OS X :: MSN Shows Me As Offline?
May 6, 2010
A lot of the times MSN shows me as offline to other people. It happens on Adium and aMSN, and sometimes IM+ on my iPod Touch. It doesn't seem to happen to my sister, I don't think. Does anyone know what could be causing this? It is quite annoying.

My MacBook Pro 13", running on latest update, is showing a completely blue, plain blue, desktop background. It changed all by itself. When I tried to reset it by right clicking on the image I want on my desktop and selecting "Set Desktop Picture" nothing changes. When I go into my settings and try to change it that way, the image I want as my background shows as already being my background, yet my desktop is still blue. Tried rebooting already.

I handle all the maintenance for three macs. My own mac Pro, my wife's Macbook Pro and my mother's iMac, all intel and purchased within the last year.
All are running OSX 10.5.8, except my mother's which is at 10.5.5. My mother lives in another state and she only has dialup.
Downloading a 60MB file takes all night when I'm there. Last update I did took me a week to download and I don't like tying my mother's phone up all night in case she needs to call an ambulance.
Is there a way I can download updates using software update and my cable modem to my Mac Pro and then burn them to DVD and install them on her machine?

This is very annoying - and it's probably MSN's fault. Everything works fine in Adium, apart from all of my MSN contacts say I'm offline when Adium clearly says "Available".
Anyone else having this problem?
My MSN address ends in "@msn.com"

A couple of days ago, I thought I'd try a 3rd party firewall to beef up security on my 2008 MBP running 10.6.2 on an ethernet connection using a router (nothing changed there).
I installed Little Snitch, tweaking its settings (don't remember what I tweaked) to customize it to my preferences as I went thru two 3-hour demo periods. Then I uninstalled it (using its own uninstall). I also tried Noob Proof to see if a free program might serve, but wasn't happy with that one, and uninstalled it using AppCleaner.
At some unknown point during this 24 hour period, I lost my internet connection, and I can't get it back.
Things I've tried:
-Ran network diagnostics several times - it says I've got a good connection, and Activity Monitor shows small amounts of data being sent and received.
-Turned Mac's firewall off & back on a few different times. Can't get online even when the firewall is off.
-Turned on the guest account and logging into it. Can't get online thru the guest account either.
-Re-installed Snow Leopard just in case it might re-set whatever is wrong.
-Looked at LOTS of logs (including Little Snitch's log) to see if I could find the source of the trouble, but while no dummy, I'm also not an expert at reading logs.
-I've also tried connecting to Software Update for a direct connection, thinking maybe it was a browser issue, but can't get connected to anything, anywhere, anyhow.
Any ideas?

I can't print anymore on my Canon i850 printer. It worked flawless previously. Now it keeps saying 'printer is offline'. The printer is connected through USB. I connected the printer to my old PC. Initially there it also says 'printer is offline' but after a few seconds the printer starts working. So the printer works on my PC, but not on my Apple. So why won't it work on my iMac anymore? I have a feeling it could have something to do with recent software-updates I installed, but I'm not sure.

I thought replacing the old brother printer with a new hp laserjet would fix the problem with the printers going offline everyday. It still does the same thing, they will print fine until the imac goes to sleep and when we try to print again we either have to power down a printer or restart the computer. Sometimes just pausing the printer and resuming will work too, or maybe pulling the usb cable and plugging it back in. We have a 24" intel core i3 with 10.6.8 version 3.06 Ghz and 4GB memory. The printers are and HP laserjet 1536dnf as default printer and an Epson Stylus NX115 for the occasional color print and a Primera Bravo se disc publisher for printing on cd discs.

My iCal icon is driving me mad, jumping up and down telling me that The request for account “btinternet.com” failed.
The server responded with “502” to operation CalDAVAccountRefreshQueueableOperation
I click 'go online' and it stops jumping for about 30 seconds and then starts up again.

I have about 3-4 years worth of emails stored locally on my mac, every year or so, in the Mail App, I drag my emails from my inbox, and into a local folder I made in the Mail app. Today I run mail, and the local folders are gone, why would it just disappear like that?
How can I retrieve it?

How can I save web pages I visit so I can view them when I'm not online? For example, right now i'm writing an essay for school and have like 10 web pages saved on my Google Notebooks. Obviously this isn't an issue when I'm connected to the internet as I can simply just go to my notebook and link to the sites again. But there are times, like yesterday when I had a few hours to kill, no where near any internet but had my macbook with me in my car and could've typed away. But needed the info on the web pages. How can I save/cache those sites so I can open them up when I'm not connected to the internet? If it matters I use Firefox mainly/online. BTW, I realized it takes like 80% less time for me to complete an essay if i'm using my macbook than a PC from my university.

I was setting up the mail app on Leopard to work with Gmail, but the app won't go online.
I think the problem was that I left a box unticked during the ADD ACCOUNT.
Is there any way I can go back and fix it?

