD Passport) and everything seemed to be working fine. Recently I added more pictures to iphoto, importing them from my camera, and when I tried to view there files, the originals on the passport hard drive, they weren't there. I went into iphoto and clicked on one of the photos and went to show file and it took me to volumes coming from the mac HD but it showed the iphoto library with all the originals. I'm confused where the volumes folder is located and how iphoto put all my photos there and not on my passport. What I should do to put all the photo folders in the same spot on my passport HD?

So, we have a bunch of computers that we need to install Mavericks on. After the second or third download, we decided to try to be smart and copy the installer to an external hard drive before installing. Now, when trying to install it on some of the remaining computers, it doesn't get very far and then comes up with an error that says something about required system files not being found. I will get the exact wording later when I go back to the lab. The installer already deleted itself from the other computer.Â
You must understand, downloading a >5GB file on a 25KBPS internet connection is agonizing, and these remaining computers need to get Mavericks on them soon.

Recently I have been trying to install Snow Leopard to no avail. First, I attempted to install it from the dual layer disc I have, and when that wasn't working I partitioned my external hard drive and created an installation image from which to boot. I keep receiving the error: "Installer could not copy the necessary support files". I have scoured the web trying to find the solution, and most people have pointed toward a hardware problem. I verified the HDD and I played with the RAM configuration. Remember reported that one of my 1gb modules was faulty, so I took that out and I still keep getting the same error.

I understand the "can't" in downgrading from 10.7 Lion to 10.6 SL, so I'd like to pose a related question.Â
Assume one has an iMac running 10.6.8 and it dies, and that AppleCare has expired. Assume there is a full TimeMachine backup and two current bootable clones (SuperDuper) as well. One orders a new iMac and it comes with 10.7 installed. I take it you can't clone over the old 10.6, or use Time Machine to make the new iMac like the old iMac in so far as data, preferences, bookmarks and so forth are concerened. Am I correct in this understanding?Â
If so, how would one, having 3 current 10.6.8 backups, get the new 10.7 iMac set up with data, photos, user preferences, bookmarks and so forth from the clone or the TimeMachine? Could you even use the backups?

I'm trying to access some files that are available through CVS in my boss' computer.
The problem I'm having is that everytime I try the CVS command I get the same -bash: cvs: command not found response. I've also noticed that the which command does not show any response:Â
ME-MBP-2008:/ me$ which cvs
ME-MBP-2008:/ me$ Â
I've found the CVS stuff inside XCode.app folder (XCode.app/Contents/Developer/usr/bin/cvs) but the terminal still seems to not be able to find the cvs command.Â

I upgraded my 13" unibody MacBook to Snow Leopard today and immediately began experiencing the same wireless connection problems that everyone has been having (sure wish I'd Googled "wireless network problems snow leopard" before installing... but the reviews were so glowing...) I would like to downgrade to Leopard but am afraid I will lose my files as I did not clone my HD before upgrading. I have Time Machine set to backup my files whenever my external HD is connected, so I connected my HD and did a Time Machine backup before installing SL. I did not clone my HD, which I am now regretting, but I thought that Time Machine backups were safe enough. I have the Leopard disks that came with my MacBook.
What I need to know is how I can reinstall Leopard and then restore my files as they were from the Time Machine backup I made before installing SL. As I have never tried to downgrade before I am worried and am hoping for step-by-step instructions for how I would do this. I am reading that I would need to do a clean install that would erase my hard drive but am not certain that I would then be able to restore my files using the Time Machine backup I made right before installing SL. The situation is complicated by the fact that I already tried to restore from the Time Machine backup I made before I installed SL, naively thinking that this would fix everything, but of course it only restated my files as they were before the SL install without changing the system back to Leopard.
(1) Reinstall Leopard using original disks (assuming it would have to be a clean install, as in erase hard drive and install system, but if not, all the better).
(2) Hook up the external HD and then ask Time Machine to "restore" the image of my MacBook's HD from the backup made immediately before installing SL.
I would like to have my wireless back.

I have been having strange issues with my 2.13GHZ SSD Air hanging on boot disk errors and a complete restore didnt help much. Also the fans would run when doing next to nothing and the air was cool to the touch. I cant really think of anything else to try so im going to try to have it replaced with a refurb rev B. Is there any internal differences between the two besides speed etc?

I just got the new upgrade and it's caused a definite problem for me.
I use some audio connection software and while it will transfer from the mac to the external disk (an IDE drive in a proprietary format), it won't do the reverse. I believe this was an issue even with 10.5.3.
How can I go back to 10.5.2 when everything was rosy? Can I just download the 10.5.2 updater off the Appe, site and run that? Or do I basically need to back up my machine and reinstall my whole system over again?

Is it possible to delete the whole software system from my iMac (version 10.7.3, Lion), and put on everything from my MacBook (version 10.6, including all applications, like the older iTunes version etc.) on it? Not so that I'd see my MacBook on my big screen, but so that the iMac would independently run with 10.6 instead of Lion? The iMac is new and came with Lion.Nothing I work with/on on an every day basis works with Lion and I'm ready to throw the iMac out the window. Everything's fine under 10.6. I just wanted a bigger screen and more space.
I'm sure there are other threads about this when you know where to look, but I don't. I'm not very knowledgeable with computers, but I start to understand that I'm not the only one having a set of problems with Lion.

After I did the 10.7.4 update on my mid-2010 macbook pro core i7 this evening, my wifi adapter/internet is not working, it is grayed out and says "no wifi hardware found". I have re-booted my machine 4-5 times but that did not help.Apparently, if I boot into recovery partition via holding Cmd+R > there my wifi is working and is properly connected. Infact, I am writing this message through that receovery partition safari window connected to wifi just fine.Another weird nothing I noticed is if I boot into the Safari-only Guest User account, there also wifi is working just fine, no problem. However, in both of my user accounts, it is giving me this "no wifi hardware found" error and won't connect to internet. In fact, ethernet wasn't working as well in user accounts.
