View 5 RepliesFor security reasons I would like to have as few open TCP ports as possible on my iMac, leaving open only those that I feel are worthwhile having enabled. How can I go about to
a) identify which TCP ports are currently open on the system
b) identify the processes that have opened the ports and understand the origin and purpose of those process
c) disable the processes that have ports open, if I feel that there is no good reason for having them open
I'm running OS X 10.9.4.

I am making folders for each lecture I have, the names of the folders are the dates of the lectures. Then each folder will have two empty word documents with the date as the name as well, one for the lecture and one for tutorial.
I would like to have it in order and stay that way, right now its all over the place, I've tried organizing by name, and last date modified and no luck.
To more easily deal with the increasing number of regular document files I have, I'm wondering if the standard 'Finder', or any other software that is available, can be set up to load the most frequently used, say top 50, files into a folder where it would automatically update. This would preferably be an icon in the dock, if not a main folder in Finder.
I know the system can order folders and files according to 'last modified', but that still leaves me to search all folders. One way to do it, I guess, would be to destroy all folders then it may order them as I want, but it seems a bit drastic. To find older files, I guess I would just have to rely on 'spotlight' or search.
Is there a way to list every file on the computer by size? I'm trying to see what's taking up so much space. I have a 15" unibody mbp with a 320 gb hd and I only have like 30 gb left ... i use fcp and tried cleaning out all the capture scratch folders i don't need . but i want to list it all if possible.

I have - as you may have guessed - gmail - I have always had this issue, which until three months ago, thought was just one of those things I would just have to accept and live with.
However, three months ago I started my new job, we also use gmail as email provider (though our emails don't end with @gmail.com but @corporatename.com) I have these two email accounts setup exactly the same way in both mail apps, but the mail app in my work laptop lists emails I have sent from browsers and smart phone (my work mobile is not an iphone) but the mail app on my private laptop doesn't. How can this be, and how do I make mail app at home do as my work app mail does

I absolutely hate that Steve Jobs insists on mixing directories with bookmarks in Safari and directories with files in Finder. While I've found a solution for the Finder, that is, Path Finder, I'm still struggling to find a plugin for Safari which cleans up this mess and lists directories first.

im looking for a more elegant way to list of folders in a popup for users to select at the beginning of my script and use as a path variable.the path i need to filter through to make the list is similar to the following: /Volumes/Network Drive/A/Client Name(s) starting with A//Volumes/Network Drive/B/Client Name(s) starting with B/ other folders will be created in the folder they select. The complications: All the folders i want to list are divided into folders labelled with each letter of the alphabet.Also there could potentially be hundreds of these folders once consolidated to a list The current script lists the entire file path in the popup. I want the entire path to be set as the variable but just the folder name to be listed in the popup These are the scrips i have started with but would love a better way to combine and clean up.

Is there a way to show the company names in "name" column? Address Book (or Contact in iPod Touch) only gives me an option to sort out by the first name or the last name. I prefer sorting out by the company name.

So I am trying to open up my bootcamp partition (running windows 7) in VMWare and I get this error message: Cannot open the disk '/Users/brandonquirarte/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0/Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm/Boot Camp partition.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. It was working just fine before the upgrade to Snow Leopard but I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. I had to reinstall Windows 7 after I tried installing the Bootcamp 3.0 drivers so that may be more of the issue. I didn't test to see if would work still when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased The 99 Darkest Pieces of Classical Music from Amazon. Yeah, it's sucky MP3, but it was free and I'm not a big classical music buff. I have the Album Artist field empty, and every track marked as "Part of a Compilation". So far so good. When I go to change the Artist field of any track, to fix a misspelling or capitalization error, for example, that track is instantly dragged out of the track listing for 99 Darkest and into its own album, with the album name being Unknown Album. This despite the track still being marked as Part of a Compilation. If I restore the original spelling, the track is dragged back into 99 Darkest's list. It's not like iTunes to maintain state like that. What's happening and how do I fix it?

I want to list the files (Canon images, file names of the form img_xxxx) stored on an external drive (named WINBACK), a partition on a USB HDD. What I did:
1. Clicked on drive WINBACK in Finder.
2. Typed img in spotlight search box - Finder window changed to the full spotlight window. Window shows <Search: 'This Mac' "WINBACK">
3. Changed 'Contents' to 'File Name' so top line of display showed < Search: 'This Mac' "WINBACK" | 'File Name' >.
4. Clicked + to give a search line.
5. On search line changed 'Kind' to 'Name', changed 'matches' to 'begins with' from the drop down lists and then typed 'img_' into the search box.
6. Clicked + to give another search line.
7. Changed 'Kind' to 'File extension', and typed 'jpg' into the search box.
8. This gave a list of files img_xxxx.jpg (obviously 0 < xxxx < 10,000).
As there appeared to be some duplicates I checked the paths of the files. Some were from "WINBACK" but most were from various locations on the internal drive.
I updated my circa 2013 Macbook Air 13" to OSX Mavericks and a strange issue has started. Every time I open Finder it takes literal minutes to load the file listing, and while it loads it freezes the section where the file listing loads with whatever background it was opened over. This happens all the time, and once it finally loads, it will do the same thing if I try to go to a different folder. This renders Finder essentially useless and I have had to add a third party (forklift) app to browse and manage files.

I have 4 drives on my mac pro and tons of folders, some with sub folders. I need a searchable listing of all folders and sub folders to consolidate, re-organize, etc. I don't mind buying a utility but would like something that can do all of the above and either let me search and organize the list or let me dump it into Excel.

I've had my macbook pro for about 2 months, after 4 years on a pc (and 4 years on an imac before that). I love my MBP, but one major gripe I do have is that when I have a lot of windows, especially when I have a lot of word documents open, they can be hidden behind the current window I have open, but not show up on the dock (only show up on dock if they are minimized). On windows, this wasn't a problem. So, is it possible to make it easier to switch between windows that aren't minimized? make those windows show up on the dock? I know about expose, and I use it a lot (especially the application and all windows features). I know about spaces too, but I still would like something more like I described above.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a user that seems to have a broken X11 in Tiger. She is unable to open multiple xterm windows by pressing the key combination or selecting from the menu. When she closes the window, she cannot open another without closing the program and reopening. I've tried creating a .xinitrc with the path to /usr/X11R6/bin, but that then wouldn't even open any windows.

I know this is a Windows type thing, but it's something I like when I Bootcamp into XP. I switch between windows a lot, and it's nice how on XP in the taskbar at the bottom all the windows are displayed. I know I can do CMD + Tab, I know I can do the display all windows, but it's just a lot easier this way. I sit back in my chair a lot while browsing the internets and its easier if I can do it with my mouse. I was wondering if the active windows can be displayed in the upper menu bar, not the Dock, because mine autohides and it would be easier in the menu.