I am new to the forum, I apologize if I am posting in the wrong spot! I am also new to mac.
Just bought a 17" macbook pro & am trying to get my HP C6280 to work on the mac. The printer is connected to our wireless router. The mac sees the printer, but says it is offline. I tried (after googling online) connecting it thru the usb to the macbook & updating the drivers, then I could "open print que" but not sure what I was supposed to do there. It will work if it is connected thru the usb, but not just wirelessly.I thought maybe of "uninstalling" it & starting over, but I do not how to uninstall it.

Most of my user base uses Windows but we do have a few Mac Users thrown in and not many techs that are proficient with Macs.
I have a customer with Mac OS 10.5.6, Mac Mail 3.5 (930.3) on an IMAC 9,1 (?).
He uses our pop email and also as a .mac mail account. For about the past week, both email accounts have been going into Work Offline status on their own. He has tried forcing in Take accounts online, and while the status does show online, he is not able to send or receive mail from either account, and it throws him back into offline mode. He is able to access the internet via Safari and he can access his email (through us) from the web and on his iphone. Eventually, the mail program will go back to online, on its own and he is able to send and receive mail like normal.
I have scoured the forums and seen a few people having the same issue and got it fixed, but none of them said how they fixed it. Any help that you can give would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if there is any additional information that I can provide.

I don't understand that function in MAIL about Take Online and Take Offline. Just what is this thing for? In Online Status in the Mailbox menu, it shows my mailboxes and their status. Is this a way of NOT checing mail for certain boxes? If they are all set to Go Online then I assume all mailboxes get check when pressing command/shift/N, correct?
Is there a reason some of them would go offline on their own?

I have an older desktop Mac that I have Garageband on, amongst other software. It doesn't have any network access (no network plug nearby, no wifi hardware).I was thinking of updating Garageband so I can upload songs from my iphone version of Garageband to this offline Mac.Can I purchase the necessary upgrade from the Mac App Store via an online Mac, then transfer it to my offline Mac?And if so, can I install the upgrade without needing a network connection for verification or whatever?

Mail has worked flawlessly for four years. Over the past several days, mail has continually gone off line when I am connected at home. My network is working fine (I am online and can receive and send info from skype/webpages, etc.) and when I connect through webmail I can send and receive messages. I have four mail accounts configured through the Mail, each is imap configured to a separate Gmail account. Each account shows the ! error which reads "The server error encountered was: The connection to the server imap.gmail.com on port 993 timed out." I can take my laptop to any other network and all the accounts go online and are completely fine for the entire session. Then when I return home they go offline again. I have tried to eliminate my wireless network from the equation by direct connecting to the cable modem, but the issue remains.

I use Mail, and have two accounts - one is POP and one IMAP. The one I use most is a gmail IMAP account. I've been sending and receiving e-mails all day, but suddenly both accounts are offline. Mail asks me repeatedly for the password, but when I put it in it doesn't accept it. I went online to gmail and find that the sign on and password still work and can see my mail there, but I want to get it in my computer.

I recently transferred all my data from a MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Air. I have an old Groupwise mailbox on my Pro which has been offline for over a year since my company switched from Groupwise to Outlook. After the Groupwise acct went offline the option to delete the mailbox has been greyed out. I'm trying to get this old mailbox off my Air now, after it transferred with everything else. How can I delete this old account?

Until recently, I had had no problems with the mail application for going on six years. Now, everytime my mail application checks for mail (auto or manual), all of my mailboxes are kicked offline and must manually be put back on line. In addition, when I try to send mail, the mail goes to my out box and I have to restart my computer in order for it to be eventually sent. These problems started when Verizon transferred its internet services to Frontier. Frontier says it is an Apple problem. (In doing some research I find that other mac owners, Panther and beyond, with other ISP's are having similar problems with no one, that I can find having found a solution). I have double checked my settings and deleted and reentered all of my mailboxes to no avail.

Just got my first Mac on friday, I'm loving finding out how to do everything, but one thing has become extremely frustrating. I can't send my email! I have no trouble receiving it, and I've read everything I can get my hands on and all my settings seem to be correct. I've tried port 25, port 587, tried using smtp.mac, mail.mac, (my ISP) tried with SSL and without, everything I could change I've changed. My username and password and all account information must be correct since I'm able to receive mail, it's just the sending that's the problem. I'm using a dot mac email account if that makes any difference.
One thing that concerns me is that under mail preferences, accounts, and account information, next to "outgoing mail server (SMTP)" it says "(offline)" next to the selected server. Here is the exact message I'm getting, and no matter how I change it the message stays the same. "Cannot send message using the server (null). This message could not be delivered because your SMTP settings are not set. please use the account preferences panel to set the SMTP options for your account. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click try later to leave the message in your outbox until it can be delivered."

I'm the Network Admin for my company and our Marketing Director just got a new MB Pro. I've used directory services and he can sign in and authenticate with his Windows AD credentials with no issue as well as access all resources. Problem is he travels a lot and needs to be able to login off of our internal network. Windows will cache login creds for offline logins. Is there a way to allow this in OS X also?
