OS X :: How To Customize The Folder Listing In The Finder

Sep 20, 2010

organize folders in finder in a custom order?

I am making folders for each lecture I have, the names of the folders are the dates of the lectures. Then each folder will have two empty word documents with the date as the name as well, one for the lecture and one for tutorial.

I would like to have it in order and stay that way, right now its all over the place, I've tried organizing by name, and last date modified and no luck.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Finder/spotlight - Listing Files On External Drive?

May 14, 2012

I want to list the files (Canon images, file names of the form img_xxxx) stored on an external drive (named WINBACK), a partition on a USB HDD. What I did:

1. Clicked on drive WINBACK in Finder.

2. Typed img in spotlight search box - Finder window changed to the full spotlight window. Window shows  <Search: 'This Mac'  "WINBACK">

3. Changed 'Contents' to 'File Name' so top line of display showed < Search: 'This Mac'  "WINBACK"  | 'File Name' >.

4. Clicked + to give a search line.

5. On search line changed 'Kind' to 'Name', changed  'matches' to 'begins with' from the drop down lists and then typed 'img_' into the search box.

6. Clicked + to give another search line.

7. Changed 'Kind' to 'File extension', and typed 'jpg' into the search box.

8. This gave a list of files img_xxxx.jpg (obviously 0 < xxxx < 10,000).

As there appeared to be some duplicates I checked the paths of the files. Some were from "WINBACK" but most were from various locations on the internal drive.

MacBook Air :: How To Customize Files View In Finder

Mar 17, 2012

I realize I can click on the icons in the upper left corner to change from cover flow to list view etc., but when you do that it becomes the default view no matter what folder you open. I am a recent windows convert and in windows you can have list view for one folder and thumbnail view in another and it remembers. The problem I have with a single default view is that if I change to cover flow to view photos and then open a folder that is just a list of documents I hav to switch back each time I go form one to the other. I also get an error message telling me you cant view documents this way. Is there some way to set a different default view for each folder?

OS X Mavericks :: Finder Takes Literal Minutes To Load File Listing When Opened

Jun 30, 2014

I updated my circa 2013 Macbook Air 13" to OSX Mavericks and a strange issue has started. Every time I open Finder it takes literal minutes to load the file listing, and while it loads it freezes the section where the file listing loads with whatever background it was opened over. This happens all the time, and once it finally loads, it will do the same thing if I try to go to a different folder. This renders Finder essentially useless and I have had to add a third party (forklift) app to browse and manage files.

OS X :: Global Folder Settings In Finder

Jun 15, 2010

I've been customizing my folders using the View Options window in each folder separately, and I was wondering if there was an application or script that would change my view options (font sizes, icon size and spacing, background image, etc) for ALL folders, on a system-wide level.

I know there has to be a way to do it, but every time I try, I only change settings for the parent folder. Sorta 2 part question, I guess... How do I change the text underneath "Macintosh HD" such as "500GB, 457GB free." I know it's a string that can be changed, but I've forgotten where it's located.

OS X :: New Folder From Selected Items In Finder - Exist?

Dec 1, 2008

I frequently want to grab a ton of junk on say my desktop and sort them into folders. Process is "make new folder, select all the items I want to go in it, drag them to it, name folder, move folder to where I want". What I want it to be able to do is select all those items and have a contextual menu command "Make New folder from selected". Ideally, popping up an Open/Save dialog letting me choose where to put the new folder and allowing me to name it. On closing dialog, I have my new renamed folder with all my selected stuff in it, wherever I want on my HD with no extra dragging and clicking. Does this sound worthwhile to anyone else? Am I missing some way that this can be done? Seemed like an obvious thing to me, was kind of puzzled to discover (AFAIK) no way to do it.
